Seventh graders at Thurgd Marshall Middle Schl in Rckfrd, Illinis, are learning abut STEM (Science, Technlgy, Engineering, and Mathematics) alng with real-wrld challenges. They have started a new prject: assembling “slar suitcases” t prvide electricity fr schls in Uganda’s Bidi Bidi Refugee (避难者) Settlement, hme t 270,000 Suth Sudanese refugees.
The nnprfit rganizatin, We Share Slar, leads this initiative, prviding science and technlgy prjects fr students that benefit lw-incme areas wrldwide. The prjects teach middle schlers basic electrical cncepts like charges, vltage, amps, and wiring, resulting in a 12-vlt DC slar pwer system fr the refugee cmmunity.
“We’ve learned many things like psitives and negatives, amps, vlts, all that stuff, and hw t wire stuff tgether,” said Pratham Mehta, ne f the Thurgd Marshall students. “We’re taking all this stuff fr granted, and ther cuntries dn’t have all this stuff, like electricity.”
The suitcases will bring electricity t 40 schls in the refugee settlement, which prvide educatin fr ver 12,000 students. They are designed t be easily transprted (thus the suitcase design), which makes them ideal fr lcatins withut electricity, like a refugee camp.
The panels in the suitcase cllect sunlight and harness the energy in a built-in battery. It can then prvide pwer fr up t five light bulbs fr 50 t 60 hurs a week. Depending n the capacity f the system, it can als help pwer small electrnics like phnes r radis. Fr peple in the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement, this kind f pwer can make an enrmus impact.
In fact, We Share Slar has distributed ver 1,000 suitcases t “energy-scarce lcatins” acrss the wrld, with mre than 500,000 students and teachers benefitting frm the pwer they prvide.
“The We Share Slar educatin prgram serves yuth twice,” said Hal Arnsn, cfunder f the rganizatin, “first as an educatinal experience fr American yuth and secnd as a renewable pwer and lighting system fr yuth in parts f the wrld that lack electricity.”
4.Hw are Thurgd Marshall Middle Schl’s students learning abut STEM?

The final week f February 2025 ffered a unique pprtunity fr star watchers t see all seven ther planets f ur slar system align (对齐) in the night sky. Thrughut February, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune were visible, and then Mercury jined them t cmplete the lineup. The exact timing f this event depended n yur lcatin, but it prmised t be a remarkable sight.
These planetary alignments, ften called “planetary parades”, have captured significant media attentin recently. While they were indeed awe-inspiring, it was imprtant t clarify sme cmmn miscnceptins befre yu headed utside t bserve. Fr instance, seeing Uranus and Neptune required binculars r a small telescpe, as they were nt visible t human eyes. Additinally, sme planets appeared lw n the western hrizn arund dusk, while thers were bright and high in the sky after sunset.
A planetary alignment ccurred when planets lined up n the same side f the sun. This happened because the planets rbited the sun in a similar plane, knwn as the ecliptic (黄道). As a result, frm ur perspective n Earth, the planets appeared t frm a line acrss the sky, even if they were nt perfectly aligned in space.
Seeing multiple planets at nce is nt exceedingly rare, but sptting all seven is special. Such events becme rarer with each additinal planet in the lineup. Astrphysicist David Armstrng said this great planetary alignment wuldn’t happen again until 2040. The alignment als cincided with a new mn, which was ideal fr watching stars due t the minimal light it reflected.
On the night f 28th February, the best time t bserve was right after sunset. Mercury, Neptune, and Saturn were lw in the western sky, with Venus shining brightly abve them. While nt all planets might have been visible, the interest in this “planetary parade” was a catalyst fr engagement. Engaging in astrnmy and appreciating the wnders f the slar system was a fantastic experience. If yu had had the chance and interest, yu culd have taken the time t step utside and witness this event.
8.What is the authr’s purpse in writing the first paragraph?
      A.T present a phenmenn.B.T cmpare astrnmical events.
C.T shw the exact bservatin lcatin.D.T list the planets in rder f their brightness.

A.They lked equally bright after sunset.
B.They were tiny and invisible t human eyes.
C.Their height was n the same hrizn at dusk.
D.Their visibility varied with time and psitins.
10.Why is the new mn mentined?
A.T explain hw the ecliptic was frmed.
B.T intrduce the cnditins f the alignment.
C.T state why the alignment was easier t see.

“The study suggests that we can d direct measurement at scale (规模), taking its applicatin beynd carbn markets t ther greenhuse gas accunting effrts like thse cnducted by cuntries t reprt their natinal emissins,” said c-authr Mark Bradfrd, the E. H. Harriman Prfessr f Sils and Ecsystem Eclgy.
T help farmers calculate the cst-benefit f sil management prjects, Eric Ptash, a research scientist frm the Agrecsystem Sustainability Center (ASC) at the University f Illinis, develped an pen-surce web app that allws users t explre the csts and prfitability f sil carbn prjects based n specific parameters: prject size, duratin, analysis csts, and sampling strategy.
“This study suggests that peple may be able t reliably quantify hw much sil carbn is changing due t adptin f climate-smart agricultural and regenerative practices,” said Bradfrd. “If yu can address the measurement and verificatin cncerns arund hw sil carbn stcks are actually respnding, it will help priritize plicies and investments that achieve sil restratin and prtectin, leading t imprved water and nutrient retentin in sils, aeratin, and sil bidiversity. Such healthy sils will be mre resilient t extreme weather and build fd security.”
