Julia tried t remain calm and asked us t g dwn the stairs. When I walked past the rftp pl, I saw water rushing ut f it, which terrified me even mre. I skipped dwn the 37 flights f stairs as if I were taking part in the Olympics.
Hwever, as I was trying t get t the grund flr, I fund it strange that nbdy else was escaping. Eventually I made it t the grund flr. Again, I had never been in an earthquake befre, s I had n sense f what it was like during an earthquake. I was kind f expecting disrder n the streets, a thusand peple in the hall, and a general Armageddn style setting.
Sure enugh I hurriedly gt thrugh the drs n the first flr and went straight t the receptin desk, thinking the girl at the desk knew what was ging n. If yu want t take gd care f yur eyes and visin, I encurage yu t adpt the habit f blinking (眨眼) sftly as ften as pssible. Frequent and gentle blinking is imprtant t maintain healthy eyes and gd visin because it helps t keep yur eyes cated with three beneficial layers (层) f tears.
The first layer f tears lies right up against the whites f yur eyes, and prvides an even cat f prtein-rich misture (水分) fr the secnd layer t stick t. The middle watery layer helps t wash away freign dust. It als prvides yur eyes with minerals, a variety f prteins, and misture. The third uter layer f tears is smewhat ily. It serves t prevent the middle watery layer frm drying quickly, and smths yur eyes.
If yur eyes are nt regularly cated with the three layers f tears described abve, they will be shrt f misture and cleaning, and they will be unnecessarily tired.
One f the reasns why many f us dn’t blink as ften as we shuld is that we dn’t see frequent blinking in mainstream media. Actrs and news presenters are typically trained t blink as infrequently as pssible, s when we take in mst frms f media, ur minds learn that it isn’t nrmal t blink frequently.
T fully supprt yur eyes and visin, it’s best t blink sftly every tw t fur secnds, which translates t abut fifteen t thirty blinks per minute. By making an effrt t sftly blink at this rate, ver time, yur bdy will turn yur effrts int a habit. If yu’re thinking that such frequent blinking will make reading a bk r viewing a mvie uncmfrtable, give it a try and yu’ll see right away that it desn’t take away frm these experiences at all.
28.What des the authr suggest in the text?
A.Taking gd care f ur eyes by eye exercises.
B.Clsing and pening ur eyes frequently and gently.
C.Maintaining healthy eyes t prevent nearsightedness.
D.Crying as ften as pssible t gain three layers f tears.
29.What is the secnd paragraph mainly abut?
A.The classificatin f tears.
B.The causes f three layers f tears.
C.The functins f three layers f tears.
D.The imprtance f the first layer f tears.
30.Hw des the authr think f blinking frequently when reading?
A.Annying.B.Disagreeable.C.Stupid.D.Harmless.
31.What is the best title fr the text?
A.Keep Eyes Cated with as Many Layers f Tears as Pssible
B.Try Frequent Blinking fr Healthier Eyes and Better Visin
C.Actrs and News Presenters Set Us a Bad Example in Lifestyle
D.Blinking Lwers the Experiences When Reading r Seeing a Film
Recently, a case f lifebat ethics ccurred. On Aug. 4, Graham and Sheryl Anley, while bating ff the cast f Suth Africa, hit a rck. As the bat threatened t sink, the husband gt ff, but his wife was trapped in the bat. Instead f freeing his wife and getting her t shre, Graham grabbed Rsie, their pet dg. With Rsie safe and sund, Graham returned fr Sheryl. All are ding fine.
It’s great stry, but it desn’t strike me as especially newswrthy. News is suppsed t be abut smething fairly unique, and recent research suggests that, in the right circumstances, lts f peple als wuld have grabbed their Rsie first.
We have strange relatinships with ur pets. We lk after ur pets with great lve and better health care than billins f peple receive. We speak t pets with the same high-pitched vices that we use fr babies. As an extreme example f ur feelings abut pets, the Nazis had strict laws that guaranteed the kind treatment f the pets f Jews being shipped t death camps.
A recent paper by Gerge Regents University demnstrates this human invlvement with pets t an astnishing extent. Participants in the study were tld a situatin in which a bus is ut cntrl, bearing dwn n a dg and a human. Which d yu save? With respnses frm mre than 500 peple, the answer was that it depended: What kind f human and what kind f dg?
Everyne wuld save a brther, grandparent r clse friend rather than a strange dg. But when peple cnsidered their wn dg VS peple less cnnected with them -- a distant cusin r a hmetwn stranger -- vtes a favr f saving the dg came rlling in. And an astnishing 40% f respndents, including 46% f wmen, vted t save their dg ver a freign turist.
What des a finding like this mean? First, it is that yur dds aren’t s gd if yu find yurself in anther cuntry with a bus bearing dwn n yu and a cute dg. But it als pints t smething deeper: ur unprecedented attitude tward animals, which gt its start with the birth f kind - hearted scieties in the 19th century.
We prisn peple wh abuse animals, put urselves in harm’s way in bats between whales an whalers and shw sympathy t Bambi and his mther. We can extend sympathy t an animal and feel its pain like n ther species. But let’s nt be t prud f urselves. As this study and t much f ur histry shw, we’re pretty selective abut hw we extend ur kindness t ther human beings.
32.Which f the fllwing is true accrding t the article?
A.The stry f the Anleys and their dg was t unique t be newswrthy.
B.Mst peple surveyed chse t save their wn dg rather than a human.
C.It wa in the 19th century that human beings started t lve their pets.
D.Human beings are mre and mre cncerned with animals nwadays.
33.What is the functin f the first f paragraph?
A.T create a relaxing md fr readers.
B.T present the theme f this essay straightly.
C.T lead in the main tpic f this essay.
D.T raise prblems that will be slved later.
34.The authr mentins Nazi laws in the third paragraph ________.
A.t shw hw cruel the Nazis’ were t the Jews
B.as an example t persuade peple nt t lve pets
C.t illustrate the strange relatinship between human and pets
D.as an example t display the kindness f the Nazis
35.What des the authr mainly argue fr?
A.Pets are f great significance t us human beings.
B.We shuld rethink abut ut attitude twards animals and mankind.
C.It is kind f human beings t extend kindness t animals.
D.We shuld be selective when shwing attitude tward ther human beings.
