Tpher White spends s much time walking in the frest and thinking abut hw quickly we’re lsing it. The engineer is determined t stp glbal defrestatin. Funder f the San Francisc-based nn-prfit Rainfrest Cnnectin, White has develped a small but clever strategy: using ld cell phnes t listen fr the sund f destructin.
Frests are disappearing wrldwide, and fast:an area abut half the size f England is lst each year. The Amazn has lst clse t ne-fifth f its rainfrest cver in the last fur decades. Frest lss nt nly harms wildlife, including many species that live nwhere else, but it’s als a big cntributr t the greenhuse gas emissin (排放) that cause climate change.
”I didn’t knw any f this when I started,“ says White, wh began his jurney in 2011, when he traveled t Indnesian Brne t help decreasing gibbns (长臂猿).
Between 50 and 90 percent f the lgging that happens in the wrld’s rainfrests is illegal, accrding t White, yet detecting chainsaws (电锯) and ther sunds related t that activity can be tugh, because the air is already filled with the lud unpleasant mixture f sunds frm nature. S he has develped a system in which he installs a cell phne that stays charged by slar cells, attaches an extra micrphne, and listens. Frm there, the device can detect the sunds f chainsaws nearly a mile away.
Because it’s unfeasible t have peple listening t the devices all the time, he added sme “ld-schl data analysis”, s that the cell phne’s cmputers can distinguish a chainsaw’s sund frm thers in the frest. This way, his device can autmatically detect lgging activity and send a text alert t authrities wh can determine if it’s illegal and then stp it.
White ntes that he’s nt alne in the fight: Many peple and rganizatins are wrking tirelessly t stp frests frm disappearing. Fr instance, lcal grups are particularly active in frest cnservatin effrts, White says.
S far, his mnitring devices have been used in Camern, Ecuadr, Peru, and Brazil and will sn be used in Blivia. It’s nt just abut listening fr lgging. The same technlgy that can pick ut the buzz f a chainsaw can pick ut the sunds f specific birds, which is why Whtie sees the frest recrdings as a ptential science tl. He’s urging bilgists and eclgists t use his mnitring system anywhere, whether it’s a remte frest r a park in Lndn. “The mre we learn abut these places,” he says, “the easier it’ll be t prtect them.”
      8. The secnd paragraph is mainly abut .
      A. the measures t prevent frest lss
      B. the causes and effects f frest lss
      C. the areas that suffer great frest lss
      D. the urgency abut reducing frest lss
      9. What des the underlined wrd “unfeasible” in Paragraph 5 mst prbably mean?
      A. Impractical.B. Unnecessary.C. Pssible.D. Significant.
      10. In Tpher White’s pinin, we shuld prtect nature based n .
      A. ur advanced technlgyB. ur strng teamwrk spirit
      C. ur gd understanding f itD. ur envirnmental awareness
      11. What wuld be the best title fr the passage?
      A. Effrts shuld be taken t preserve nature
      B. Yur ld cell phne can help save the rainfrest
      C. Old cell phnes can be used fr helping gibbns
      D. A creative way is being used t prtect specific birds
      D
We all knw that unpleasant feeling when we’re talking abut smething interesting and halfway thrugh ur sentence we’re interrupted(打断). But was that really an interruptin? The answer depends n whm yu ask, accrding t new research led by Katherine Hiltn frm Stanfrd University.
Using a set f cntrlled audi clips, Hiltn surveyed 5,000 American English speakers t better understand what affects peple’s perceptins(认知)f interruptins. She had participants listen t audi clips and then answer questins abut whether the speakers seemed t be friendly and engaged, listening t ne anther, r trying t interrupt.
Hiltn fund that American English speakers have different cnversatinal styles. She identified tw grups: high and lw intensity speakers. High intensity speakers are generally uncmfrtable with mments f silence in cnversatin and cnsider talking at the same time a sign f engagement. Lw intensity speakers find it rude t talk at the same time and prefer peple speak ne after anther in cnversatin:
The differences in cnversatinal styles became bvius when participants listened t audi clips in which tw peple spke at the same time but were agreeing with each ther and stayed n tpic, Hiltn said. The high intensity grup reprted that cnversatins where peple spke at the same time when expressing agreement were nt interruptive but engaged and friendlier than the cnversatins with mments f silence in between speaking turns. In cntrast, the lw intensity grup perceived any amunt f simultaneus (同时) chat as a rude interruptin, regardless f what the speakers were saying.
“Peple care abut being interrupted, and thse smalt interruptins can have a massive effect n the verall cmmunicatin,” Hiltn said. “Breaking apart what an interruptin means is essential if we want t understand hw humans interact with each ther.”
      12. What des Hiltn’s research fcus n?
      A. What interruptins mean t peple.B. Where interruptins are accepted.
      C. Hw t avid getting interruptedD. Why speakers interrupt each ther.
      13. What d participants f the study need t d?
      A. Recrd an audi clip.B. Answer sme questins.
      C. Listen t ne anther.D. Have a chat with a friend.
      14. What d lw intensity speakers think f simultaneus chat?
      A. It’s imprtant.B. It’s interesting.C. It’s inefficient.D. It’s implite.
      15. What can we learn frm Hiltn’s research?
      A. Cnversatinal styles affect perceptins f interruptins.
      B. Cmmunicatin is the very basis f ur everyday life.
      C. Interruptins during cnversatins cntribute t thinking.
      D. Language barriers will always exist regardless f the cntent.

根据第二段的“Frests are disappearing wrldwide, and fast:an area abut half the size f England is lst each year. The Amazn has lst clse t ne-fifth f its rainfrest cver in the last fur decades. Frest lss nt nly harms wildlife, including many species that live nwhere else, but it’s als a big cntributr t the greenhuse gas emissin that cause climate change. 词义猜测题。根据第四段的“he added sme “ld-schl data analysis,” s that the cell phne’s cmputers can distinguish a chainsaw’s sund frm thers in the frest. This way, his device can autmatically detect lgging activity and send a text alert t authrities wh can determine if it’s illegal and then stp it. (他补充了一些传统的数据分析,这样手机的计算机就可以把电锯的声音和森林里的其他声音区分开来。通过这种方式,他的设备可以自动检测日志记录活动,并向专家发送文本警报,专家可以确定它是否非法,然后停止它。)”可知,让人们一直听着设备是不可能的,所以怀特做了一些数据分析,使设备可以自动检测日志记录活动,并向专家发送文本警报,因此推断unfeasible表示“不可行的,不切实际的”,与impractical意义相近。故选A。
根据最后一段的““The mre we learn abut these places,” he says, “the easier it will be t prtect them.”(他说:“我们对这些地方了解得越多,就越容易保护它们”。)”

      14. What d lw intensity speakers think f simultaneus chat?
      A. It’s imprtant.B. It’s interesting.C. It’s inefficient.D. It’s implite.
      15. What can we learn frm Hiltn’s research?

根据上文“Oscar Wilde nce said, “Man is least himself when he talks in his wn persn. Give him a mask, and he will tell yu the truth.” Art prvides a way t cmmunicate experiences when peple lack verbal skills.(王尔德曾经说过:“当人以自己的身份说话时,就越不是他自己。
根据后文“As a restrative practice, it allws peple t express themselves in nn-verbal ways, such as drawing and painting. Even a 45-minute creative activity can change a persn's mental state.(作为一种恢复性练习,它允许人们用非语言的方式表达自己,比如绘画。即使是45分钟的创造性活动也能改变一个人的精神状态)”可知,后文提到创造性活动可以改变人的精神状态,即艺术可以影响人的功能。故E选项“艺术疗法,以其自身的方式,可以影响一系列的人类功能”最符合语境,故选E。

      【20题详解】
根据上文“What are art therapists’ superpwer? They can channel dangerus thughts int imaginative artwrks. Fr instance, peple with vilent tendencies might let ut their anger by hitting anther human being.(艺术治疗师的超能力是什么?
