Feifei Li’s jurney frm a teenager in China t a leading figure in artificial intelligence is nthing shrt f
remarkable.
Brn in Beijing in 1976, Li grew up in Chengdu. Her life tk a dramatic turn when her family mved t
America. Initially, the family didn’t speak English, s the burden f translatin fell n Li. She credited kind
teachers at her new high schl fr helping her vercme challenges, as she develped language skills and regained
her academic excellence. Outside schl, she wrked tirelessly in lw-paying jbs t supprt her family. During
this perid, she felt like an utsider with few friends, suffering frm islatin(孤独).
Despite these hardships, she was accepted int Princetn t study physics. In 1999, Li graduated with hnrs,
befre ging n t cmplete her Ph.D. and eventually jining Princetn’s cmputer science department as an
assistant prfessr.
At Princetn, Li began t pineer ImageNet, a large-scale image database in visual bject recgnitin sftware.
Frustrated by her peers’ inefficient apprach f training cmputers t recgnize ne image at a time, she intrduced
cmputers t a vast number f bjects based n children’s visual learning methds. This led t the creatin f
ImageNet, which invlved a massive labeling effrt fr ver three millin images. Instead f getting supprt within
the Princetn department, she utsurced(外包) the task t the Internet, using an Amazn’s prgram t frce the
jb ut t remte wrkers arund the glbe. Befre lng ImageNet was cmpleted, and it has subsequently had an
enrmus impact n the develpment f artificial intelligence. The database has nw grwn t ver furteen

millin images, and is a fundamental part f cuntless AI applicatins, like self-driving car technlgy.
Beynd her technical cntributins, Li is a faithful advcate fr mral AI develpment. She funded the
Human-Centered AI Institute t advance AI research that imprves the human cnditin. Mrever, Li’s influence
extends t prmting diversity in AI, thrugh initiatives like AI4ALL, which educates histrically excluded talents
in the field. Her devtin t AI develpment earns her the name f “the Gdmther f AI”.

It is generally acknwledged that yung peple frm prer sci-ecnmic backgrunds tend t d less well
in the educatin system. In an attempt t help the children f pr families, a natinwide prgram called “Headstart”
was started in the US in 1965. A lt f mney was pured int it. It tk children int pre-schl institutins at the
age f three and was suppsed t help them succeed in schl. But the results have been disappinting , because the
prgram began t late. Many children wh entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and

intelligence and the parents were nt invlved in the prcess. At the end f each day, “Headstart” children returned
t the same disadvantaged hme envirnment.
T imprve the results, anther prgram was started in Missuri that cncentrated n parents as the child,s first
teachers. This prgram was based n research shwing that wrking with the family is the mst effective way f
helping children get the best pssible start in life. The fur-year study included 380 families wh were abut t
have their first child and represented different scial-ecnmic status, age and family structure. The prgram
invlved trained educatrs visiting and wrking with the parent r parents and the child. The prgram als gave the
parents sme guidance, and useful skills n child develpment.
At three, the children invlved in the “Missuri” prgram were evaluated with the children selected frm the
same sci-ecnmic backgrund and family situatins. The results were bvius. The children in the prgram
were mre advanced in language develpment, prblem slving and ther intellectual skills than their peers. They
perfrmed equally well regardless f sci-ecnmic backgrunds r family structure. The ne factr that was
fund t affect the child,s develpment was the pr quality f parent-child interactin. That interactin was nt
necessarily bad in prer families.
The “Missuri” prgram cmpares quite distinctly with the “Headstart” prgram. Withut a similar fcus n
parent educatin and n the vital imprtance f the first three years, sme evidence indicates that it will nt be
enugh t vercme educatinal unfairness.
8. What caused the failure f the “Headstart” prgram ?
A. The large number f pr families.
B. The disapprval frm children.
C. The late start f the prgram.
D. The lng perid f time.
9. What d we knw abut the “Missuri” prgram ?
A. It fcused n the children,s first schl teachers.
B. It helped the children return t the same hme.
C. It made the children imprved in many aspects.
D. It gave the parents advice n their develpment.
10. Accrding t the passage, what is likely t influence children,s perfrmance ?
A. The number f family members. B. The parent-child cmmunicatin.
C. The intelligence f their parents. D. The teacher-student relatinship.

11. Hw des the authr develp the passage ?
A. By listing figures. B. By making cmparisns.
C. By giving examples. D. By drawing cnclusins.

The missin is simple. Arrive n freign sil, fit in and wait. Then, when the time is right, emerge frm the
shadws and take ver. This prcedure, familiar frm spy fictin as the preserve f sleeper agents, is als the
strategy f certain invasive plant species.
Invasive species that stay put, knwn as sleeper species, are nt hard-wired t d s. Their natural tendency
t expand is, instead, held back by sme external factr. With the climate rapidly changing, Bethany Bradley at the
University f Massachusetts wndered whether alteratins in temperature and rainfall had the ptential t activate
sme sleeper species. As she reprts in a paper in Bilgical Inuvasins, the answer is a definitive yes.
Dr Bradley and her team came t their cnclusins by studying 1,795 plant species in nrth-eastern America
identifiable as freign but nt yet lcally listed as invasive. Of these, 169 were unquestinably demnstrating
invasive behaviur in ther parts f the wrld, and causing damage t their envirnment. That suggested they had
the capacity t cause similar damage in America t.
T determine whether the cnditins cming t the regin wuld activate any f the set 169, the researchers
first identified the cnditins under which these species wuld thrive (旺盛). A number f the plants n their list
were held back by the cld winters that are less and less cmmn in the regin. They als fund that sme ther
species required mre rainfall than is typical.
Accrding t the team’s findings, climate change is n track t awaken 18 sleeper species that culd cause
serius envirnmental and ecnmic prblems. Dr Bradley estimates that they will start t make themselves felt
between 2040 and 2060 if smething is nt dne sn.
The mst practical curse f actin, in her view, is t seek these sleeper species ut befre they are able t
spread. Remving them tday may be expensive, but it will be far cheaper than trying t weed them ut tmrrw.
12. What strategy d sleeper species emply?
A. Rapidly expanding in new envirnments.
B. Patiently waiting fr human interventin.
C. Remaining inactive until cnditins are favrable.
D. Aviding detectin by staying in shadwy-crners.
13. What des the underlined wrd “hard-wired” in Paragraph 2 mean?
第 5页/共 10页
A. Slwly adapted.
B. Slidly supprted.
C. Externally influenced.
D. Naturally prgrammed.
14. What did researchers aim t uncver by fcusing n the 169 species?
A. The ptential risks they culd pse in the future.
B. Their invasive behavir in ther parts f the wrld.
C. The reasns why they failed t survive in America.
D. Pssible ways t make them less cmmn in America.
15. What’s Dr Bradley’s suggestin fr dealing with sleeper species?
A. Let nature take its curse.
B. Preventin is better than cure.
C. Cutting budgets is a tp pririty.
D. Delay actin until it’s necessary.
