Ice cream has held a unique rle in ur wrld's histry and culture —— but where did it cme frm?
The first accunts f cld desserts and iced drinks date back t as early as the first century. In civilizatins including ancient Rme, Mughal India, and Tang dynasty China, these icy treats were mainly enjyed by
the ryal families. And finding the means t freeze these desserts wasn't always easy. Wealthy Mediterranean nbility (地中海贵族) sent labrers t climb up high muntains t harvest glacial ice and snw.
Yet the cream-based treat we knw tday made a much later first shwing. It was riginally inspired by sherbet (果汁冰糕), r sharbat in Arabic, an icy drink believed t have riginated in Persia(波斯), and later
gained ppularity in the Middle Ages. Eurpean travelers brught sharbat recipes hme, and began creating their wn chclate, nut, and even eggplant flavred taste n the refreshment. In 1692, Antni Latini, an Italian chef, recrded a recipe fr a unique milk-based versin, which sme histrians call the first ice cream.
In the 18th century, ice cream expanded its reach as these recipes set sail alngside Eurpean settlers t Nrth America. Yet it was still mainly enjyed by the upper classes as the prcess t make it was quite labrius, and its main ingredients (原料) —— sugar, salt and cream —— were expensive. In Philadelphia in 1843, Nancy Jhnsn patented a revlutinary ice cream-making machine, which made the prcess easier fr any
hme ck. And string ice cream was n lnger hard, as by the mid-1830s, New England businessman“Ice King” Frederic Tudr had greatly imprved the ice trade, shipping thusands f tns f ice t husehlds acrss the glbe. Sn, ice cream was n every street crner.
Tday, ice cream cntinues t take n new frms. And while sme f its mysteries may never be slved, ne thing is certain: ur lve fr ice cream will never lessen.

Overfunctining behavirs, such as verwrking, verachieving, verthinking, verexplaining, vergiving r vercmmitting, are quite cmmn in ur life and wrk.
Why d we ften engage in verfunctining behavirs? The reasn is that we want t create psychlgical safety fr urselves. Overfunctining behavirs are a frm f nervus-system regulatin. When yu

T restre balance, yu engage in verfunctining behavirs t stay“relevant” r“n tp” s that yu can alleviate yur fear. The cnventinal wisdm is that“trying t be the best” is a frm f resilience that makes us mre prductive.
Hwever, recent researches suggest therwise. A 2018 meta-analysis f 25,000 peple, cnducted by Dana Harari and his clleagues and published in the Jurnal f Applied Psychlgy, fund n relatinship
between actual perfrmance and the perfectinism typical f success. Take verthinking fr example: If verthinking wrked, it wuld allw us t slve mre prblems in ur lives. But the research shws the ppsite is true. Overthinking is linked t prer decisin-making, greater interpersnal prblems and mre distress. In ther wrds, cnstant effrts dn't make yu the best perfrmer. A 2021 study by a team f Chinese
researchers fund that perfectinism was related t greater anxiety and depressin. A 2023 study reprted that verachievers had higher levels f dpamine (多巴胺), a neurtransmitter(神经递质) related t bth
mtivatin and addictin. The brain can create pwerful cravings that perpetuate(使持久) ur verfunctining —— the mre yu verfunctin, the mre yu want t verfunctin. Cnstant verfunctining des greatharm t ur mental and physical health.
T break the trap f verfunctining, it's vital t see that they are just frms f safety-seeking. We
need t recgnize that the mst pwerful determiner f ur wn safety is n ne but urselves. When ur brains drive us t verd smething next time, just allw yurself nt t be perfect and relax fr a while.
28. What's the main reasn fr peple t verfunctin accrding t the text?
A. T shw ff their abilities. B. T gain mre recgnitin frm thers.

29. What des the underline wrd“alleviate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Ease. B. Return. C. Reprduce. D. Enhance.
30. What can we learn frm paragraph 3?

B. There is a psitive relatinship between perfectinism and perfrmance.
C. Peple with perfectinism are mre likely t succeed in their careers.
D. Struggling fr perfectin frequently desn't bring the best results.
31. What is the best title fr the text?

W: In 2022, I scred my dream jb at a travel magazine based in Bangkk. I mved there with my husband, Leigh, frm my hmetwn Brightn, a seaside city in the United Kingdm.
Our Brightn life had becme rutine and we wanted a change f scenery — an escape frm ffice jbs, t eat ur way thrugh Asia and tell stries alng the way. Thrugh wrk, my“ffices” ranged frm muntain cttages in nrthern Vietnam t tents in the jungles f Las r diverse lcal villages in China. Besides my day-t-day wrk, Leigh and I launched a travel blg called Strange Talk, where we published the stries that magazines were nt interested in. Our blg led us t incredible adventures, but apart frm ur blg readers, we had n ne else t talk abut ur clurful life in Bangkk with. It was difficult t make friends in Thailand. I had a few Thai friends frm wrk wh I wuld have lunch with at the lcal market, but it was hard t break the cultural barrier. Withut speaking the same language as them, I culd never be in their inner circle.
Leigh and I realized we were lnely. Even thugh we have each ther, we need the benefits f a well-runded friendship grup. Therefre, we made the decisin t pack ur things and mve back t Brightn.
