The breakthrugh is cntributed by the large language mdels used by AI “chatbts” such as ChatGPT and their understanding f natural speech. Using these, scientists have been able t match brain activity t whle sentences and their meanings. Three vlunteers spent 16 hurs listening t stries while their brain activity was recrded. They then watched fur silent films while the machine attempted t describe what they were seeing. The translatins weren’t perfect. Has smene ever tld yu smething that made yu dubt yur wn memry r judgment? If s, yu may be a victim f gaslighting: “Gaslighting” is a kind f psychlgical abuse t gain pwer ver thers by purpsely making ther peple think they’re wrng even when they’re right. The term cmes frm Patrick Hamiltn’s play in 1938. Lead character Jack Manningham seeks t cnvince his wife Bella that she is ging crazy, by saying she is imagining the dimming f the gas light in their hme, when it was actually he wh lwered the brightness f the light.
Gaslighting is initially used t talk abut what happens in rmantic relatinships. Hwever, many individuals als experience gaslighting at wrk. In fact, a recent survey has fund that 58% f the respndents said they have experienced gaslighting at wrk. It’s unsurprising since gaslighting usually invlves a pwer relatinship and a need t cntrl thers. In the wrkplace, the dynamics between a bss and his emplyee can be the perfect breeding grund fr this type f behavir. Yu bss may tell yu t handle an assignment in a certain way, but when yu d, he gets annyed and says it isn’t what he wants. It makes yu feel like yur memry is faulty.

But always be careful because gaslighters knw hw t fly under the radar. They are skilled at weakening an emplyee’s cnfidence and sense f reality in a clever and hard-t-prve way.
T prtect yurself, at the end f the cnversatin with yur bss, repeat back what yu have heard and fllw up with an e-mail restating the main pints, dcumenting the interactins between yu tw. But dn’t get yur hpes high that this will autmatically slve the prblem, Rbin Stern, authr f The Gaslight Effect, warns, because it’s hard t get a gaslighter t change his behavir pattern. If things dn’t imprve, yu may want t cnsider getting ut f the gaslighting situatin by lking fr a new psitin.
28. Why des the authr mentin Patrick Hamlitn’s play in paragraph 1?
A. T intrduce a famus play in histry. B. T shw the rigin f the term “gaslighting”.

A. Because emplyees are t sensitive.B. Because bsses are pr cmmunicatrs.
C. Because emplyers want t dminate.D. Because wrk assignments are t difficult.
30. What is suggested fr emplyees t determine if their bss is gaslighting them?
A. E-mailing their bss t ask fr dcuments.B. Having an argument with the bss.
C. Recrding and analyzing their experiences.D. Making a cmplaint t the superirs.
31. What is the authr’s purpse in writing this passage?
A. T intrduce gaslighting’s rigin and its slutins.
B. T highlight gaslighting’s harm and its reasns.
C. T discuss a survey n gaslighting and its effects.

Be mre prductive. That is hw ChatGPT, a generative-artificial-intelligence tl frm OpenAI, sells itself t wrkers. But despite industry hpes that the technlgy will bst prductivity acrss the wrkfrce, nt everyne is n bard. Accrding t tw recent studies, wmen use ChatGPT between 16 and 20 percentage pints less than their male peers, even when they are emplyed in the same jbs r read the same subject.
The first study, published as a wrking paper in June, explred ChatGPT at wrk. Anders Humlum f the University f Chicag and Emilie Vestergard f the University f Cpenhagen surveyed 100,000 Danes acrss 11 prfessins in which the technlgy culd save wrkers time, including jurnalism, sftware-develping and teaching. The researchers asked respndents hw ften they turned t ChatGPT and what might keep them frm adpting it.
Acrss all prfessins, wmen were less likely t use ChatGPT than men wh wrked in the same industry. Fr example, nly a third f female teachers used it fr wrk, cmpared with half f male teachers. Amng sftware develpers, almst tw-thirds f men used it while less than half f wmen did. The gap shrank nly slightly, t 16 percentage pints, when peple in the same firms wrking n similar tasks were cmpared. As such, the study cncludes that a lack f female cnfidence may be in part t blame: wmen wh did nt use AI were mre likely than men t highlight that they needed training t use the technlgy.
Anther ptential explanatin fr the gender imbalance cmes frm a survey f 486 students at the Nrwegian Schl f Ecnmics (NHH). It als fund a gender gap: female students enrlled in the NHH’s nly undergraduate prgramme were 18 percentage pints less likely t use ChatGPT ften. When the researchers separated students by admissin grades, it became clear that the gap reflected the behaviur f mid-and high-perfrming wmen. Lw perfrmers were almst as likely as men t use the technlgy.
Why might this be? The researchers prbed what was ging n with sme clever fllw-up questins. They asked students whether they wuld use ChatGPT if their prfessr frbade it, and received a similar distributin f answers. Hwever, with clear apprval, everyne, including the better-perfrming wmen, reprted that they wuld make use f the technlgy. In ther wrds, the high-achieving wmen appeared t put a ban n themselves. “It’s the ‘gd girl’ thing.” reckns Ms Isakssn. “It’s this idea that ‘I have t g thrugh this pain, I have t d it n my wn and I shuldn’t cheat and take shrt-cuts’.”
32. What d we knw abut ChatGPT gender usage gap accrding t the first study?
A. It is nly fund in a few specific prfessins.
B. It is caused by wmen’s less access t high-tech.
C. It-is partly due t wmen’s lack f cnfidence.
D. It disappears n similar tasks in the same firm.
33. What des Paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
A. NHH students’ ChatGPT use in different cases.
B. Cmparisn f ChatGPT use amng NHH students.
C. Prfessrs’ impact n NHH students’ ChatGPT use.
D. Reasns fr tp NHH female students’ self-restrictin.
34. What is the reasn fr high-achieving wmen’s behavir accrding t Ms Isakssn?
