I have been in a dwnturn in the past few weeks, largely due t my ADHD (Attentin Deficit Hyperactivity Disrder) drugs running ut. This has made it hard fr me t imprve mtivatin fr tasks, including the gym. But I had an epiphany last week nce I finally wrked ut: Cutting dwn n exercise was making matters wrse. Physical activity may, in fact, be the best way fr me t fight against my ADHD symptms while I wait fr a new prescriptin (处方)。
My mind is always a bit quieter after a wrkut than it was befre, in a similar way t when I take my medicatins. This makes sense. Mst ADHD drugs wrk by raising levels f a brain chemical called nradrenaline (去甲肾上腺素). This essentially activates ur bdy fr actin by imprving fcus, memry and impulse cntrl. Levels f it als increase threefld during exercise.
That isn’t t say I am ready t give up my medicatins. Results are mixed in the studies available n exercise and ADHD. A 2023 review f 106 studies indicated that exercise significantly imprves impulse cntrl, attentin and the ability t switch between tasks in yung children and adlescents with ADHD. Hwever, it had a weak effect n regulating emtins and wrking memry. The benefits seem t be even less prnunced fr adults. In anther study last year,10 minutes f exercise was shwn t imprve impulse cntrl in 82 adults with the cnditin, yet had n effect n ther ADHD symptms.
While these findings suggest exercise has nly a mdest effect n ADHD, they d emphasize hw wrking ut has ther benefits in additin t physical nes.
Physical activity appears t be prtective. A 2018 study f ver 1.2 millin adults fund that thse wh exercised experienced 43 percent fewer days f pr mental health, n average, than thse wh didn’t. The link was strngest fr team sprts, cycling, and aerbic (有氧的) and gym activities. Exercising fr 45 minutes three t five times a week als seemed t be the sweet spt. Mre wasn’t always better.
As fr me, I am relieved t have discvered a strategy fr keeping my ADHD symptms partly at bay withut medicatins. Even thugh breaking a sweat is the last thing I want t d when I am verwhelmed r in a dwnturn, I nw realize hw critical it is t priritize it.
      4. What des the phrase “an epiphany” in Paragraph 1 mean?
      A. A new medicine.B. A sudden realizatin.
      C. A refreshing break.D. An unexpected pleasure.
      5. Hw des physical activity ptentially help with ADHD symptms?
      A. It has n effect n ADHD symptms in adults.
      B. It imprves physical health rather than mental health.
      C. It lifts levels f a brain chemical similar t medicatins.
      D. It cmpletely replaces the need fr ADHD medicatins.
      6. In the 2023 review, what is the effect f exercise n adults with ADHD?
      A. It is less nticeable fr adults.B. It is ineffective against attentin.
      C. It imprves impulse cntrl in adults.D. It has a strng impact n all symptms.
      7. What is inferred frm the authr’s persnal exercise experience?
      A. Exercise eliminates the necessity fr medicatin.
      B. Exercise barely helps relieve his mental disrder.
      C. Exercise is crucial t managing ADHD symptms.
      D. Exercise is nly beneficial when dne in mderatin.

There are plenty f pp-psychlgy steretypes (刻板印象) abut hw ne’s birth rder affects persnality, frm the verachieving first brn t the peacekeeping middle children t spiled babies f the family. But mst research has nt supprted these steretypes. A 2015 cmmentary in the jurnal PNAS nted that studies ver tw decades fund wildly cntradictry results, with sme shwing very strng cnnectins between persnality traits and birth rder and thers finding nne at all. Many f these studies were small, nn-representative samples.
Nw, a new study argues that there are differences — and that crucially, they depend n family size. This study, published Mnday in the jurnal PNAS, used a different persnality measure called HEXACO, which was develped by Michael Ashtna and Kibem Lee, the tw authrs f the new study. HEXACO categries are hnesty, humility, emtinality, extraversin, agreeableness, cnscientiusness (尽责) and penness t experience. Agreeableness in HEXACO means a tendency tward flexibility, grace, and frgiveness.
The researchers used data frm hexac.rg, where anyne can take a persnality test t find ut where they fall n this scale. Fr 710,797 individuals, they had infrmatin abut birth rder. Fr anther 74,920 individuals, they had infrmatin abut bth birth rder and number f siblings.
In this dataset, the researchers fund that middle children had the highest scres fr hnesty, humility and fr agreeableness, fllwed by yungest siblings, then ldest, then nly children. They als fund that the mre siblings a persn had, the higher they scred in these same traits.
“A cmmnsense pssibility is that when ne has mre siblings, ne must mre frequently cperate rather than act n selfish preferences,” Lee and Ashtna wrte. “This nging situatin might then prmte the develpment f cperative tendencies generally.”
These findings are nt likely t be the last wrd in birth rder research, hwever. In 2020, fr example, anther study searching fr differences between nly children and children with siblings turned up n differences in narcissism (自恋)、And a 2019 study cmparing nly children and peple with siblings using HEXACO fund nly insignificant small differences.
      8. Which is a cmmn steretype abut the impact f birth rder n persnality?
      A. Firstbrns are mre creative.B. Yungest children are spiled.
      C. Only children are mre narcissistic.D. Middle children are verachievers.
      9. What is the new finding regarding persnality differences and birth rder?
      A. Persnality differences lie in family size.
      B. Firstbrns are generally the mst diligent.
      C. Only children have the highest agreeableness scres.
      D. Persnality differences are independent f birth rder.
      10. What might Lee and Ashtna agree with?
      A. Only children tend t be mre humble than thse with siblings.
      B. Yungest children are suppsed t shw mre selflessness than ldest.
      C. Individuals with mre siblings pssibly perfrm better in grup activities.
      D. The siblings in larger families tend t develp mre cmpetitive behavirs.
      11. What des the article suggest abut birth rder research?
      A. The effect f birth rder n persnality prves dubtful.
      B. Birth rder turns ut t be unrelated t persnality traits.
      C. Mre research is necessary t btain cnclusive findings.
      D. The new study cnsists with all previus steretypes.
      【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. C

AI Mrality, a cllectin f 20 fresh essays by varius authrs, mst f whm specialize in philsphy, technlgy r practical ethics (伦理), explres the ethics f the digital wrld. The authrs engage in wide-ranging discussins arund AI and the cnsequences f cmpletely relying n technlgy. Its editr, David Edmnds, ensures yu wn’t hang yur head against the ccasinal absurdity (荒谬) f certain types f schlarly presentatin.
In his intrductin, Edmnds acknwledges the bk is nt cmprehensive, but rather a “brief accunt f the types f cncerns that AI frces us t deal with”. AI gives us an pprtunity t ask what, if anything, makes us truly human. Every new advance f AI re-fcuses such areas f inquiry as mral respnsibility, famess, creativity and authenticity, even as it brings up the fear f a future withut humans being the dminant species.
And what is AI? What makes it different frm, say, the brain-replacing abilities f a calculatr is its ability t learn s that perfrmance n tasks can imprve ver time. Fr example, the prgramme Alpha Zer was given nthing but the rules f chess. It played itself millins f times ver a few hurs and then beat Stckfish, the strngest chess engine at the time.
Like mst new technlgies, the prmise f AI is matched by its risk. Fr example, if Sigmund Freud is right that “lve and wrk are the crnerstnes f being human”, we shuld start wrrying. It is true that AI can get rid f bring, repetitive tasks. Hwever, as philspher Jhn Tasiulas explains in the sectin “Wrk and Play”, 47% f all ccupatins in the US are capable f being cmputerized in the next 10 t 20 years.
He then pses the questin that will gain mre urgency as AI matures: what des it mean t live in a wrld where AI takes ver the tasks that have characteristically given human life its pint? Tasiulas argues that either we will have t few jbs because f AI, r the jb we artificially preserve will seem pintless, since thse perfrming them will knw AI has given human life purpse.
The essays in AI Mrality cver many tpics and all are wrth reading fr the balanced view they give ver the hrizn int a wrld mixed up with, r dminated by, AI. Depending n wh yu are, the bright and easeful landscape f AI may seem full f pssibility. Or yu may say, like English artist Max Beerbhm, upn reading Thmas Mre’s Utpia (《乌托邦》),“S this is Utpia, is it? Well, I beg yur pardn, I thught it was Hell!”
      12. What is the main fcus f the bk AI Mrality?
      A. The latest advancements in AI.B. The ethical implicatins f AI.
      C. The cntrast between AI and man.D. The celebratin f AI develpment.
      13. Why des the authr mentin the prgramme Alpha Zer?
      A. T shw the ptential danger f AI’s replacing human jbs.
      B. T annunce the arrival f the mre pwerful chess engine.
      C. T demnstrate AI’s ability t learn and imprve ver time.
      D. T highlight the ethical cncerns surrunding AI develpment.
      14. Hw des Jhn Tasiulas feel abut AI taking ver jbs?
      A. Optimistic.B. Indifferent.C. Cautius.D. Cncerned.
      15. What wuld be the suitable title fr this article?
      A. AI: Mrals and CnsequencesB. AI: Threats t Human Prgress
      C. AI: Dilemmas in the Digital AgeD. AI: The Definitin f Human Ethics
      【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A
