Researchers at the University f Washingtn created a new web app, Self-Talk with Superher Zip, aimed t help children develp skills like self-awareness and emtinal management.
At first, sme parents were wary: In a wrld f Siri and Alexa, they are skeptical that the makers f such technlgies are putting children’s welfare first.
In Self-Talk with Superher Zip, a chatbt guided pairs f siblings thrugh lessns. The UW team fund that, after speaking with the app fr a week, mst children culd explain the cncept f supprtive self-talk and apply it in their daily lives. And kids wh’d engaged in negative self-talk befre the study were able t turn that habit psitive.
The UW team published its findings in June at the 2023 Interactin Design and Children cnference. The app is still a prttype (雏形) and is nt yet publicly available. Previus studies have shwn children can learn varius tasks and abilities frm chatbts. Yet little research explres hw chatbts can help kids effectively acquire sciemtinal skills.
“There is rm t design child-centric experiences with a chatbt that prvide fun and educatinal practice pprtunities,” said senir authr Alexis Hiniker, an assciate prfessr in the UW Infrmatin Schl. “Over the last few decades, televisin prgrams like ‘Sesame Street,’ ‘Mister Rgers,’ and ‘Daniel Tiger’s Neighbrhd’ have shwn that it is pssible fr TV t help kids cultivate sciemtinal skills. We asked: Can we make a space where kids can practice these skills in an interactive app? We wanted t create smething useful and fun— a ‘Sesame Street’ experience fr a smart speaker.”
The length f these effects isn’t clear, researchers nte. The study spanned just ne week and the tendency fr survey participants t respnd in ways that make them lk gd culd lead kids t speak psitively abut the app’s effects.
“Our gal is t make the app accessible t a wider audience in the future,” said lead authr Chris (Yue) Fu, a UW dctral student in the iSchl. “We’re explring the integratin f large language mdels — the systems that pwer tech like ChatGPT — int ur prttype and we plan t wrk with cntent creatrs t adapt existing sciemtinal learning materials int ur system. The hpe is that these will facilitate mre prlnged and effective interventins.”
      8. What can we learn abut Self-Talk?
      A. It encuraged kids t engage in psitive talking.
      B. It culd help kids explain cmplicated cncepts.

Mre than a third f the wrld’s ppulatin lives in dry lands, areas that experience significant water shrtages. Scientists at the University f Texas at Austin have develped a unique slutin t help peple in these areas access clean drinking water.
They develped a lw-cst gel film (凝胶膜) that can pull water frm the air in even the driest climate. Cmbining tw simple ingredients, cellulse and knjac gum, the gel is inexpensive t prduce. Just ne kilgram f gel can absrb up t 6 liters f water in a dry climate. Fr thse living in a climate with relative humidity (湿度), ne kilgram f gel can cllect up t 13 liters f water a day. As the gel is s inexpensive and easy t make, it may ffer a way f prviding drinking water t cuntries with water shrtages.
Previusly, researchers have harvested fresh water frm fg and dew, but that nly serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water frm desert air are typically energy-intensive and d nt prduce much. In fact, this gel is a vast imprvement frm previus water harvesting technlgies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel dubles this amunt, uses n energy and is simple t perate and it can be made int a shape r size that best suits the user.
“This new wrk is abut practical slutins that peple can use t get water in the httest, driest places n Earth,” said Guihua Yu, prfessr at the Cckrell Schl f Engineering. “This culd allw millins f peple withut cnsistent access t drinking water t have simple, water generating devices at hme that they can easily perate.”
“This is nt smething yu need an advanced degree t use,” the paper’s lead authr, Yuhng Gu said. “It’s straightfrward enugh that anyne can make it at hme if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning n making a thicker gel that will increase the yield, making this technlgy a practicable slutin t drught.
      12. What can we knw abut the gel film frm paragraph 2?
      A. It can increase the humidity f the air.
      B. It can harvest drinking water frm the air.
      C. It has been widely applied in desert areas.
      D. It csts lts f mney and energy t prduce.
      13. What is the third paragraph mainly abut?
      A. The advantages f the new gel.
      B. The prcess f prducing the new gel.
      C. The tugh living cnditins in dry regins.
      D. The thery f water harvesting technlgies.

      A. An advanced degree.B. An expensive material.
      C. A water harvesting device.D. A nn-stpping cnditin f drught.
