Identifying the chemical makeup f pigment (色素) used in ancient dcuments, paintings, and waterclrs is critical t restring and cnserving the precius artwrks. Hwever, despite numerus effrts, scientists had been unable t determine the surce f flium, a ppular blue dye used t clr manuscripts (手稿) in Eurpe during the middle ages — frm the 5th t the 15th century. Nw, a team f researchers frm Prtugal has finally uncvered the mysterius ingredient respnsible fr the grgeus blueish-purple clr that helped bring ancient illustratins and texts t life.
The research team began by pring ver instructins penned by Eurpean dye makers frm the 12th, 14th, and 15th centuries. They fund what they were seeking in a 15th-century text entitled The Bk n Hw t Make All the Clr Paints fr Illuminating Bks. Hwever, translating the instructins was n easy task. It was written in the nw extinct Judae-Prtuguese language, and thugh the surce f the dye was traced back t a plant, n name was mentined.
Hwever, by piecing tgether suggestins frm the text, the scientists were able t determine that the dye was made frm the bluish-green berries f the chrzphra tinctria plant. After an extensive search, the team fund a few varieties f the plant grwing alng the radside near the twn f Mnsaraz in suth Prtugal.
The detailed instructins gave the researchers critical clues — including the best time t pick the berries. “Yu need t squeeze the fruits, being careful nt t break the seeds, and then t put them n linen (亚麻).” The scientist says the detail was imprtant since brken seeds plluted the pigment, prducing an inferir quality ink. The dyed linen, which was left t dry, was an efficient way t stre and transprt the pigment during ancient times. When needed, the artist wuld simply cut ff a piece f the clth and dip it with water t squeeze ut the blue clr.
Once the key ingredient had been identified, the researchers began t determine the dye’s mlecular structure. T their surprise, they fund that flium was nt like any ther knwn permanent blue dyes — it was an entirely new class f clr, ne they named chrzphridin. “Chrzphridin was used in ancient times t make a beautiful blue dye fr painting.” the team wrte in the study. “Thus, we believe that this will nt be ur final wrd n this amazing plant and its stry and that further discveries will fllw sn.”
      8. The primary purpse f the study is t ________.
      A. restre and cnserve ancient precius artwrks
      B. determine the substance making up the flium
      C. prve the ancient dye-making technique was rganic
      D. identify which class f clr flium belngs t
      9. The underlined phrase “pring ver” in the secnd paragraph means ________.
      A. discussing publiclyB. testing repeatedly
      C. passing directlyD. reading carefully
      10. What can be learned abut the blue dye flium?

      C. It culd be carried and used easily.

      D. when and where the discvery f the dye was made

      The Human Spark
“What is civilizatin?” asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ag in the seminal BBC series n the subject. “I dn’t knw, and I can’t define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recgnize it when I see it, and I’m lking at it nw. ”And he turned t gesture behind him, at the saring Gthic twers and flying buttresses f Ntre Dame (巴黎圣母院).
It seems inhuman t care mre abut a building than abut peple. That the sight f Ntre Dame ging up in flames has attracted s much mre attentin than flds in suthern Africa which killed ver 1,000 aruses understandable feelings f guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight f the cathedral’s cllapsing steeple is in fact prfundly human – and in a particularly 21st-century way.
It is nt just the ecnmy that is glbal tday, it is culture t. Peple wander the wrld in search nt just f jbs and security but als f beauty and histry. Familiarity breeds affectin. A building n whse sunny steps yu have rested, in frnt f which yu have taken a selfie with yur lved ne, becmes a warm part f yur memries and thus f yurself.
This visual age has endwed beauty with new pwer, and scial media have turned great wrks f art int superstars. Only a few, thugh, have achieved this status. Just as there is nly ever a handful f wrld-famus actrs, s the panthen f glbally recgnizable cultural symbls is tiny: the Mna Lisa, Michelangel’s David, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid – and Ntre Dame. Disaster, t, is visual. In the 24 hurs after the fire started, vides n scial media f the burning cathedral were viewed nearly a quarter f a billin times.
Yet the emtins the sight arused were less abut the building itself than abut what lsing it might mean. Ntre Dame is an expressin f humanity at its cllective best. Nbdy culd lk up int that vaulted ceiling withut wndering at the genius f the thusands f annymus craftsmen wh, ver a century and a half, realized a visin s grand in its structure and s delicate in its detail. Its survival thrugh war and revlutin cnnects the present t the past.
The fire als binds peple t each ther. The utpuring f emtin it has brught frth is prf that we are all in it tgether. When natinalism is a rising threat, shared sadness makes brders suddenly irrelevant; a lve f culture has the pwer t unite. When extremism divides Muslim frm Christian and religius peple frm nn-religius, thse f all faiths and nne are murning tgether.
And it will be rebuilt. The mrning after the fire, the many Parisians wh went t the cathedral t murn its destructin fund cmfrt instead. Althugh the spire is gne, the twers are still standing and it seems likely that the whle building can be revived. The effrt t rebuild it, like the fire, will bring peple tgether. Within 24 hurs, €600m ($677m) had been raised frm businesses and rich peple, and a rash f crwdfunding campaigns started. A high-reslutin laser scan f the building, carried ut recently, shuld help.
It will never be the same, but that is as it shuld be. As Victr Hug wrte in The Hunchback f Ntre Dame, “Great edifices, like great muntains, are the wrk f centuries. Art is ften transfrmed as it is being is the architect. The natin is the builder.”
      12. Accrding t the authr, ______.
      A. we shuld nt care mre abut a building than we d abut peple
      B. it’s understandable that the flds in Africa has attracted mre attentin
      C. it’s human fr peple t feel deeply srry fr the destructin f Ntre Dame
      D. peple are suppsed t feel guilty if they are mre cncerned abut buildings
      13. In 21st century, what make great wrks f art even mre ppular?
      A. The beauty f art and value f culture
      B. Peple’s search fr jbs and sense f security
      C. The expressin f humanity and amazing craftsmanship
      D. The arrival f visual age and ppularity f scial media
      14. The authr believes that culture ______.
      A. is an expressin f humanity at its cllective best
      B. aruses emtins and reminds peple what they are lsing
      C. brings peple tgether regardless f their natinality and religius belief
      D. threatens the utpuring f emtins and makes peple’s sadness irrelevant
      15. Which wrd can best describe the writer’s attitude twards the rebuilding f Ntre Dame?
      A. PsitiveB. NegativeC. NeutralD. Cncerned
