Rubenstein said such behaviur was prbably necessary fr starlings as they live in a harsh envirnment where drught is cmmn and fd is limited. “Tw birds prbably can't feed their yung n their wn, s they need these helpers t help them,” he said, adding that as each breeding 繁9 3 pair prduces their yung, birds must be emplyed frm utside the family grup t help the yung survive.
Writing in the jurnal Nature, Rubenstein and clleagues reprt hw they studied superb starlings at 410 nests in Kenya cvering nine scial grups, recrding data ver a 20-year perid frm 2002 that cvered mre than 40breeding seasns. The team als cllected DNA frm 1,175 birds t explre their relatinships t each ther.
The results reveal that rather than helping birds at randm, starlings preferentially helped breeding birds that were related t them, particularly if they were brn in the same nest. Hwever, they als helped unrelated breeding birds, even when there were pprtunities t help relatives.
