It’s ne thing t be expsed t a language. It’s anther t speak it. Ava Silva, 27, wh grew up in the Alabama-Cushatta Tribe (部落), wasn’t fluent in Alabama. “My áap’s first language is Alabama,” said Silva, using the Alabama wrd fr grandmther. “I culd never fully understand it, but I lved sitting beside her and hearing her talk.”
At Harvard, Silva cnnected with Assistant Prfessr f Linguistics (语言学) Tanya Bndarenk, whse WOLF (Wrking n Language in the Field) Lab began studying the inner wrkings f Alabama. Over the summer, Bndarenk and five linguistics students traveled t the Alabama-Cushatta Reservatin in East Texas t dcument, preserve and revitalize the endangered language. During their visit t the tribe, the team surveyed 19 native speakers t learn hw Alabama is spken tday. The team cllected mre than 140 hurs f recrdings that were shared within the cmmunity and are nw being analyzed.
Alabama is n lnger naturally passed n t Alabama-Cushatta children. “In my cmmunity, language is a pint f pain,” Silva said. Fr thse in her grandmther’s generatin, attending primary schl brught their first encunters with English. “They had t try t fit int this English-speaking sciety,” Silva said. “S lts f peple didn’t teach their kids Alabama.”
“It is ne f the stries we encunter all the time,” Bndarenk said. “Other peple cme t take everything else frm them and prhibit peple frm speaking their languages. It’s an imprtant factr in why languages cease t be spken. If the wrk isn’t dne, we’ll lse the languages and even infrmatin abut them cmpletely.”
As a lcal and a linguist, Silva helped WOLF Lab identify native speakers. Silva als believes it’s crucial t dcument, preserve and revitalize native languages such as Alabama, arguing that revitalizatin wrk, in particular, helps native cmmunities cme tgether. Undercnsumptin may be a much-needed mvement bth because f the financial challenges many yung peple face and fr reasns f sustainability. In the age f fast fashin, cheap, pr-quality articles are readily bught and thrwn away, bringing dire envirnmental cnsequences. Up t 60,000 tns f deserted “fast fashin” clthing items may be littering a landfill in the Atacama Desert in Suth America.
Yung peple are respnding psitively t the undercnsumptin vides they cnsume, citing a TikTk cmment n an undercnsumptin pst that read, “I wuld watch s many versins f this! It’s s cl seeing ther peple’s similar anti-cnsumptin-fcused rutines.” Anther cmment read, “Staying n undercnsumptin t mtivate myself t get emtinally unattached t items.”

Utah’s Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, hit a trubling milestne in 2022, drpping t its lwest water level since recrd-keeping began in 1847.
Scientists frm Prtland State University and Oregn State University recently investigated why the lake has reached such histrically lw levels. Their findings, published in Gephysical Research Letters, pint t tw main factrs: decreased water flwing int the lake frm rivers and streams, cmbined with increasing evapratin (蒸发).
“The lake has a lt f scial and ecnmic relevance fr the regin and Utah,” says Siiri Bigalke, the lead authr. “It brings in ver $1.9 billin annually, serves as a vital feeding grund fr millins f migratry (迁徙) birds and enhances snwfall ver the Wasatch Muntain Range.”
The research team created a mathematical mdel t track three main factrs affecting the lake’s water level: hw much water flws in frm rivers, hw much rain falls directly n the lake and hw much water evaprates int the air. They created different situatins t understand hw each factr cntributed t the lake’s decline.
Their findings revealed that reduced river flw played the biggest rle, causing abut three times mre water lss than increased evapratin, which was the secnd mst imprtant factr. Changes in rainfall had surprisingly little impact. Hwever, the researchers discvered smething crucial: while less river water was the main driver f the decline, the lake wuldn’t have hit its recrd lw withut the increased evapratin caused by warming temperatures.
This creates an interesting puzzle fr the future. As the regin cntinues t warm, mre water will evaprate frm the lake’s surface. But as the lake becmes smaller, there’s less surface area frm which water can evaprate. “This self-limiting prcess makes it challenging t predict exactly hw the lake will change in the cming years,” the researchers say.
“The gd news is that the lake respnds quickly when river flws increase, suggesting that better water management culd help restre lake levels. The challenge lies in balancing human water needs with maintaining enugh flw t sustain the lake, all while facing the nging effects f warming temperatures,” the researchers add.
12.What des Siiri Bigalke stress in paragraph 3?
A.The financial prblems in Utah.B.The great significance f the lake.
C.The lake’s ec-friendly surrundings.D.The benefits the study has brught.
13.What des the research find?
A.It is easy t predict hw the lake will change.
B.Changes in rainfall had a surprisingly huge impact.
C.Warming temperatures affected the lake’s decline.
D.Evapratin caused mre water lss than river flw.
14.What attitude d the researchers hld twards the future f the lake?
A.Unclear.B.Cncerned.
C.Generally indifferent.D.Cmpletely negative.
15.What is the best title f the text?
A.Glbal Warming Is Threatening Lakes
B.A Study n a Restred Saltwater Lake
C.Utah’s Great Salt Lake Hit Its Recrd Lw

20.根据下文“which is never smething yu want t d. (这绝不是你想做的事)”可知,后文补充说明这是一件不要作的事,因此划线处要指出一件关于艺术而造成负面影响,或消极意义的内容,衔接下文非限制性定语从句,选项G“Taking anything ut f cntext can lead t misunderstanding art and misinterpreting an artist’s intentins (断章取义任何事物都会导致对艺术的误解,甚至曲解艺术家的创作初衷)”指出了断章取义的危害,符合逻辑。故选G。
