DeepSeek is reprtedly as pwerful as ChatGPT in tasks including mathematics and cding. Like ChatGPT, it is a “reasning” mdel. These mdels prduce respnses, simulating (模拟) hw humans reasn thrugh prblems r ideas.
DeepSeek says it has been able t d this cheaply — researchers behind it claim it cst $6 millin t train, a small part f the “ver $100 millin” mentined by OpenAI bss Sam Altman when discussing ChatGPT. It can als minimize the impact f US restrictins n the mst pwerful chips reaching China.
The funder f DeepSeek reprtedly built up a stre f Nvidia A100 chips, which have been banned frm exprt t China since September 2022. sme experts believe he paired these chips with cheaper, less cmplex nes — ending up with a much mre efficient prcess.
DeepSeek als uses less memry than its ppnents, eventually reducing the cst t perfrm tasks fr users. That cmbinatin f perfrmance and lwer cst helped DeepSeek’s AI assistant becme the mst-dwnladed free app n Apple’s App Stre when it was released in the US.

Fr years, health-aware cnsumers have chsen brwn rice, believing its cmplete bran (麸皮) layer makes it a superir chice. But a new study frm Michigan State University reveals an unsettling truth — this “healthier” alternative cntains nearly 40% mre pisnus arsenic (砷), a knwn substance linked t bladder, lung, and skin cancers, than prcessed white rice.
“Rice bran and brwn rice are shwn t have a higher arsenic cntent than the grain endsperm (胚乳) r white rice,” the study warns. Rice absrbs arsenic frm sil mre efficiently than nearly any ther crp. Once inside the plant, arsenic stays in the bran layer — the very cmpnent remved when turning brwn rice int white.
The findings expse a critical cntradictin in mdern nutritin: a fd praised fr its health benefits might actually pse real risks, particularly t weak grups like babies. Is the push fr “natural” and “whle” fds unintentinally harming the yungest cnsumers?
The researchers analyzed rice cnsumptin acrss age grups and fund that children aged 6-24 mnths wh regularly eat brwn rice may g beynd safe arsenic intake limits by nearly 40%. The daily amunt fr sme babies reached 0.295 micrgrams per kilgram f bdy weight. While adults face a very small risk frm ccasinal brwn rice cnsumptin, the study warns that heavy rice eaters — especially thse n gluten-free (无麸质的) diets r with pr nutritin — culd als build up dangerus amunts ver time.
The study fund that bran alne cntains arsenic at levels 10 times higher than white rice itself. This is a wrrying thing fr prducts like brwn rice syrup (糖浆) , which has already been linked t 30 times mre arsenic in sme baby fd. Culd parents unknwingly be pisning their children while trying t feed them “healthier” ptins?
With munting evidence that fds marketed as “whlesme” may carry hidden pisnus substances, will law makers finally demand clearer labeling — r will parents remain in the dark?
      12. Why d health-aware cnsumers chse brwn rice?
      A. Because it has a lwer arsenic cntent.B. Because they believe its bran layer is beneficial.
      C. Because it tastes better than white rice.D. Because it is prcessed mre carefully.
      13. What can we learn frm paragraph 3?
      A. Mdern nutritin is cmpletely wrng.
      B. “Natural” and “whle” fds are always healthy.
      C. Sme seemingly healthy fds may be risky.
      D. Babies and yung children shuld nly eat white rice.
      14. What is the writer’s attitude twards “clearer labeling”?
      A. Uncertain.B. Objective.C. Negative.D. Apprving.
      15. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. A cmparisn between brwn rice and white rice.
      B. The imprtance f fd safety fr children.
      C. A new study abut the arsenic cntent in brwn rice and its impacts.
      D. The selectin f apprpriate rice fr different age grups.
