Hustn was quite a change frm Suthern Califrnia, where I grew up. I had bravely faced my husband’s jb transfer, but withut my ld rutines f PTA meetings and my kids’ schl events, I wndered what my days wuld lk like.
The answer arrived when Annie, a runner in the neighbrhd, phned and invited me t jin USA Fit. I was hping she wuld hear the disinterest in my vice, but Annie didn’t give up easily. That day her plan succeeded in winning my final yes. Then, we were divided int grups accrding t marathn r half- marathn, and pace. I had a grup and friends!
Frm day ne, fur experienced wmen, Diane, Karen, Jill, and Betsy, never left my side. By fall, I came t believe I culd walk the half-marathn at the required rapid pace. My cnfidence grew frm strict preparatin and ur curage. But when nly ne week remained, panic struck. Deep insecurity surfaced—was I truly up t the challenge? Yet tgether, we encuraged each ther and persevered(坚持).
My gal had simply been t finish the half-marathn. At sme crazy pint, I decided t cmplete the race in less than three hurs. The last mile was nearly intlerable. Our pace had been much quicker than during training. Luckily, the final stretch was bursting with enthusiasm frm the crwded sidewalks.
Six mnths f preparatin finished with ne step ver a thin black line. Passinate vlunteers placed medals arund ur necks. I felt the shiny ribbn with an verwhelming sense f accmplishment. At that mment, I realized I had becme part f my new cmmunity.

The human mind is deeply influenced by the cllective (集体的). This phenmenn, termed herd mentality, describes the tendency f individuals t adpt the behavirs, beliefs, and attitudes f the grups t which they belng. It shapes ur thughts and decisins, ften withut cnscius awareness. Frm scial media trends t cnsumer behavir patterns, herd mentality affects hw we think and act. But are we truly independent thinkers, r are we simply fllwing the crwd?
Herd mentality has evlutinary rts. Fr early humans, survival depended n grup chesin (凝聚力).
Thse wh stayed with the tribe enjyed prtectin and access t resurces, while lners faced threats alne. Over generatins, this adaptive behavir became a natural part f life. Tday, althugh the physical dangers f being alne have decreased, the psychlgical pull f the grup remains pwerful.
Human beings are naturally scial creatures, driven by a fundamental need fr acceptance and a sense f belnging. Our identities are ften tied t the grups we belng t, and the fear f rejectin drives us t cnfrm, even at the cst f ur persnal beliefs. This grup pressure is strengthened by cgnitive biases (认知偏见) that twist judgment. The herd mentality leads individuals t trust the majrity pinin withut critically evaluating it, while repeated expsure t the same infrmatin can make it seem mre believable. Scial media intensifies these biases by prmting ppular cntent ver truth, creating ech chambers that supprt existing beliefs rather than challenge them.
In certain circumstances, herd mentality can have psitive effects, particularly in situatins where individuals have limited infrmatin r expertise. Fllwing the majrity can lead t better utcmes, as the cllective knwledge f the grup surpasses that f any single persn. Hwever, excessive herd mentality pses risks, including suppressing independent thught, harming creativity, and facilitating the spread f misinfrmatin. Therefre, develping critical thinking — questining assumptins, evaluating surces, and explring diverse perspectives — is essential fr bth persnal independence and cllective prgress.
28.Which behavir best demnstrates herd mentality?
A.Supprting grup pinins t fit in with thers.
B.Imprving a slutin with individual creativity.
C.Selecting a career based n family expectatins.
D.Accepting expert advice in cmplicated situatins.
29.Why did early humans develp herd mentality?
A.T enhance their scial status.
B.T meet their emtinal needs.
C.T strengthen their hunting skills.
D.T increase their chances f survival.
30.What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A.The link between grup pressure and self-identity.
B.The effect f herd mentality n human minds.
C.The factrs cntributing t herd mentality.
D.The rle f scial media in shaping persnal beliefs.
31.Which statement will the authr prbably agree with?
A.Herd mentality is inevitable in highly cnnected scieties.
B.It is imprtant t maintain critical thinking in a trend-fllwing sciety.
C.Misinfrmatin can lead individuals t rely n cllective pinins.
D.True independence is achieved by rejecting diverse perspectives.

Frget t bring yur charger? What if yur clthing culd generate electricity frm the heat yur bdy naturally prduces? This futuristic cncept is becming a reality.
Scientists at Chalmers University and Linköping University in Sweden have develped a new yarn (纱线) that can generate electricity frm bdy heat, using a plymer cating (聚合物涂层) applied t rdinary silk yarn. The principle is the thermelectric effect (热电效应), where temperature differences between the human bdy and its surrunding envirnment create electrical energy. As the human bdy prduces cnstant heat, the warmer side f the thermelectric material transfers electrns t the clder side, generating an electrical current.
"The plymers that we use are bendable, lightweight and easy t use in bth liquid and slid frm. They are als harmless," says study first authr Mariavittria Craigher. Unlike previus attempts at creating thermelectric textiles, this breakthrugh slves a lng-standing prblem: the lack f air-stable plymers.
"The new type f plymer has utstanding perfrmance stability in cntact with air while at the same time having a very gd ability t cnduct electricity. By using plymers, we dn't need any rare earth metals, which are cmmn in electrnics," explains Craigher.
The new thermelectric yarn culd pwer sensrs in clthing t mnitr vital signs like heart rate and bdy temperature withut needing battery changes r recharging. Beynd healthcare, it culd enable lwpwer functins in smart clthing, such as envirnmental sensing and lcatin tracking. As pwer cnversin efficiency imprves, mre pwer-demanding features can be supprted.
While the new plymers mark a majr step frward in thermelectric textiles, it's imprtant t nte that the temperature differences in lab tests are much higher than thse typically experienced in everyday clthing. As a result, real-wrld perfrmance may be lwer. Mrever, the yarn generates nly 0.67 micrwatts at a 70-degree temperature difference, which is far t little t charge devices like smartphnes. The manufacturing prcess is als time-cnsuming, requiring fur days f manual wrk t create ne piece, making it impractical fr large-scale cmmercial prductin.
32.Hw des the new apprach generate electricity?
A.By recycling the flw f air.
B.By absrbing the energy f sunlight.
C.By heating the surrunding envirnment.
D.By making use f temperature differences.
33. What advantage d the new plymers have ver previus materials?
A.Lwer csts. B.Greater safety. C.Higher stability. D.Less weight.
34.What can we learn abut the new yarn frm paragraph 4?
A.It needs t be charged regularly.
B.It has brad applicatin prspects.
C.It is designed fr medical treatment.
D.It will be launched int the market sn.
35.What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A.The limitatins f putting the plymers int practical use.
B.The standard f prducing the new textile.
C.The ptential f the plymers in pwering devices.
D.The fllw-up test plan f scientists.
