Tech-Free Classrm: Fstering Deep Learning and Interactin
Like many ther peple, I lve my smart phne, which keeps me cnnected with 21 (large) wrld. I als lve my laptp, because it hlds all f my writing and thughts. Hwever, I knw there are times 22 I need t mve away frm these devices and truly cmmunicate with thers.
On ccasin, I teach 23 curse called Histry Matters t a grup f higher educatin managers. My gals fr the class include a full discussin f histrical themes and ideas. 24 I want students t thrughly study the materials and exchange their ideas with each ther in the classrm, I have a rule - n laptp, iPads, phnes, etc. When students 25 (tell) my rule in advance f the class, sme f them were nt happy.
Mst students assume that my reasns fr this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technlgy. There's a bit f truth t that. Sme students assume that I am anti-technlgy. There's n truth in that at all. The real reasn why I ask students 26 (leave) technlgy at the dr is that I think there are very few places in which we 27 have deep cnversatins and truly engage cmplex ideas. Interruptins by technlgy ften break cncentratin and allw fr t much dependence n utside infrmatin fr ideas. I want students t dig deep within 28 fr inspiratin and ideas.
I 29 (teach) my histry class in this way fr many years and the evaluatins reflect student satisfactin with the envirnment that I create. Students realize that with deep cnversatin and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the curse materials 30 the classrm.

The Art f Fund-raising: Key Steps fr Nnprfit Organizatins t Attract Dnatins
Attracting dnatins is a chief cncern fr nnprfit rganizatins and prjects. An effective, prfessinal dnatin-request letter is a necessary tl fr fund-raising. Researching pssible dnrs and 31 a database f names and rganizatins is ne key t success, but the ability t write a dnatin-request letter has an even greater 32 n successful fund-raising.
Research ptential dnrs via the Internet.
Research small cmpanies in 33 t large fundatins. Smetimes a small lcal cmpany will assist yu in reaching yur gal. A simple appeal t a public-spirited lcal firm may inspire a surprisingly 34 dnatin.
Find the apprpriate cntact persn.
Address yur letter t a real persn wh is in a psitin t entitle a dnatin. Beginning yur letter with "T Whm It May Cncern"r "Dear Cuntry Market" stands little 35 f attracting the attentin f the right staff member.
And then, structure the letter prperly.
Begin yur letter with a vivid and readable descriptin f yur rganizatin's wrk, and 36
a recent success stry. Cntinue with a few general 37 t impress the cntact persn with yur rganizatin's efficiency and effectiveness. Next, describe in full the current prject r effrt fr which a dnatin is needed and wh will 38 . Include all cntact infrmatin including telephne, fax and email, and end by inviting the persn t cntact yu if any 39 infrmatin is needed. Finally, hand n the letter t clleagues fr prfreading and suggestins.
Keep careful recrds f dnatins and send thank-yu letters.
Dnrs ften are willing t cntribute again if they are shwn hw their 40 was put t use. Fllw-up letters can assist in this effrt.
III. Reading Cmprehensin(45')
Sectin A(15')
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A, B,C and D.
Tday, there are many avenues(大街:途径) pen t thse wh wish t cntinue their educatin. Hwever, nearly all require sme 41 in ne's career in rder t attend schl full time. Part-time educatin, that is, attending schl at night r fr ne weekend a mnth, tends t drag the 42 ut ver time and puts the cmpletin f a degree prgram ut f reach f many peple. 43 , such prgrams require a fixed time cmmitment which can als impact 44 n ne's career and family time.
Of the many 45 t teaching and learning, hwever, perhaps the mst flexible and accmmdating is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educatinal methd, which allws the students the 46 t study at his r her wn pace t achieve the 47 gals, which are s necessary in tday's wrld. The time required t study may be set aside at the student's cnvenience with due 48 t all life's ther requirements. Besides, the student may 49 in distance learning curses frm virtually any place in the wrld, while cntinuing t pursue their chsen career. Tutrial assistance may be 50 thrugh regular airmail, telephne, fax machine, telecnferencing and ver the Internet.
Gd distance learning prgrams are characterized by the inclusin f a subject 51 tl with every subject. This precludes(排除) the requirement fr a student t travel away frm hme t take a test. Anther characteristic f a gd distance-learning prgram is the 52 f the distance-learning curse with the same subject materials as thse students taking the curse n the hme campus. The resultant diplma r degree shuld als be the same whether distance-learning r n-campus study is emplyed.
In the final analysis, a gd distance learning prgram has a place nt nly fr the 53 students but als the crpratin r business that wants t wrk in partnership with their emplyees fr the educatinal benefit, prfessinal develpment, and business grwth f the rganizatin. 54 distance learning prgrams fr their emplyees gives the business the advantage f retaining(保留) career-minded peple while 55 t their persnal and prfessinal grwth thrugh educatin.

(A)
In 1969, a ship carrying 90 passengers arrived in Antarctic waters. Since then, Antarctic turism has increased nticeably. Nwadays, ver 35,000 visitrs a seasn came t the Antarctic during summer, with the intentin f visiting clnies f penguins. That wrries many envirnmentalists, wh fear such quantities f peple may be disturbing the penguins. Hwever, a study published in Plar Bilgy by Maureen Lynch f Stny Brk University brings gd news fr penguins, turists and tur-peratrs alike-fr the turists' visits are nt stressing the birds at all.
The cnventinal way f deciding whether visits by turists are stressful t the animals is t recruit a bunch f PhD students t bserve thse animals and make a number f behaviral bservatins when turists are and are nt present. This is difficult and expensive, fr even PhD students need t be hused and fed. Anther chice is t sample the animals' bld and analyze it fr stress hrmnes. The prblem with this is that catching animals t measure their hrmne levels is stressful.
There is, hwever, a third way, which is t lk fr stress hrmnes in animals' drppings(排泄物).Dr. Lynch knew frm previus wrk by her partner that sme stress hrmnes shw up in penguin wastes, and that hrmne cncentratins in drppings went up shrtly after animals were apprached by human beings, and then returned t nrmal later. With that in mind, she decided t cmpare drppings frm penguin clnies visited by lts f turists with thse less visited.
As the researchers expected, all cllected samples cntained related stress hrmnes. Cntrary t their expectatins, hwever, there were n significant differences between samples frm different sites, regardless f the number f visitrs thse sites played hst t. It seems, then, either that penguins d nt wrry abut human visitrs in the first place, r that they quickly get used t them. What is mre, Dr. Lynch 's methd prvides an easy way t mnitr the situatin. If a grwing number f turists put the birds under stress, it will be pssible t advise tur peratrs t cnsider their business at less-visited clnies.
56. What d we knw abut Antarctic turism?
A. It enjyed ppularity in 1969.
B. It attracts visitrs in all the year rund.
C. It had disturbed the penguins.
D. It allws peple t see penguins.
57.The prblem f the cnventinal methd lies in__
A. the difficulty in recruiting PhD students B. cmparisn f penguins' behavirs

59. What can we learn frm the analysis f the cllected samples'?
A. Penguins are hardly stressed by turists. B. Penguins are used t visitrs.
C. Penguins are afraid f visitrs. D. Penguins are always under great stress.

Yu can thank Henry Wadswrth Lngfellw and his pem "Paul Revere 's Ride" fr spreading that tale. N ne knws what, if anything. Revere shuted thrugh the streets f Lexingtn, Massachusetts, thugh we d knw he tld ne guard that "the regulars are cming ut."
The httest part f a chill pepper is the seeds.
Capsaicin, a chemical cmpund that binds t the pain receptrs n ur nerves t prduce that fiery heat, is mst cncentrated in the inner shite rib f the chili pepper. The seeds dn't actually cntain any capsaicin, but they may be cated in it because they tuch the rib.
The Sahara is the wrld's largest desert.
Technically, Antarctica is. The U. S. Gelgical Survey defines a desert as "arid land with meager rainfall (usually less than ten inches per year) that supprts nly rse vegetatin and a limited ppulatin f peple and animals."Antarctica averages nly six inches f rain a year (mstly as snw) and is almst 5.5 millin square miles. The Sahara is nly 3.3 millin square miles.
Chamelens can change their clring t match any backgrund.
The lizards d adjust their skin tne t camuflage(伪装) themselves in certain envirnments, but their clr range is limited. The really vibrant hues yu see n TV and in bks aren't usually meant fr tricking predatrs. Thse chamelens are trying t attract a mate r defend their territry. Male chamelens have even been knwn t change their clrs t appear female, which helps them sneak by ther males withut the threat f a fight.

A. Wadswrth witnessed Paul Revere shut "The British are cming"with his wn eyes.
B. Chamelens change their clring t serve ther purpses ther than cheating their enemies.
C. The absrptin f light by the tissue changes the bld inside ur bdy frm red int blue.
D. The Sahara isn't seen as the wrld's largest desert because it receives less rain than Antarctic.
62. Which f the fllwing might be the best title f the passage?
A. Discveries that are amazing B. Myths that are unknwn
C. Findings that are significant D. Facts that are misleading
(C)
Cmmuter trains are ften stuffy and crwded, and they frequently fail t run n time. As if that were nt bad enugh, Tsuyshi Hndu, a physicist at Thku University in Japan, published a paper in 2002 that gave cmmuters yet anther reasn t feel uncmfrtable. He examined mbile-phne usage in enclsed ces such as railway carriages, buses and lifts, all f which are, in essence, metal bxes. His mdel predicted that a large number f passengers crwded tgether, all talking, sending text messages, r brwsing the web n their phnes, culd prduce levels f electrmagnetic radiatin(电磁辐射)that exceed internatinal safety standards. That is because the radi waves prduced by each phne are reflected ff the metal walls f the carriage, bus r lift. Enugh radiatin escapes t allw the phne t cmmunicate with the netwrk, but the rest bathes the inside f the carriage with buncing micrwaves.
This sunds wrrying. But maybe it isn't after all. In a paper published recently in Applied Physics Letters, Jaime Ferrer frm the University f Ovied in in dispute Dr Hndu's findings. He cncludes that the level f radiatin is safe after all.
The key additin t the new research is the effect f the passengers themselves. While each phne prduces radiatin that bunces arund the car, the passengers absrb sme f it, which has the effect f reducing the verall intensity, just as the presence f an audience changes the acustics(音响效果)f a cncert hall, making it less reverberant(回响的). Dr Hndu's mdel, in shrt, was valid nly in the case f a single passenger sitting in an empty carriage with an active mbile phne n every seat.
Dr Hndu did nt calculate the effect that leaving ut the ther passengers wuld have n the radiatin level. As a result, he significantly verestimated the level f electrmagnetic radiatin. When ne is sitting n a train, Dr Ferrer fund, the mst imprtant surces f radiatin are ne's wn phne, and thse f ne's immediate neighbrs. The radiatin frm these surces far exceeds that frm ther phnes r frm waves buncing arund the carriage. And all these surces tgether prduce a level f radiatin within the bunds defined by the ICNIRP, the internatinal system that regulates such matters.
Peple cncerned abut the effects f mbile-phne radiatin are unlikely t take much cmfrt frm Dr Ferrer's results. They wrry that even small amunts f micrwave radiatin-within the ICNIRP 's limits -may have unfavrable health effects. The evidence s far is ambiguus, incnsistent and inadequate. Indeed, Dr Ferrer says he was surprised at hw little research has been dne in this area.
Yet bth Dr Hndu's results and Dr Ferrer's are based n mathematical mdels, nt physical measurements. Their mdels make assumptins abut the physical prperties f train carriages and their passengers, and bth assume that the radiatin is unifrmly distributed(分配) rather than gathered int "ht spts". But if the debate abut the safety f mbile phnes is t be settled, there must be less reliance n mdels and assumptins, and mre emphasis n hard experimental data.
63. Why des the paper published by Dr Hndu make the cmmuters wrried?
A. Because he hlds the view that cmmuter trains d nt meet internatinal radiatin safety standards.
B. Because the cmmuters fear that the metal walls f the railway carriage will threaten their health.
C. Because the cmmuters are afraid that the time fr banning the use f mbile phne in the railway carriage is appraching.
D. Because he thinks that the radiatin prduced by all the mbile phnes in the enclsed ces will bunce arund and be harmful.
64.What is the cmmuters' reactin after learning abut the new research by Dr Ferrer?
A. They still have cncerns ver the mbile-phne radiatin.
B. They expect Dr Ferrer t carry ut mre researches in this area.
C. They dn't wrry abut the safety f mbile phne any mre.
D. They find the results f all the researches bring.
65. Dr Hndu's research and that f Dr Ferrer share the fllwing similarities EXCEPT__
A.they fcus n a single passenger in the empty railway carriage
B. their findings are develped frm mathematical mdels
C. their mdels are built in a way that the radiatin in the enclsed ces is regularly distributed
D. the mdels are based n assumptins abut the physical prperties f train carriages and the passengers
66.What is the authr's attitude tward the research n the effects f mbile-phne radiatin?
A. He is satisfied with the prgress made s far.
B. He thinks researchers have t depend mre n physical experiments.
C. He is surprised that t little research has been carried ut in this area.
D. He thinks that the mst imprtant thing fr the researcher is t perfect their mdels.

Magazine articles can prvide reluctant readers with a lively writing style that can inspire them t read mre. 68 S a child can finish reading an article withut lsing interest due t a shrt attentin n(持续时间). The writing in magazines als tends t be easy t read, especially if it is a children's publicatin.
By allwing children t read magazines at an early age, parents are encuraging develpment f a useful skill. Magazines and newpers prvide adults with critical news. Getting int the habit f reading magazines as a child will develp the lifelng habit f reading news articles.
69 Magazine articles challenge students t think abut issues they may have never cnsidered r cause them t rethink their wrld view. Infrmatin is available in a wide variety f reading levels because magazines are written fr every audience imaginable. Many publicatins cver the same material in different writing styles that might make it easier fr yur child t cmprehend.
When reading magazines tgether, family members get t learn abut each ther 's interest. 70 Once each family member has finished reading each magazine, parents can even design art and writing prjects fr the whle family t wrk n.
All in all, magazines are valuable fr many peple, but in particular t children. The skills that they use and strengthen when reading magazines can be applied t further study. Encuraging children t read magazines culd change them frm a reluctant reader t a lver f reading.
