Chinese researchers have revealed the anti-cancer characteristic f neutrphils (中性粒细胞) — a type f white bld cells—and the related mlecular regulatin mechanism, prviding new insights int cancer diagnsis and treatment. The discvery, made by researchers at the Shanghai Institute f Immunity and Infectin under the Chinese Academy f Sciences and Fudan University, was published in Cell n Tuesday.
Neutrphils are the mst abundant white bld cells in the human bdy. As the first line f defence against infectins, they play a key rle in anti-infectin immunity. The researchers cllected neutrphils frm 143 patients with 17 different types f cancer and analyzed them. They revealed that neutrphils can adpt at least 10 highly specialized and distinct functinal states related t inflammatin (炎症) , bld vessel frmatin and—mst excitingly—presenting antigens (抗体) t activate pwerful cancer-killing T cells.
“We were surprised t find such cmplexity and different rles within neutrphils, which have been ignred fr s lng,” said Zhang Xiaming, a researcher at the Institute. “What is especially remarkable is their newly discvered capacity t act as antigen-presenting cells, gathering T cells against cancer. In additin, the abundance f antigen-presenting neutrphils is assciated with imprved cnditin acrss many cancer types revealed in this study,” he said.
“This cmpletely changes hw we perceive neutrphils in the cntext f cancer,” said Ga Qiang, a prfessr at Fudan University. “Nw we knw we culd emply the diverse hidden identities f neutrphils t strengthen the effectiveness f immuntherapy (免疫疗法). We’re thrilled t further explre the ptential benefits f these newly uncvered mechanisms in clines.”
The study emphasizes the value f single-cell sequencing appraches t reveal new functinal dimensin even within seemingly well-understd immune cells. Tapping int the hidden ptential f neutrphils may prvide new insights int cancer diagnsis and treatment.

Flexible, wearable electrnics are making their way int everyday use, and their full ptential is still t be realized. Sn, this technlgy culd be used fr precisin medical sensrs attached t the skin, designed t perfrm health mnitring and disease detectin. It wuld be like having a high-tech medical center at yur service. Wrn rutinely, future wearable electrnics culd ptentially detect pssible emerging health prblems — such as heart disease, cancer-even befre bvius signs appear. The device culd als d a persnalized analysis f the tracked health data while minimizing the need fr its wireless transmissin (传输).
Such a skin-like device is being develped in a prject. Leading the prject is Sihng Wang, assistant prfessr at the University f Chicag. This device wuld need t cllect and prcess a vast amunt f data, well abve what even the best smartwatches can d tday, and it wuld have t deal with this data speedily with very lw pwer cnsumptin in a very tiny space. T address that need, the team called upn neurmrphic cmputing (神经形态计算). This AI technlgy cpies peratin f the brain by training n past data sets and learning frm experience.
