In 2023 the Falcn 9 launched ver a thusand tnnes f paylad int rbit. The first stages f the Falcn 9 have been successfully reused after returning frm space and landing themselves mre than 300 times.
“Reentry” by Eric Berger, the senir space editr at Ars Technica, describes hw this was achieved. The ingredients which prduced the Falcn 9 were excellent engineers, a new frm f gvernment supprt fr spaceflight, a hard-driving culture and an extrardinarily demanding bss.

By the time it finally reached rbit — n the furth attempt — SpaceX had burned thrugh almst all the mney that Eln Musk, the cmpany’s funder, had available. Fr the cmpany t have a future, it needed sme big gvernment cntracts, and that required a much larger launcher: the Falcn 9, which required nine f the Merlin engines that pwered the Falcn 1 t be jined tgether.
That challenge fell t Tm Mueller, SpaceX’s first emplyee, wh had develped the Merlin engine in the first place. His team’s effrts led t the arguably cmpany-saving first test firing f the Falcn 9’s first stage in Nvember 2008. “We were ut there beating histry, but Eln was still pissed at us,” Mr Mueller said. “Like everything else we’ve ever dne, it was way slwer than Eln wanted.”
Mr Berger’s bk is full f stries f impressive achievements being met in such ways. It als shws clearly why peple put up with such things. Mr Musk’s emplyees knew that he really cared abut making better rckets, and that he was taking big financial risks. But they came t value his insistence n the verall gal f making a rcket that was largely reusable.
      4. What is “Reentry” abut?
      A. The prcess f reusing the Falcn 9.B. Achievements made by the gvernment.
      C. The persnal life f the demanding bss.D. Elements leading t the Falcn 9’s success.
