Hw ften is yur mind quiet? If yu’re a typical human being, the answer is prbably very rarely. Fr mst f ur days, ur attentin is fcused n external things—the tasks f ur jbs, TV prgrams, r scial media interactins. In the mments when ur attentin isn’t fcused externally, it’s usually fcused n what is called “thught-chatter”—a stream f mental assciatins cnsisting f expectatins f the future, memries, daydreams, and s n.
But frm time t time, we all experience mments when ur thught-chatter quiets dwn, r even disappears altgether. In these mments, we experience a sense f great well-being. We feel a sense f inner harmny. We feel as if we’re free f prblems, and feel satisfied with ur lives as they are.
There are many activities that have the effect f quieting ur minds, and s prduce a state f well-being.
Fr example, think abut what happens when yu g walking in the cuntryside. Yu might feel stressed when yu start ut, but slwly, after a cuple f miles, yur mind begins t settle dwn. The beauty and stillness f nature attracts yur attentin and yu’re n lnger in yur thught-chatter. By the end f the walk yu feel almst like a different persn. Yu feel mre alive, and much happier—largely because yur mind is nw quiet.
This is why peple lve t lk at beautiful wrks f art. When peple see the paintings f Mnet r van Ggh, they experience a mind-stpping mment, in which they’re taken ut f their thinking minds and experience a sense f great well-being.
The strange thing is, thugh, that mst f the time this happens uncnsciusly We usually dn’t assciate this well-being with a quiet mind. And we usually dn’t think f a quiet mind as the aim r result f these activities.
Our estimate f hw enjyable an activity is may depend n its mind-stpping capacity. In ther wrds, the very best perfrmances—and the mst rewarding activities—are thse which are s attractive and intense that they can cmpletely stp ur minds.
I’m nt saying that inner quietness is the nly reasn why we enjy these activities. Nevertheless, we shuld certainly becme mre aware f the assciatin f a quiet mind with well-being. And at the same time we shuld be aware that it’s pssible fr us t cnsciusly and directly create a quiet mind; rather than as a byprduct f certain activities. And in the end we might develp a permanent quiet mind and attain a state f nging cntentment and harmny.
    28. What can be inferred abut thught-chatter?
    A. It requires a lt f practice.
    B. It might be unpleasant at times.
    C. It might be a talk with a friend.
    D. It helps reach a state f silence.
    29. What are the examples f activities mentined in the text mainly abut?
    A. What activities lead t well-being.
    B. What can be dne t reduce stress.
    C. Hw we can make ur minds quiet.
    D. Hw mental quietness leads t well-being.
    30. Hw can we determine hw much pleasure an activity can give us?
    A. By judging hw much stress it can increase.
    B. By judging whether it takes place uncnsciusly.
    C. By judging t what extent it can quiet ur minds.
    D. By judging whether it assciates with well-being.
    31. What des the authr intend t highlight in the last paragraph?
    A. Creating a quiet mind fr all time.
    B. Living a peaceful life permanently.
    C. Being in harmny with inner quietness.

B 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据第二段的“But frm time t time, we all experience mments when ur thught-chatter quiets dwn, r even disappears altgether. In these mments, we experience a sense f great well-being. We feel a sense f inner harmny. We feel as if we’re free f prblems, and feel satisfied with ur lives as they are. (但时不时地,我们都会经历这样的时刻:我们的“思想闲聊”安静下来,甚至完全消失。在这些时刻,我们体验到一种巨大的幸福感。我们感受到内心的和谐。我们觉得好像没有问题了,对我们的生活感到满意。)”可知,“思想闲聊”停下来时人们会感到快乐,因此它的发生有时可能会令人不愉快。故选B。
    【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的“Fr example, think abut what happens when yu-g walking in the cuntryside. Yu might feel stressed when yu start ut, but slwly, after-a cuple f miles, yur mind begins t settle dwn. The beauty and stillness f nature attracts yur attentin and yu’re n lnger in yur thught-chatter. By the end f the walk yu feel almst like a different persn. Yu feel mre alive, and much happier—largely because yur mind is nw quiet.
根据倒数第二段的“Our estimate f hw enjyable an activity is may depend n its mind-stpping capacity. In ther wrds, the very best perfrmances—and the mst rewarding activities—are thse which are s attractive and intense that they can cmpletely stp ur minds. (我们对一项活动有多愉快的估计可能取决于它让人停止思考的能力。换句话说,最好的表现和最有回报的活动是那些非常有吸引力和激烈的,它们可以完全停止我们的思想。)”可知,那些可以完全让我们停止思考的活动被认为是非常愉快和有益的,因此,我们对一项活动的享受取决于它在多大程度上能让我们的头脑平静下来。故选C。
    【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“I’m nt saying that inner quietness is the nly reasn why we enjy these activities.
