It was just after 17 : 00 n a mid-September evening at a histrical Church in Harlem, New Yrk City. Mstly the lw-incme black neighbrhd sat at dining tables. In frnt f them was a menu listing three curses, which they nly saw n TV. Each dish was prepared with “leftver” ingredients (食材), ffered free f charge and placed alngside a blue card that read “yu are lved” in hand-written script.
This is ne f 14 cmmunity centers created arund the wrld in cities like Milan, Paris, Mérida, Lima, Sydney and nw New Yrk thrugh three-Michelin starred chef Massim Bttura’s Fd fr Sul prject. He started the prject in 2016 with his wife, Lara Gilmre, t help fight the glbal prblem f fd waste — by using ingredients that might therwise be thrwn away by suppliers — and t give scially and ecnmically vulnerable peple access t high quality meals.
Partnering with architects, artists and cmmunity leaders, the prject is transfrming spaces, which are nt fully taken advantage f, such as churches and even a histrical hme int intentinally designed cultural centers equipped with kitchens, dining rms and ther facilities that help create a sense f well-being, cnnectin and inclusin.
When I asked Bttura why he created such thughtful meals within beautifully appinted spaces fr the lw-incme, he tld me that everyne deserves respect and beauty — and f curse, healthy fd. “They cme in and are cmpletely lst because they’re nt used t cming int beautiful places like this. But nce they’re here, they realize that this place is their place. It’s nt my place,” he said.
Bttura’s philsphy is ne that cmes frm the heart. T-shirts wrn by vlunteers at his cmmunity centers say “cking is an act f lve”, and he appraches the fd served there with as much care as he des at his restaurants — “prbably even mre”, he said since the diners are extremely stressed and need healthy fd t feel better. Bttura insists that it’s imprtant t change the language arund the fd served in his cmmunity centers.
Why des the authr describe such a scene in the first paragraph?
      A. T intrduce Bttura’s prject.B. T shw the appeal f the dishes.

The wrld is awash in pesticides (杀虫剂). Fully 3 billin kilgrams are thught t be sprayed (喷洒) nt crps wrldwide every year, f which nly a small amunt is needed. The extra chemicals are knwn t run ff nt land and int watercurses, with damaging envirnmental and health effects. The use f agrchemicals cntinues t grw: glbal sales f pesticides rse t $79bn in 2022, accrding t S&P Glbal Cmmdity Insights, part f a big research grup. The gd news is that a number f new spraying methds emplying artificial intelligence (AI) are being cmmercialised, prmising t cut the amunt f pesticides a farmer needs t spray by 90%.
Precisin spraying is the future. This is where AI cmes in. Fr instance, Dysn Farming, an agricultural prject led by James Dysn, a British inventr, is using a prcess develped by Bilberry, a French cmpany. This invlves sme cameras spread alng the lng arms f an agricultural sprayer. The pictures taken by the cameras are analyzed with image-recgnitin sftware trained t recgnize weeds. The system then individually turns the arms’ 144 spray heads n r ff whenever pesticides are t be applied.
Even greater levels f precisin spraying are prmised by AgZen, a firm frm the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy. Its team came up with a mnitring system called RealCverage. Capable f being adapted t existing sprayers, RealCverage cnsists f tw camera-based sensrs n each spray arm, ne placed slightly ahead and the ther just behind. As the sprayer mves alng, the firm’s AI identifies images f leaves caught by the first camera and cmpares them t images btained by the secnd. This allws the number f drplets left hanging nt the leaves t be calculated.
AI spraying prvides a huge increase in the depth f knwledge available t farmers, essentially allwing them t measure spray results in terms f millilitres (毫升) per leaf, instead f litres per acre. As the system wrks with ther spray technlgies, AgZen is als discussing pssible cperatin with equipment suppliers and cntract-spraying businesses.
What prblem is presented in paragraph 1?

      D
Peple’s first memries are all autbigraphical (自传式的), r memries f significant experiences in their lives, and these events typically didn’t happen befre the age f 2 r 3. In fact, mst peple can’t remember things frm the first few years f their lives—a phenmenn researchers have called infantile amnesia.
Hwever, research suggests that infants can frm ther kinds f memries. Within the first few days f life, infants can recall their wn mther’s face and distinguish it frm the face f a stranger. A few mnths later, infants can demnstrate that they remember lts f familiar faces by smiling mst at the nes they see mst ften.
But if s, why d peple experience infantile amnesia? Thugh it still isn’t clear whether it’s because we can’t frm autbigraphical memries, r whether we just have n way t retrieve (找回) them, scientists have a few guesses.
One is that autbigraphical memries require yu t have sme sense f self. Researchers have tested this ability using a mirrr recgnitin task called the ruge test. It invlves marking a baby’s nse with a spt f red lipstick.
Researchers then place the infant in frnt f a mirrr. Infants yunger than 18 mnths just smile at the baby in the reflectin, nt shwing any evidence f recgnizing themselves r the red mark n their face. Between 18 and 24 mnths, infants tuch their wn nse, even lking embarrassed, suggesting that they cnnect the red dt in the mirrr with their wn face—they start t frm sme sense f self.
Anther pssible explanatin is that because infants dn’t have language until later in the secnd year f life, they can’t frm narratives abut their wn lives that they can later recall. Finally, the hippcampus (海马体), which is the regin f the brain that’s largely respnsible fr memry, isn’t fully develped in the infancy perid.
Scientists will cntinue t investigate hw these factrs may cntribute t infantile amnesia.
      32. What can infants d in their first few mnths?
      A. Memrize mst f their family members.
      B. Distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar faces.
      C. Remember a string f events frm the recent past.
      D. Identify their wn reflectins in the mirrr.
      33. What d infants tend t d after 18 mnths, accrding t the ruge test?
      A. See their reflectins as themselves.B. Ignre the marks n their faces.
      C. Enjy playing with their reflectins.D. Shw a strng interest in the mirrr.
      34. What culd be a cause f infantile amnesia, accrding t the text?
      A. Infants’ inability t recall memries.B. Infants’ immature hippcampus.
      C. Infants’ undevelped cmmunicatin skills.D. Infants’ unsteady autbigraphical memries.
      35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
      A. When d babies start remembering things?B. Why is it hard t retrieve lst memries?
      C. Hw d kids frm their first memries?D. Why can’t we remember being a baby?

Many students feel like they simply d nt have strng memry skills. Frtunately, thugh, anyne can train and develp their memrizing abilities. Here are sme simple tips t try.
Link it. Cnnect the infrmatin yu are trying t memrize t smething that yu already knw. Material in islatin (孤立) is mre difficult t remember than material that is cnnected t ther cncepts. Self-test. Test yurself every s ften by actively recalling the infrmatin yu are trying t study. Make sure t actively test yurself. ____37____ Often, students think they remember material just because it is familiar t them when they reread it. Instead, ask yurself questins and frce yurself t remember it withut lking at the answer r material. ____38____ Yu can then g back t ne f the memry tricks t help yurself memrize it.
____39____ Fr a cncept t mve frm yur temprary wrking memry t yur lng-term memry, tw things need t happen: the cncept shuld be memrable and it shuld be repeated. Use repetitin t firmly plant infrmatin in yur memry. Repetitin techniques can invlve things like flash cards and self-testing. Space ut yur studying and repetitin ver several days. ____40____ Spacing it ut and gradually extending the times in between can help us becme mre certain f ur mastery and lck the cncepts int place.
      A. Use distributed practice.
      B. Repetitin is never enugh.
      C. D nt simply reread ntes r a textbk.
      D. This repetitin is pwerful fr lng-term memry.
      E. Then increase the time in between each study sessin.
      F. This will help yu identify areas yu are struggling with.
      G. Link these tw by imagining thrwing yur phne int a biling cean.

Maeja was respnsible fr watching her yunger brther, Jungh, and sister, Kyunghee, as they walked hme frm schl. The crwded streets f Yesu, Suth Krea, were filled with bicycles and cars rushing by. Jungh and Kyunghee frequently cmplained f being tired and hungry, s they stpped t rest.

When they finally arrived hme, Maeja’s mther Umma was busy in the kitchen, preparing dinner n their single burner stve (炉具). By the time Appa arrived, dinner was ready.
