The researchers fund that animals began using the bridges within 30 days f their setting-up. Five hundred crssings have been recrded ver an 11-mnth perid.
Abra and her team gt help frm the native Waimiri-Atrari peple. Their territry, which extends ver 2.3 millin hectares, is ne f the mst well-prtected regins in the Amazn. It is als cut thrugh by the BR-174.
It has been a lng and difficult struggle, but nw mre than 150 Waimiri-Atrari peple have helped cnstruct and set up the bridges alng arund 77 miles f the highway. Of the eight primate species that live in the area, five are in danger f extinctin due t lss f habitat, separatin, and rad accidents.
