The histry f the jungle gym (攀爬架) is full f interesting and unexpected turns that tuch n child develpment theries and theretical math.
Charles Hintn was a Princetn mathematician wh explred the furth dimentin. While living in Japan, he struggled t help his students fully grasp the cncept and therized that since we mstly walk in straight lines, and dn’t use the three-dimensinal space, it’s hard t make the mental leap t the furth dimensin.
His slutin was t train his wn kids. Hintn built a series f layered bamb blcks and labeled the bamb in all three directins, and at each pint, he put X, Y, Z crdinates (坐标) t shw specific lcatins. Then he attempted t turn them int a game. “He wuld say, ‘X2, Y4, Z3 — g! And all the kids wuld race each ther twards the crrect crdinate,’” says Fannin, a Ph. D.candidate at Dartmuth Cllege.
Years later, Hintn’s sn Sebastian wuld recall hw much fun it was t climb and swing n them. By nw it was the early 1920s, and the junir Hintn had mved t Winnetka which at this time was a htbed fr prgressive educatin. He dreamed f recreating the bamb climbing structure f his yuth — minus the nt very fun math games — and he started describing his plans at a dinner party ne night.
As Hintn was describing it, the dinner party was packed with educatrs. One principal’s eyes widened befre telling Hintn, “We need t build this in the schls!”
Sn after, Hintn began filing his early patents fr the design, which he registered t smething he called JungleGym Inc.
If that dinner party had taken place anywhere else in the wrld, this famus piece f equipment may never have existed.
4.Why did Charles Hintn build the bamb structure fr his children?
A.T help them acquire a sense f directin.B.T train the ability t slve tugh prblems.
C.T impress them with a new utdr game.D.T prmte the understanding f the 3D space.
5.Hw did the principal react t Hintn’s descriptin f the climbing structure?

Hadeda ibises, knwn as “African alarm clcks” fr their lud calls, have lng legs and thin beaks (鸟喙) and shiny feathers n their wings. Histrically restricted t nrtheastern Suth Africa, hadedas have significantly expanded their range t many urban areas.
Varius ibises use remte-tuch t detect mvements f prey (猎物) in the sil and lcate their hidden place. This ability is facilitated by a sensry rgan in their beaks, called the bill-tip rgan, which develped during the time f the dinsaurs. My recent research cnfirmed that hadedas have this“sixth sense” and fund it is clsely tied t sil misture (湿度) levels.
We cnducted sensry tests with hadedas in bird cages. We presented them with bxes f sil cntaining buried wrms (虫), masking any sunds with white nise and mixing dead wrms int the sil t remve scent cues (气味线索). The birds cnsistently fund live wrms faster than dead nes, indicating they are able t sense mvements f prey and use remte-tuch t find them.
Further testing revealed that hadedas fund wrms mre quickly in wetter sils. If the sil was t dry, they lst this ability and had t rely n randm searching. These findings suggest that the hadedas’ expansin in SuthAfrica is related t increased artificial watering systems. They require wet sil t use remte-tuch effectively, which culd explain their absence in dry regins. Drughts and heatwaves, expected t wrsen with climate change, culd threaten their ppulatin by making prey detectin mre challenging.
The study highlights the brader implicatins fr ther remte-tuch hunting birds, many f which are already endangered. As sil misture levels decrease, these birds culd becme mre at risk, stressing the imprtance f cnsidering sensry requirements in cnservatin effrts.
8.What d we knw abut hadeda ibises?
A.They are knwn fr shiny feathers.B.They barely see any rise in numbers.
C.They recall images f the dinsaurs.D.They have a specialized sensry rgan.
9.Why were white nise and dead wrms used in the experiment?
A.T get a mre reliable result.B.T add experimental items.
C.T cpy natural habitats.D.T avid disturbing the subjects.
10.What des the research suggest abut the impact f climate change n hadedas?
A.Climate change will decrease their reliance n sil misture.
B.Drughts culd make it mre difficult fr them t find prey.
C.Increased rainfall will help them relcate t urbanized areas.
D.Rising temperatures culd increase their feeding efficiency.
11.What des the text mainly talk abut?
A.The specialty f hadedas’ rgans.B.The masters f dry land hunting.
C.Hadedas’ prey detectin in wet sil.D.Hadedas ibises’ urban expansin.
If yu culd take a pill t “cure” yur lneliness, wuld yu take it? The “lneliness epidemic (流行病)” has been widely reprted and cmmented upn acrss the wrld in recent years, affecting yung and ld. There have even been numerus urgent calls by gvernments t address it. Hwever, sme researchers questin whether we really have the credible data t back up such claims. Shuld we struggle t eradicate it, as we wuld a virus r a disease?
Psychlgist James Hillman had cncerns abut viewing lneliness as a pathlgy (病理学). He nted that slutins like scializing in recvery grups suggest we shuld get rid f lneliness. But Hillman argued that if lneliness is a natural part f us, it will naturally cme and g thrughut ur lives, regardless f ur effrts t avid it.
I have spent much f my career researching lneliness, cnducting hundreds f interviews and bserving its many versins acrss all ages. My findings suggest that lneliness is nt a single feeling but a label fr a range f human experiences and unmet needs related t discnnectin, which may be inevitable at times. In my bk All the Lnely Peple: Cnversatins n Lneliness, I present varius examples f lneliness, drawn frm numerus prjects and interviews, each ffering a glimpse int different aspects f this cnditin.
Stries help us identify what lneliness lks like and hw it is lived. They als shw that lneliness is part f mst peple’ s life jurneys. Accepting this reality may be mre sensible than pathlgizing it, which can create shame and frce peple t hide their lneliness.
This is nt t ignre lneliness, which is challenging and difficult. But stries allw us t share ur lneliness, unburden urselves, and cnnect with thers. The suffering in lneliness ften riginates frm being alne with it. Ultimately, the answer t lneliness may lie in learning t live alngside it, rather than denying its existence r trying t rt it ut.

14.What is the main purpse f the authr sharing “stries”?
A.T infrm hw lneliness varies with age.B.T emphasize the imprtance f strytelling.
C.T shw cmplexities f human lneliness.D.T express his sympathy fr the suffering.
15.What is the authr’s suggestin fr the issue f lneliness?
A.Overcme it by staying busy.B.Engage with scial activities.
C.Cexist peacefully with it.D.Turn t experts fr guidance.

根据划线词上文“If yu culd take a pill t “cure” yur lneliness, wuld yu take it?(如果你能吃一颗药丸来“治愈”你的孤独,你会吃吗?)” 故选A。
根据第三段“I have spent much f my career researching lneliness, cnducting hundreds f interviews and bserving its many versins acrss all ages.
根据第四段“Stries help us identify what lneliness lks like and hw it is lived. They als shw that lneliness is part f mst peple’ s life jurneys. Accepting this reality may be mre sensible than pathlgizing it, which can create shame and frce peple t hide their lneliness.
根据最后一段中“Ultimately, the answer t lneliness may lie in learning t live alngside it, rather than denying its existence r trying t rt it ut.

16.空前“What’s the secret t writing the best stry f yur life? It starts with characterizatin.(写出人生中最好的故事的秘诀是什么?
18.前文“Yur characters als need self-mtivatin and faults t be believable. They wn’t feel reliable if they’re nly mving as agents f the plt, and the stry wn’t either. N human can see themselves as perfect and faultless.(你的角色也需要自我激励和错误才能让人相信。
19.根据后文“S, yu can develp yur characters further thrughut the rest f yur stry. Make sure yu dcument hw yur characters grw. Otherwise, they becme bund by the plt and lse their relatability.(所以,你可以在接下来的故事中进一步发展你的角色。
20.根据本段内容“Describe the central cnflict frm her’s and ppnent’s view. A deep understanding f bth sides is vital t creating balance in yur stry. Bth characters have mtivatins, desires, and fears, making the cnflict richer and mre engaging. It prevents any character frm falling int steretypes(刻板印象).(从英雄和对手的角度描述中心冲突。
