My name is Vienna Cammarta. I’m a hiker frm Italy. I have been a fan f Italian traveler Marc Pl since childhd, which later led me t becme a tur guide. Years f hiking have helped me maintain gd health. Even at 75, I still have n need fr reading glasses.
Abut 20 years ag my interest in China was fueled by a student frm Beijing wh stayed in my hme. The cnnectins we made and the friendships we develped raised my curisity abut China. Fllwing that, I fund myself drawn t The Travels f Marc Pl, reading it ver and ver again t understand China thrugh its vivid descriptins. The descriptin f the ancient Silk Rad in the bk particularly fascinated me.
In 2018 the idea f retracing the ancient Silk Rad came t me, which inspired me t map ut a jurney cvering 22, 000 kilmeters frm Venice t Beijing, passing thrugh 15 cuntries in three t fur years. At first, my children thught it was unrealistic. Hwever, as they bserved my detailed planning, they gave me their full supprt.
My jurney began n April 26, 2022. Fr mre than tw years, I vercame practical challenges and psychlgical pressures, walked thrugh muntains and waters, and crssed cities and villages in different cuntries. Alng the way, I have gained insights int the histry, culture, and custms f each cuntry I visited. As I explred the remains f the ancient Silk Rad, I was struck by the vast changes ur wrld has experienced.
As I jurneyed alng this histrical rute, I witnessed that the Belt and Rad Initiative (BRI), carrying frward the legacy (遗产) f the ancient Silk Rad, has benefited mre and mre peple acrss different cuntries.
Tday, walking n the same “glden ancient rute” with Marc Pl’s bk in hand, I felt a deep sense f pride. Lking back n my jurney, I want t tell friends f my age: Be brave in pursuing yur dreams — nthing is impssible!
      4. What initially inspired Vienna’s interest in China?
      A. A bk she read in childhd.B. A tur guide she met in Venice.

Researchers frm Ggle have built a new weather predictin mdel that cmbines machine learning with cnventinal techniques, ptentially yielding mre accurate frecasts. The mdel, called NeuralGCM and described in a paper in Nature tday, bridges a divide that’s grwn amng weather predictin experts in the last several years.
The cnventinal mdels, which have dminated weather predictin fr the last 50 years, use cmplex equatins (方程) t mdel changes in the atmsphere and give frecasts, but they are extremely slw and expensive t run. Experts are divided n which tl will be mst reliable ging frward. But the new mdel frm Ggle instead attempts t cmbine the tw. “It’s nt srt f physics vs. AI. It’s really physics and AI tgether, ” says Stephan Hyer, an AI researcher at Ggle Research and a c-authr f the paper.
“NeuralGCM shws that when we cmbine AI with the cnventinal physics-based mdels, we can dramatically imprve the accuracy and speed f atmspheric climate simulatins (模拟),” said Stephan Hyer. The paper said NeuralGCM prved faster, mre accurate and used less cmputing pwer in tests against a traditinal frecasting mdel based n atmspheric physics tls called X-SHiELD.
In ne test, NeuralGCM identified almst the same number f trpical strms as cnventinal extreme weather trackers did, and twice the number f X-SHiELD. In anther test based n temperature and humidity (湿度) levels during 2020, the errr rate was between 15 and 50 percent less.
Peter Dueben, anther c-authr f the latest paper, said AI-nly mdels were “ften viewed dubiusly” by experts because they were nt based n mathematical equatins devised (设计) frm physics. Hwever, the cmbinatin f the physics-based mdel with the deep learning mdel “seems t get the best f bth wrlds”, he said, adding that the apprach was a “big step twards climate mdelling with machine learning”. “The appetite is there fr AI, ” Peter says. “But I think a lt f peple still are waiting t see what happens. ”
      8. Accrding t the passage, NeuralGCM is helpful in ________.
      A. bradcasting weather frecastB. preventing further climate changes
      C. bridging the gap between researchersD. building accurate climate mdels
      9. What des the authr want t d by mentining the tw tests?
      A. T analyze NeuralGCM’s wrking prcess.B. T highlight the efficiency f NeuralGCM.
      C. T cmpare NeuralGCM with ther mdels.D. T reveal prblems f cnventinal trackers.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “dubiusly” mean in paragraph 5?
      A. Skeptically.B. Strictly.C. Precisely.D. Curiusly.
      11. What’s Peter Dueben’s attitude t the deep learning mdel?
      A. Disapprving.B. Favrable.C. Anxius.D. Uncertain.
      D
When stressed ut, many f us turn t junk fd fr cmfrt. But new University f Clrad Bulder research suggests this strategy may have the ppsite effect. The study fund that in animals, a high-fat diet destrys resident gut (肠道) bacteria, changes behavir and, thrugh a cmplex pathway cnnecting the gut t the brain, influences brain chemicals in ways that fuel anxiety.
“Everyne knws that these are nt healthy fds, but we tend t think abut them nly in terms f a little weight gain,” said lead authr Lwry. “If yu understand that they als impact yur brain in a way that can prmte anxiety, that makes the risk even higher.” Lwry’s team divided adlescent rats int tw grups: Half gt a standard diet f abut 11% fat fr nine weeks; the thers gt a high-fat diet f 45% fat, cnsisting mstly f saturated (饱和) fat frm animal prducts.
After nine weeks, the animals underwent behaviral tests. When cmpared t the frmer grup, the grup eating a high-fat diet, nt surprisingly, gained weight. But the animals als shwed significantly less diversity f gut bacteria. Generally speaking, mre bacterial diversity is assciated with better health, Lwry explained.
The high-fat diet grup als shwed higher expressin f three genes invlved in prductin and signaling f the neurtransmitter sertnin (神经递质血清素), which is assciated with stress and anxiety. While sertnin is ften billed as a “feel-gd brain chemical,” Lwry ntes that it can lead t anxiety-like respnses in animals.
“T think that just a high-fat diet culd change expressin f these genes in the brain is extrardinary,” said Lwry. “The high-fat grup essentially had a high anxiety state in their brain.”
Lwry stresses that nt all fats are bad, and that healthy fats like thse fund in fish, live il, nuts and seeds can be gd fr the brain. His advice is: Eat as many different kinds f fruits and vegetables as pssible.
      12. What d we knw frm the study by Lwry?
      A. All rats ate the same diet.B. Rats were divided int tw diet grups.
      C. Anxiety was tested befre and after eating.D. Behavir was bserved withut dietary change.
      13. What is the relatinship between gut bacteria diversity and health?
      A. Less diversity indicates better health.
      B. Gut bacteria diversity has n impact n health.
      C. Bacteria diversity is psitively assciated with fitness.
      D. Gut bacteria diversity mainly depends n health.
      14. What can we learn abut sertnin?
      A. It reduces the feeling f pressure.B. It leads t weight gain.
      C. It’s merely affected by healthy fats.D. It can generate anxiety reactin.
      15. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. High-fat diet is the main cause f fat.B. Stay healthy and keep frm gaining weight.
      C. Junk fd cnsumptin can increase anxiety.D. Gut bacteria diversity increases with high-fat diets.
