      This year brught sme exciting news fr patients f Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Leqembi, a new drug fr the disease made thrugh a US Japanese partnership, has been available in a pilt zne in China’s Hainan prvince since September.
      Being a currently uncurable disease, Alzheimer’s disease damages r even kills nerve cells (神经细胞) in the brain. Damaged cells can cause breakdwns in varius parts f the brain, resulting in memry lss, accrding t the Alzheimer’s Assciatin. A kind f plaque (斑块) made up f prtein is the “suspect”. Plaques build up in the spaces between nerve cells, which can break up the cmmunicatin between cells. Althugh mst peple develp such plaques as they age, Alzheimer’s patients tend t have mre, beginning in the areas respnsible fr memry.
      This July, the Us Fd and Drug Administratin (FDA) fully apprved Leqembi. It became the first Alzheimer’s drug t receive FDA apprval in 20 years. Leqembi is designed t “remve plaques that have already frmed and prevents them frm frming”, US medical expert Jn LaPk tld CBS News. Therefre, the drug can nly be effective in thse wh are in the early stage f the disease. Patients wuld als need t have evidence f plaques in their brain, which can be detected thrugh brain scans r bld tests.
      Sadly, this drug is nt a cure. Accrding t the FDA’s press release, after a 79-week trial n human patients, the drug culd slw but nt reverse (逆转) the develpment f the disease and its related effect n memry. What it ffers is a way fr patients with Alzheimer’s t maintain their ability t live a mre r less nrmal life fr lnger.
