Animals have an internal clck that regulates their bdy prcesses in a 24-hur cycle but expsure t mismatched envirnments can disturb this rhythm. A research team at the University f Stirling, led by PhD student Kristine Gandia, studied giant pandas t understand such disturbances.
“The seasnal lifestyle makes a panda a gd mdel fr us,” says Gandia, “which has resulted in behaviral case studies acrss varius lcatins, ffering insights int animal habits and zlgy.” Besides, pandas are usually fund in a latitudinal range f 26 t 42 degrees nrth, which can be mirrred in the suthern hemisphere (半球) with similar cnditins essential fr life.
The research team cnducted a cmprehensive study n 11 giant pandas that were hused in six different zs scattered acrss varius parts f the wrld. Sme zs were within the giant pandas’ native ranges while the thers were far away.
“Our team dcumented the behavirs f the subjects, aiming t identify and categrize indicating actins f their well-being. These indicatrs were divided int three categries: psitive, neutral, and negative. Psitive behavirs are cmprised f activities which are generally seen as signs f delight and cntent. Neutral behavirs included daily rutines fr basic survival. And negative behavirs were identified as repeated mvements in a shrt time, which deviated (偏离) frm the nrm and culd suggest stress r discmfrt,” Gandia elabrated.
The research results suggested that wild creatures might be experiencing “jet lag” when they are hused in distant zs. Similar t humans’ jet lag, it ccurs when the internal bilgical clcks f the pandas d nt keep pace with the envirnmental cnditins f their new surrundings. This mismatch can lead t a variety f side effects n their verall fitness and behavir. Gandia’s bservatins highlight the imprtance f cnsidering the natural habitats and bilgical rhythms f animals when planning a z, t. “S maybe smene else is t blame fr the dark circles arund the pandas’ eyes, nt the little cuties themselves,” Gandia jked.

Demanding days seem designed t test ur self-cntrl. We all need t rely n willpwer t avid temptatins and verride unwanted thughts r impulses. The ppular psychlgical thery prpsed that willpwer resembled a kind f battery. With each exercise f self-cntrl, yu exhausted this resurce. Withut a chance t recharge, that resurce ran lw, making it harder t maintain self-cntrl. This prcess was knwn as “eg depletin”.
Hwever, psychlgist Vernika Jb published a study that questined “eg depletin”, shwing it depended n peple’s underlying beliefs. Jb divided participants int tw types: thse with a “limited” view f willpwer and thse with a “nn-limited” view, based n a prir questinnaire. She then gave the participants labratry tests examining mental fcus, which was cnsidered t depend n the reserves f willpwer. The study fund peple with a limited mindset tended t perfrm exactly as “eg depletin” wuld predict but nn-limited individuals did nt. Thse wh believed willpwer was easily depleted saw their self-cntrl decrease, while thse believing in “mental stamina (耐力)” experienced n eg depletin.
Subsequent debates abut the reliability f the labratry tests emerged, but Jb’s wrk demnstrated mindsets significantly impacted real-life utcmes. Her fllw-up study revealed that after cmpleting demanding tasks, mst participants recvered t sme degree vernight. Thse with nn-limited mindsets actually experienced an increase in prductivity the fllwing day, as if energized by the extra pressure.
If yu already have a nn-limited mindset, these findings might ffer self-satisfactin. Fr thse with limited mindsets, hpe is nt lst. Learning abut this science can help shift beliefs. Sharing this knwledge with thers can further cnslidate this shift. Mrever, recllecting times f engaging in tiring yet enjyable tasks naturally shifts peple’s beliefs tward nn-limited mindsets, as they see prf f their mental stamina. T prvide yurself with further evidence, yu can cnduct small self-cntrl tests. As yu realize yur willpwer’s grwth, yu’ll find resisting temptatins and distractins easier.
While immediate miracles aren’t guaranteed, perseverance will lead t a changed mindset and increased self-cntrl, advancing actins tward persnal gals.
32. What can we learn frm Jb’s studies?
A. Willpwer is a fixed trait that cannt be changed.
B. Mindsets greatly impact ne’s self-cntrl abilities.
C. Eg depletin changes peple’s underlying beliefs.
D. Demanding tasks negatively influence mental fcus.
33. What des the underlined wrd “cnslidate” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Represent. B. Strengthen.C. Detect.D. Relieve.
34. What des the authr suggest fr thse with limited mindsets?
A. Engaging in effrtless and pleasant tasks.
B. Aviding impulses and extra pressure.
C. Learning abut the science t shift their beliefs.
D. Fcusing n external rewards t seek self-satisfactin.
35. Which f the fllwing is a natural cnsequence f realizing ne’s willpwer’s grwth?
A. A grwing desire t pursue instant miracles.
B. A sharp increase in self-cntrl tests cnducted.
C. Crying need t seek prf f ne’s mental stamina.
D. Better ability t resist temptatins and distractins.
