Tw things changed my life: my mther and a white plastic bike basket. I have thught lng and hard abut it and it's true, I wuld be different if my mm hadn't turned a silly bicycle accessry int a life lessn that I carry with me tday.
My parents were united in their way f raising children, but it mstly fell t my mther t actually carry it .ut, Lking back, I hnestly dn't knw hw she did it, Managing the family budget must have been hard, but she made it lk effrtless, If we cmplained, we'd hear smething like, “I dn’t care what s-and-s gt fr his birthday, yu are nt getting a TV in yur rm, a car fr yur birthday r a lavish sweet-16 party,” We had t earn ur allwance by ding chres arund the huse. I can still remember hw lng it tk t plish the legs f ur cffee table, Vy brthers can n dubt remember hurs spent cleaning the huse. Like the tw little girls grwing up at the While Huse, we made ur wn beds (n ne left the huse until that was dne) and picked up after urselves. We had t keep track f ur belngings, and if smething was lst, it was nt replaced.
It was summer and, ne day, my mther drve me t the bike shp t get a tire fixed --and there it was in the windw, White, shiny, plastic and decrated with flwers, the basket winked at me and I knew--I knew—I had t have it.
“It’g beautiful,” my mther said, “What a neat basket.”
I tried t hld ff at first, I played it cl fr a shrt while. But then I guess I culdn't stand it any lnger,” Mm, please can I please, please get it? I'll d what yu say, but I need that basket, I lve that basket. Please, Mm. Please?”
I was desperate.
“Yu knw,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we bth stared at what l believed was the clest thing ever,” If yu save up yu culd buy this yurself.”
“By the time I make enugh it'll be gne!”
“There might be anther way.” And s ur paying plan unflded. My mther bught the beautiful basket and put it safely in sme hiding place I culdn't find. Each week I eagerly cunted my grwing savings increased by extra wrk here and there (washing the car, helping my mther make dinner, delivering r cllecting things n my bike that already lked naked withut the basket in frnt). And then, weeks later, I cunted, recunted and jumped fr jy, Oh, happy day! I made it! I finally had the exact amunt we'd agreed
Days later the unthinkable happened, A neighbrhd girl I'd played with millins f times appeared with the exact same basket fixed t her shiny; new bike that already had all the bells and whistles, I rde hard and fast hme t tell my mther abut this disaster. This hrrible turn f events.
And then came the lessn I've taken with me thrugh my life: “Hney, yur basket is extra-special,” m said, gently wiping away my ht tears. "Yur basket is special because yu paid fr it yurself.”

During a judging perid fr a recent shrt stry cntest, I started thinking a lt abut dialgue tags. Because in many submissins characters didn't “say” a thing. They shuted, they injured, they assumed. Sme characters screamed while thers murmured, But n ne “said” anything. And I started wndering why.
Why d we tell beginner writers t avid creative dialgue tags in the first place? Why d we insist that characters shuld stick t “said,” “asked,” and the ccasinal “sighed?” And, if the advice is s ft-repealed, why are writers still unable t resist the siren call f weep, scream snap, r laugh?
The mre I thught abut it, the mre I understd the temptatin. We're always encuraged t use strng, actinable verbs in ur prse, Why walk when yu can skip r wander? Why cry when yu can sb r weep? Why wuldn't we reach fr exciting verbs instead f mild bring dull-blah said? Why culdn't each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its wn right?
The prblem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting t becme smething mre than the sum f its parts. Withut smething t prvide structure, a cllectin f the wrld's mst glrius diamnds wuld still nly amunt t a heap f rcks.
And a dialgue tag shuld never, ever be the diamnd in any given sentence.
Dialgue is yur diamnd, friends. When we read yur wrk, yur dialgue shuld be s bright, s sparkling, s lifelike, s wnderfully realistic that ur brains “hear” each line instead f merely reading it, We dn’t need t be tld a character is shuting--we can sense il in the way they spit ut wrds, clench fists, r strm frm the rm.
A dialgue tag is a mere signpst alng the narrative jurney, gently indicating wh said what. It's part f a stry's experience, but it's nt part f the stry itself, nr shuld it be treated as such, Dialgue tags are similar t lighting in a Bradway play: withut it. the audience wuld have n idea what was ging n, but it usually strives t shine withut calling t much attentin t itself. What's mre, readers may nt initially imagine a particular line being “sbbed.” When we reach the end f a sentence and find ut ur leading lady has actually sbbed instead f whispered.it pulls us right ut f the stry. We pause. We reread the line. We adjust ur understanding and begin again. But that wnderful mmentum when we're fully immersed in the scene, hlding ur breath t find ut what ur herine says next, is lst.
Creating a successful wrk f fictin is abut giving the render all the materials they need t build yur fictinal wrld in their mind and nt a scrap mre. Readers need believable dialgue. They need vices s cmpelling that they pp right ff the page and int ur cars. And if yu've created dynamic characters wh speak wrds we can really hear yu will never need t tell us hw smething was said.

Renewable energy nly accunts fr 1l percent f energy cnsumptin in the U.S., accrding t the Energy Infrmatin Administratin, Fssil fuels and nuclear energy generate mre than 8(percent f the cuntry's electricity, and that's unlikely t change: like ther clean energy surces, anaerbic digestin is still mre expensive than traditinal surces f cncrgy.

Math and literature are prbably tw f the subjects that bring students headaches. Hwever, scientists wnder 56 the beauty f math can be fund in literary wrks. Once Upn a Prime; The Wndrus Cnnectins between Mathematics and Literature, a bk 57 (publish) recently by UK mathematician Sarah Hart, presents sme interesting thughts abut “three”. She argues that the beauty f this number is indeed evident in many wrks f western literature and languages in general.
“Three” is the minimum number 58 which a tw-dimensinal shape can be defined. Fr example, three sticks can create a triangle, a stable structure. Many cmmn phrases are in three wrds, such as “ready, set, g”, in stries, there are usually three main characters, such as Harry, Rn and Hermine in the Harry Ptter series. Fr a series f nvels, there are usually three bks rather than fur, accrding t Hart.
Why is it always the third sn wh 59 (behave) differently frm his tw lder brthers, thus 60 (win)the princess? “The reasn fr this,” Hart explains, “is bvius. We require tw 61 (repeat) t get t knw the pattern, s that the breaking f the pattern in the third tw character can surprise r amuse us.
Similarly, anther study by researchers at the University f Vermnt als cnnected math and strytelling. They analyzed mre than 1,300 fictin bks and arranged fr 10, 000 wrds frm the bks 62 (rate) by 50 participants n a happiness scale f 1 t 9. Then the ratings 63 (categrize) int different graphs, which shwed hw the readers' emtins changed while reading. It turned ut that each stry fit 64 (perfect)int ne f six basic graphs, a mathematical pattern.
“The idea 65 ne wuld have t chse between mathematics and literature is smething f a tragedy,” Hart says, “The tw fields are fundamentally linked”.

BEFORE
6th century BCE The Greek thinker Thales f Miletus ntes magnetic rcks, r ldestnes(然磁石).
1st century CE Chinese diviners make primitive cmpasses with irn spn that can turn arund t pint suth.
1269 French schlar Pierre de Maricurt sets ut the basic laws f magnetic attractin, repulsin, and ples.
AFTER
1824FrenchmathematicianSimén Pissn mdels the frces in a magnetic field.
1940s American physicist Walter Maurice Elsasser attributes Earth's magnetic field 1 irn swirling in its uter cre as the planet rtates.
1958 Explrer l space missin shws Earth's magnetic field extending far ut int space.
By the late 1500s,ships’ captains already relied n magnetic cmpasses t maintain their curse acrss the ceans. Yet n ne knew hw they wrked. Sme thught the cmpass needle was attracted t the Nrth Star, thers that it was drawn t magnetic muntains in the Arctic. It was English physician William Gilbert wh discvered that Earth itself is magnetic.
Strnger reasns are btained frm sure experiments frm prbable and demnstrated arguments than cnjectures(推测)and the pinins f philsphical speculatrs.
William Gilbert
Gilbert's breakthrugh came nt frm a flash f inspiratin, but frm 17 years f careful experiments. He learned all he culd frm ships, captains and cmpass makers, and then he made a mdel glbe, r "terrella" ut f the magnetic rck ldestne and tested cmpass needles against it. The needles reacted arund the terrella just as ships, cmpasses did n a larger scale-shwing the same patterns f declinatin (pinting slightly away frm true nrth at the gegraphic ple, which differs frm magnetic nrth) and inclinatin (tilting dwn frm the hrizntal tward the glbe).
Gilbert cncluded, rightly, that the entire planet is a magnet and has a cre f irn, He published his ideas in the bk DeMagnete (On the Magnet) in 1600, causing sensatin, Jhannes Kepler and Galile, in particular, were inspired by his suggestin that Earth is nt fixed t rtating celestial spheres, as mst peple still thught but is made t spin by the invisible frce f its wn magnetism.
