Hw can peple speak their mind withut saying anything? This is a questin that scientists have aimed t answer fr a lng time. Researchers recently brught an upgraded device that can translate users’ brain waves int daily speech.
Previusly, the team led by Edward Chang at the University f Califrnia, San Francisc, develped an Al-based system that can identify up t 50 cmmnly used wrds based n the participant’s brain waves. The participant was a paralyzed (瘫痪的) man wh had been implanted with 16 electrdes (电极) under his skull.
Accrding t their paper published in Nvember, the team upgraded the system which can nw translate thughts int cmplete sentences n a cmputer screen.
Their tests shwed that the device culd decde silently spken letters frm a 1,152-wrd vcabulary at a speed f abut 29 characters per minute. The accuracy was up t 94 percent. “It shws strng prmise fr restring cmmunicatin by tapping int the brain’s natural speech machinery,” Chang said t the university’s news website.
Hwever, this methd can still be prblematic since users still need t underg surgery. Scientists at the University f Texas, US, have tried t translate peple’s thughts withut even tuching their heads, reprted Live Science.
The new technique is called fMRI, r functinal magnetic resnance imaging (功能性磁共振成像). It’s a safer way f “reading” brain activity. Active brain cells have mre xygen. By tracking these cells, scientists can translate brain activity.
The team asked participants t listen t 16 hurs f radi shws while scanning their brains. Then they used a cmputer algrithm (算法) t create a stry based n the fMRI recrding. It matched the radi shws pretty well.
Als, the algrithm culd basically explain the stry f a silent mvie that the participants watched. The team aims t develp this technlgy s that it can be used in brain-cmputer interfaces (脑机接口) designed fr peple wh cannt speak r type.
      24. What d we knw abut the device mentined in Para 2?
      A. It was implanted int a man’s heart.
      B. It can help restre patients’ lst memry.

      D. It can identify abut 50 rarely used wrds.
      25. Hw des fMRI “read” peple’s minds?
      A. By tracking their active brain cells.
      B. By putting electrdes int their brains.
      C. By recrding their reactin t radi shws.
      D. By matching their brain activity with their habits.
      26. Why is fMRI chsen cmpared t the first device mentined in the stry?
      A. It’s cheaper.B. It’s mre accurate.C. It’s smaller in size.D. It’s safer.
      27. What can be cncluded abut fMRI frm the last tw paragraphs?
      A. It can nly read what participants hear.
      B. It can be used in brain-cmputer interfaces.
      C. It can read every detail f participants’ minds.
      D. It cannt wrk ut what peple imagine in their heads.
      【答案】24. C 25. A 26. D 27. B

Next time yu’re with a lved ne, cnsider trying an awkward experiment: Take a mment f silence and gaze int each thers eyes. By the time yu reach abut fur secnds, things will prbably start t feel uncmfrtable. Yet the precise reasn why is tricky t pin dwn with a scientific lens.
“There’s smething in that lking that has meaning, sustainable meaning,” says Jy Hirsch, a neurscientist at Yale Schl f Medicine, “The mechanism fr cnnectin has never really been understd.”
Several years ag, her team figured ut hw t adapt an existing neurimaging (神经成像) tl called functinal near-infrared spectrscpy(fNIRS), fr the purpse f analyzing the brains f tw peple during natural interactins. With these brain imaging tls, Hirsch is expanding the scial neurscience field int what she refers t as “the neurscience f tw.”
In the research, her teams have revealed a pwerful regin f the brain that is assciated with eye cntact. Specifically, fNIRS experiments have demnstrated that in-persn eye cntact seems t be cnnected t a brain part assciated with language prductin and receptin, as well as the primary sensry crtex (额叶), which is fundamental t prcessing sensatins like physical tuch, pain and temperature. In simple terms: “The eyes have privileged access t large parts f the brain,” says Hirsch.
Hirsch’s experiments have als revealed the unique tendency fr tw brains t synchrnize (同步) during eye cntact and cmmunicatin. A research f Dartmuth Cllege has similarly highlighted hw expansin f pupils (瞳孔) can synchrnize during a cnversatin t indicate “shared attentin” between tw peple, accrding t a 2021 study. Interestingly, thse researchers fund that precise mments f shared eye cntact actually decrease the pupil synchrny between tw peple, perhaps in a beneficial way.
Ultimately, each f these studies sparks just as many new questins as it answers - a reality that is perfectly fine with Hirsch.“Yes indeed, the ld philsphers were right.” she says. “Faces and brains wrk tgether like lcks and keys.”
      28. What d we knw abut the awkward experiment frm the first tw paragraphs?
      A. It will be a lng time befre yu feel cmfrtable.
      B. Yu can sense smething frm each ther’s eyes.
      C. Scientists have explained the reasn fr it clearly.
      D. There is n link between eye cntact and feelings.
      29. What is Paragraph 4 mainly abut?
      A. Why the brain respnds t eye cntact easily.
      B. Hw the language is prduced in the brain.
      C. What the functin f primary sensry crtex is.
      D. Hw the regins f the brain are shaped.
      30. What des the synchrnizatin f pupils mean during a cnversatin?
      A. The interactin is fun.B. The cnversatin is interrupted.
      C. The tw feel cnnected.D. A new cnversatins t start.
      31. Why des Jy Hirsch qute the philsphers’ wrds at the end?
      A. T further prve her findings are quite true.
      B. T emphasize the imprtance f their research.
      C. T shw the cmplexity f the phenmenn.
      D. T stimulate peple’s interest in further study.
      【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. A

Grwing evidence shws that dancing can bst brain health and help manage neurcgnitive (神经认知的) disrders. S what is it abut dance that’s different frm ther regular exercises?

One grup practiced dance and the ther did a traditinal exercise prgram with cycling and strength training. While bth grups imprved their level f physical fitness, the dancers grew mre white and gray matter in the parts f their brains respnsible fr cgnitive prcesses. Bth white and gray matter typically decline as we get lder, making cmmunicatin in the brain slw.
Imagine yur brain is a city with lads f rads. The researchers assume, the changes brught by dancing cntribute t brain plasticity, which is like the city’s ability t build new rads, repair ld nes r even change the directin f traffic based n hw ften the rutes are used and what the city needs.
In additin t the physical and neurlgical (神经学的) benefits, dance can als help peple accept what their bdies can and can’t d. Dawnia Baynes, 44, develped multiple sclersis (MS) after her bdy lst all feeling frm the chest dwn. She recently jined an nline dance prgram fr peple with MS. Nt nly has it imprved her range f mtin, it has als helped her vercme her fear f being judged fr hw she mves.
“T see ther peple mving is like I’m mving,” she says, “and knwing that I dn’t have t be prfessinal and super technical in my dancing makes me cmfrtable with where I am right nw.”
