Cathy Brennan calmly paddled her bright yellw kayak (皮艇) dwn the Ptmac River, cntinuing her vyage, the latest f her sl trips n majr waterways. The jurney is a minimalist style: sleeping bag, small tent, rain jacket, change f clthes, first aid kit, apples and cheese sticks. When she’s thirsty, she scps water frm the rivers and pumps it thrugh a filter. “I always drink the river,” she says. Brennan lves being n the rivers, seeing the bald eagles abve, deer n the banks and a fascinating array f bugs and insects that never find their way int hmes.
Hwever, every few days Brennan will find a htel fr the night where she can get a shwer and eat a cheeseburger. She’ll als check in with her husband Jhn, wh has helped her select the river and research the trips at their hme. “He’s my virtual Sherpa with benefits,” Brennan says, laughing. She has a phne with her but rarely calls r texts anyne. Her children usually keep track f her via the transpnder that sends them her lcatin every 10minutes r s.
Brennan knws that sl kayaking is nt fr everyne and she’s nt reckless. Brennan grew up n a lake and was a strng swimmer and bater frm an early age. When ging thrugh rugh rapids, she watches the weather carefully. She is cautius abut where she camps and wh is arund her. She has packed up her gear and headed back ut n the river when she has felt unsafe.
Surely, she is alne n these jurneys but she isn’t lnely. She suggested that we all need sme discnnectin frm the wired wrld t find the wider wrld arund us.

In agricultural, pre-industrial Eurpe, “yu’d want t wake up early, start wrking with the sunrise, have a break t have the largest meal, and then yu’d g back t wrk,” says Ken Albala, a prfessr f histry at the University f the Pacific. “Later, at 5 r 6, yu’d have a smaller supper.”
This cmfrtable cycle, in which the rhythms f the day helped shape the rhythms f the meals, gave rise t the custm f the large midday meal, eaten with the extended family. “Meals are the fundatin f the family,” says Carle Cunihan, a prfessr at Millersville University in Pennsylvania, “s there was a very imprtant intercnnectin between eating tgether and strengthening family ties.”
Since industrializatin, maintaining such a slw cultural metablism has been much harder, with the lng midday meal shrinking t whatever culd be stuffed int a lunch bucket r bught at a fd stand. Certainly, there were benefits. Mdern techniques fr prducing and shipping fd led t greater variety and quantity, including a dramatic increase in the amunt f animal prtein and dairy prducts available, making us strnger than ur ancestrs.
Yet plenty has been lst t, even in cultures that still live t eat. Take Italy fr example. It’s n secret that the Mediterranean diet is healthy, but it was als a jy t prepare and eat. Italians, says Cunihan, traditinally began the day with a small meal. The big meal came at arund 1 p.m. In between the midday meal and a late, smaller dinner came a small snack. Tday, when time znes have less and less meaning, there is little tlerance fr ffices’ clsing fr lunch, and wrsening traffic in cities means wrkers can’t make it hme and back fast enugh anyway. S the frmerly small supper after sundwn becmes the big meal f the day, the nly ne at which the family has a chance t get tgether. “The evening meal carries the full burden that used t be spread ver tw meals,” says Cunihan.
      8. What d we learn abut peple in pre-industrial Eurpe?
      A. They had t wrk frm early mrning till late at night.
B Their life was much mre cmfrtable than that f tday.
      C. They were s busy wrking that they nly ate simple meals.
      D. Their daily rutine fllwed the rhythm f the natural cycle.
      9. What des Prfessr Carle Cunihan say abut pre-industrial Eurpean families eating meals tgether?
      A. It enabled families t save a lt f mney.
      B. It was characteristic f the agrarian culture.
      C. It brught family members clser t each ther.
      D. It was helpful t maintaining a natin’s traditin.
      10. What des “cultural metablism” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
      A. Pace f life.B. Changes in lifestyle.
      C. Scial prgress.D. Evlutinary adaptatin.
      11. What des the authr say abut Italians f the ld days?
      A. They were expert at cking meals.B. They enjyed cking as well as eating.
      C. They ate a big dinner late in the evening.D. They ate three meals regularly every day.
      D
Research has fund that using wd fr cnstructin instead f cncrete and steel can reduce emissins. But Tim Searchinger at Princetn University says many f these studies are based n the false fundatin that harvesting wd is carbn neutral (碳中和). “Only a small percentage f the wd gets int a timber (木料) prduct, and a part f that gets int a timber prduct that can replace cncrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different cuntries, but large amunts f a harvested tree are left t be divided int parts, used in shrt-lived prducts like paper r burned fr energy, all f which generate emissins.
In a reprt fr the Wrld Resurces Institute, Searchinger and his clleagues have mdelled hw using mre wd fr cnstructin wuld affect emissins between 2010 and 2050, accunting fr the emissins frm harvesting the wd. They cnsidered varius types f frests and parts f wd ging twards cnstructin. They als factred in the emissins savings frm replacing cncrete and steel.
Under sme circumstances, the researchers fund significant emissins reductins. But each case required what they cnsidered an unrealistically high prtin f the wd ging twards cnstructin, as well as rapid grwth nly seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they fund a large increase in glbal demand fr wd wuld prbably lead t rising emissins fr decades. Accunting fr emissins in this way, the researchers reprted in a related paper that increasing frest harvests between 2010 and 2050 wuld add emissins equal t rughly 10 percent f ttal annual emissins.
Ali Amiri at Aalt University in Finland says the reprt’s cnclusins abut emissins frm rising demand are prbably crrect, but the stry is different fr wd we already harvest. “Bsting the efficiency f current harvests and using mre wd fr lnger lived purpses than paper wuld cut emissins,” he says. “We cannt just say we shuld stp using wd.”
      12. What is wrng with previus researches accrding t Searchinger?
      A. They gt wrng statistics.B. They used an incrrect cncept.
      C. They included t many factrs.D. They were applied in limited cuntries.
      13. What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
      A. The prcess f the new research.B. The backgrund f the new study.
      C. The challenge f the new research.D. The achievements f the new study.
      14. When will the emissins drp ff greatly accrding t the new study?
      A. When wd grws slwly.
      B. When wd is used t make paper.
      C. When wd is used t build a huse.
      D. When wd is harvested in cuntries like Brazil.
      15. What is Ali Amiri’s attitude tward the new result?
      A. Favrable.B. Dubtful.C. Critical.D. Objective.
