My fingers trembled as I signed the pre-medical applicatin frm. The waterclr brushes n my desk stared back at me like abandned friends. I’m Lra, an 18-year-ld wh secretly drew brain diagrams n napkins while classmates drew cartns. “Art feeds the sul but starves the bdy,” Mm always said. Her wrds haunted me as my bilgy textbks slwly buried my drawing pads.
Then came the schl career fair that changed everything. Dr. Eleanr Whitman frm Harvard asked us t list ur “hidden skills”. My hand shk as I wrte “bserving details”—smething I’d learned frm painting flwer petals. “That’s medical research’s mst needed skill!” she exclaimed, sharing hw a student turned micrbilgy ntes int textbk illustratins. My lab partner whispered, “Remember ur phtsynthesis (光合作用) cmic?” Fr the first time, my tw wrlds didn’t feel s separate.
The real surprise came during hspital vlunteering. Watching surgeries, I nticed smething—the steady hands f dctrs reminded me f my brushwrk. When a by struggled t describe his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragn n his cast. “Yu made medicine speak,” the nurse said. Slwly, my drawing pads filled with cells that lked like clred-glass art and X-rays arranged like abstract paintings.
Mr. Dawsn, ur career cunselr, helped cnnect these dts. On his whitebard, my medical knwledge and art skills verlapped in a bright yellw circle labeled “Medical Illustratin”. He shwed me jb listings I never knew existed—graphic designers fr science apps, 3D mdelers fr anatmy (解剖) classes. “Yur ‘impractical’ skill makes yu stand ut,” he said, pinting t my dragn drawing nw used in pain management wrkshps.
Tday, my micrscpe and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that nce hesitated between them nw create 3D mdels f viruses fr vaccine educatin. Smetimes I teach yung patients t draw their feelings instead f describing them. My stry isn’t abut heart and reality canceling each ther ut—they just multiply pssibilities.

Nland Arbaug was paralyzed belw the shulders after a diving accident, lsing physical mvement in his limbs. In January 2024, eight years pst-injury, he became the first recipient f a brain implant (植入) frm Neuralink, a US neurtechnlgy firm funded by Eln Musk. This brain-cmputer interface (BCI), which has gne thrugh medical research sessin, translates thughts int cmputer cmmands, enabling Nland t cntrl a cmputer with his mind, thugh it wn’t imprve the cgnitive abilities.
BCI detects electrical signals which are generated when humans think abut mving and transfrm these signals int digital cmmands, such as mving a muse n a screen. Neuralink’s invlvement has brught this decades-ld technlgy int the sptlight, arusing public interest as well as dubt ver the invasive (侵入) prcedure’s safety. Experts hail Nland’s implant as a significant milestne, thugh they nte that a full assessment wuld take time, given Musk’s publicity influence.
Thanks t BCI, Nland culd cntrl a muse by thinking abut bending his fingers, allwing him t perfrm tasks like playing chess with thers. Hwever, he encuntered sme technical issues. Fr instance, he faced a temprary discnnectin that caused him t lse cntrl f his cmputer. Despite ptential benefits, cncerns ver affrdability and implantatin surgery failure remain. Anil Seth, a neurscientist frm Sussex University, pints ut that exprting brain activity can expse persnal thughts, beliefs, and feelings t thers. Frtunately, engineers have managed t enhance the cnnectin and secure the database.
Neuralink isn’t alne in this field. Synchrn’s prduct, a less invasive device implanted thrugh the jugular vein (颈静脉), als cnnects t the brain’s mtr regin, translating thughts int digital utputs. One user reprted that he experienced a virtual travel using the device.
Nland is uncertain what impact the device will have n him in the future. Hwever, he believes his jurney is just the start f a widespread reality. Nland remains ptimistic abut future advancements, hping t cntrl his wheelchair r even a humanid rbt. While BCI hlds huge ptential fr changing lives, especially fr thse with paralysis, they must vercme cmplex pssible challenges.

Nwadays, technlgies such as hvering drnes, rbtic weeders, and precisin fertilizatin culd revlutinize agriculture by increasing fd prductin while reducing envirnmental harm. Hwever, there still exist sme gaps in farming research. Researchers frm PhenRb at the University f Bnn have recently stated that the gaps shuld be filled.
T achieve that, the researchers frm PhenRb stress the imprtance f jint effrts and interdisciplinary (跨学科的) teamwrk wrldwide. Fr example, field-scanning drnes with high-reslutin cameras can detect plant diseases and assess plant health and prductivity. While the cllected data is grwing rapidly, t truly transfrm farming practices, it still needs t be integrated with glbal datasets n plant genetics, weather cnditins, sil types and farming methds.
Researchers als emphasize the imprtance f tracking the smart technlgies used n farms glbally. In this way, researches try t identify barriers t the adptin f technlgies and appraches t encuraging their uptake. Fr example, sme incentives such as financial assistance, tax breaks and land use discunts will help farmers vercme initial cst barriers, enabling investment in mre efficient and sustainable farming practices t prmte prductivity and prtect envirnment. Such incentives are crucial fr bsting the use f smart technlgies like autmated irrigatin systems r AI-driven crp mnitring.
Sme technlgies have already prven effective in imprving sustainability. Fr example, rbtic weeders can remve weeds withut harming surrunding crps, which reduces the need fr chemical herbicides and helps keep the sil healthy. At PhenRb, researchers are integrating data int mnitring nitrgen levels. This data is used t create mdels that determine the ideal nitrgen amunts fr different cnditins, decreasing waste and minimizing envirnmental harm. As agriculture cntributes significantly t glbal greenhuse gas emissins, researchers believe these technlgies will play a vital rle in reducing sme f the damage caused by traditinal farming practices.
      12. Hw will the gaps in farming be filled accrding t the researchers?
      A. By gathering regin-specific datasets.B. By raising eclgical plant prductivity.
      C. By applying cutting-edge camera systems.D. By prmting glbal interdisciplinary cperatin.
      13. What des the authr think f the drne-cllected agricultural data?

Peple will never knw what difference a name can make! I’ve never read an fficial study n the matter, but I’ve nticed that in animal shelters, black cats are the mst verlked. Black seems t be the least preferred f cat clrs, ranking belw all cmbinatins f white, range, gray, sptted and striped. Black cats are still steretyped (刻板印象) as Hallween cats, creatures f bad luck, mre apprpriate n a witch's brmstick than curled up n yur pillw. T make matters wrse, in cages, black cats becme clse t invisible, fading int the dark shadws in the back f a stainless-steel cage.
Fr eleven years, starting when I was ten years ld, I vlunteered at an urban animal shelter. It always struck me as particularly unfair that, time after time, I’d get t knw affectinate, adrable black cats, nly t watch them be passed ver by adpters merely because f their clr. I assumed there was nthing that culd be dne.
