This is significant cnsidering hw wide Brazil's racial wealth gap is, even as fficials hav e dwnplayed the existence f racism(种族歧视) in their sciety. The average incme fr whit

In her 20s, Barbsa, wh was always excited by everything frm Spike Lee’ s films t the
Black Panthers’ activism, created the Feira Preta Festival, bth t help pay the bills and t cel
ebrate Black culture. The first event shwcased music, plays, and literature and drew mre th

Which isn't t say it hasn't had challenges. Funding has been an issue. A white neighbr

200,000visitrs ver the years and has turned int ne f the largest Black culture events in L

Later she grew the Feira Preta Festival int an initiative, the PretaHub platfrm. Over the
last tw decades, it has wrked with mre than 10,000 Black business peple in many fields.

The scene is ne many f us have smewhere in ur family histry: Dzens f peple celebrating Th

ncles, great-aunts. “It was the mst beautiful place yu' ve ever seen in yur life,” says ne, remembering
    his first day in America.
This particular family is the ne shwn in Barry Levinsn's 1990 film, Avaln, based n his wn childh
d in Baltimre. “In my childhd,” Levinsn tld me, “yu’ d gather arund the grandparents and they w

This is the stry f ur times— the stry f the family, nce a dense grup f many siblings and exten
ded relatives, fragmenting(分裂) int ever smaller and mre fragile frms. The initial result f that fragment
atin, the nuclear family, didn't seem s bad. But then, because the nuclear family is s brittle, the fragmen
tatin cntinued. In many sectrs f sciety, nuclear families fragmented int single-parent families, single-

Althugh the far-reaching cnsequences are dramatic, we dn't talk abut family enugh. It feels t

breaking int pieces in slw mtin fr decades, and many f ur ther prblems— with educatin, ment

w under the l ving gaze f a dzen pairs f eyes, and be caught, when they fall, by a dzen pairs f arms.
Fr decades we have been eating at smaller and smaller tables, with fewer and fewer relatives.
It's time t find ways t bring back the big tables.

A new NASA-led study has fund that hw rain falls in a given year is nearly as imp
rtant t the wrld's vegetatin (植物) as hw much. Reprting n Dec. 11 in Nature, th
e researchers shwed that even in years with similar rainfall ttals, plants grew different
ly when that water came in fewer, bigger bursts.
Scientists have previusly estimated that almst half f the wrld's vegetatin is dri
ven primarily by hw much rain falls in a year. Less well understd is the rle f day-t
-day variability, said lead authr Andrew Feldman, an ecsystem scientist at NASA's G
    ddard SpaceFlight Center.
The team analyzed tw decades f field and satellite bservatins spanning diverse
landscapes frm Siberia t the suthern tip f Patagnia. They fund that plants acrss
42% fEarth's vegetated land surface were sensitive t daily rainfall variability. Of thse,
a little ver half grew better in years with fewer but mre intense wet days. These includ
e drier landscapes like grasslands, crplands and deserts. In cntrast, bradleaf frests
and rainfrests in lwer and middle latitudes(纬度) tended t grew wrse under thse c
nditins, pssibly because they culd nt tlerate the lnger dry perids. Statistically, da
ily rainfall variability was nearly as imprtant as annual rainfall ttals in driving grwth w
    rldwide.
The new study relied primarily n a suite f NASA missins and datasets, which pr
vides rain and snwfall rates fr mst f the planet every 30 minutes using a netwrk f i
nternatinal satellites. T measure plant respnse day t day, the researchers calculate
d hw green an area appeared in satellite imagery. “Greenness” is cmmnly used t es
timate vegetatin density and health. They als tracked a faint reddish light that plants gi
ve ff during phtsynthesis(光合作用), when a plant absrbs sunlight t transfrm carb
n dixide and water int fd. This faint light is an bvius sign f flurishing vegetatin.
Feldman said the findings highlight the vital rle that plants play in mving carbn a
rundEarth——a prcess called the carbn cycle. “A finer understanding f hw plants t
hrive r decline day t day, strm by strm, culd help us better understand their rle in
    that critical cycle,”Feldman said.
    32. What is the main fcus f the NASA-led study in the article?
    A. The glbal distributin f rainfall in a given year.
    B. The rle f satellites in mnitring rainfall and vegetatin.
    C. The impact f daily rainfall variability n vegetatin grwth.
    D. The relatinship between rainfall ttals and vegetatin grwth.
    33. What is the relatinship between rainfall variability and plant grwth?
    A. All types f vegetatin respnd similarly t rainfall patterns.
    B. Lwer latitudes rainfrests grew better after lnger dry perids.
    C. Drier landscapes benefit frm fewer but mre intense rain events.
    D. Rainfall variability shws a relatively weaker influence n plant grwth.
    34. Which methd did researchers use t measure plant respnses t rainfall variability?
    A. Cnducting field experiments in specific lcatins.
    B. Mnitring rainfall ttals using a netwrk f satellites.
    C. Measuring the amunt f carbn dixide absrbed by plants.

    D. Analyzing satellite imagery fr vegetatin density and health.
    35. What is Feldman's attitude tward the findings f this study?
    A. Cautius. B. Psitive. C. Skeptical. D. Neutral.
