The Wrld Health Organizatin (WHO) predicts that abut half f the wrld’s
ppulatin will have mypia (近视 ) r nearsightedness by 2050. Our eyesight is getting wrse, but researchers are nly nw beginning t understand why.
Mypia usually starts in childhd. It happens when the eyeball gets t lng and becmes mre val-shaped instead f rund. Nrmally, eyes have a “built-in cntrl” t match grwth with head size, but genes (基因 ) r envirnment can interrupt this, making the eyeball t big fr the lens and crnea (晶状体和角膜) t fcus prperly.
When the eyeballs and the fcusing parts dn’t match, faraway things lk unclear. Signs f mypia can include headaches and feeling tired r strained in the eyes when ding activities such as driving r playing sprts.
While we might think the increased use f screens is the prblem, experts believe the real reasn is spending less time utdrs. “Natural light is necessary fr healthy eye develpment,” says Schwartz. Being in natural light helps make a chemical called
dpamine, which keeps the eyeball grwing nrmally. Indr lights dn’t wrk the same way. Kids shuld try t get at least tw hurs f natural light every day.
Still, using screens a lt is a prblem. “Mst screens are high cntrast—like black text n a white page, r light text n a dark backgrund,” says Schwartz. “The cntrast culd cause mypia.” Clse wrk, like reading and lking clsely at screens, has als been shwn t cause mypia.
Scientists are finding ways t slw dwn mypia. Eye drps with a little atrpine can help kids. Special cntact lenses might als stp mypia frm getting wrse.
Mst peple’s eyesight stps changing in their teens. eye drps But sme get mypia later, like in their 20s t 40s. And mypia can lead t ther eye diseases like glaucma, cntact lenses cataracts, and macular degeneratin as peple get lder.
That’s why regular (定期的 ) eye examinatins are imprtant. T reduce eye strain, try these tips: Read r wrk in gd light (sft backgrund light plus a task light), use nn-glare (防眩的) screens n yur cmputer r TV, and atrpine take breaks ften. Fllw the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, lk 20 feet away fr 20 secnds.
27. Accrding t the passage, what is the real reasn fr the develpment f mypia

Climate change, disease, and hunger are big prblems in the wrld. Climate activists(活动家) need t use bth fear and hpe t get peple t care and take actin. Fear can make peple feel like they need t d smething right away, but hpe can make them feel like they can actually make a difference. Activists must carefully find a balance between negative and psitive advcacy (倡导).
If activists nly use fear, it can backfire. Peple might feel s scared that they just give up instead f trying t help. Psychlgists have fund different feelings peple have when they see scary things abut the climate. These include ec-depressin (feeling very sad) and ec-anxiety (feeling very wrried). Feeling sad can make a persn give up and nt d anything abut the climate, and feeling wrried can make a persn want t avid the prblem. Bth f these feelings can stp peple frm taking actin.
Activists ften use really shcking pictures t make peple take actin. These
pictures might shw sad plar bears, frests that have been cut dwn, r big fires. But
instead f making peple want t help, these pictures smetimes make peple feel like
the prblems are far away and nt imprtant. This can make them stp caring abut the envirnment. It’s kind f like hw ec-anxiety wrks—peple feel s wrried that they just avid thinking abut it.
Withut hpe, fear isn’t an effective mtivatr (激励因素 ). Peple need t believe their actins will make a real difference. Psitive activism (行动主义 ) steps in where negative activism ends. It uses hpe and excitement t mtivate actin, fcusing n the psitive results f taking actin, nt just the bad results f nt acting.
A gd example is the Irish rck band U2. They are famus fr their great music and cncerts. In their latest cncert “Achtung Baby”, they shwed a virtual (虚拟的) wrld f Earth’s wildlife. At first, they shwed animals that were in danger in just ne clr t shw hw bad it was when their hmes were destryed. As the cncert reached its mst exciting part, the clrs gt brighter and mre beautiful, like a big celebratin f life. The perfrmance changed frm negative t psitive, inspiring peple t prtect Earth’s beauty tgether.
Fear is a pwerful emtin. We need fear. But we cannt remain in fear withut
mving frward. While fear will nt disappear, we must fcus ur thughts n hpe.
With hpe as ur guide, a beautiful gal can encurage us t take every step f prgress frward.

32. Which f the fllwing wuld the writer mst prbably agree with
A. Fear alne is nt enugh t make peple take actin.

C. Activists shuld fcus mre n the negative sides f prblems.
D. Peple will take actin if they see beautiful and clrful pictures.
33. What is the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage
A. T advise peple t avid fear when slving envirnmental prblems.
