Life fr these wrkers was hard. “We can see that in their skeletns,” says Azza Mhamed Sarry El-Din, a scientist wh has been studying the bdies that were fund in the cemetery. The bnes shw signs f arthritis (关节炎), which prbably develped as a result f having t carry heavy things fr a lng time. Archelgists have als fund many female skeletns in the cemetery. The damage t their bnes is similar t that f the men. Their lives may have been even tugher. Male wrkers wuld n average live t be between the ages f 40 and 45, but wmen wuld nly live t be between the ages f 30 and 35. Why can’t yu remember being a baby? Will that trip t Dreamwrld be wasted n yur tddler (学步的幼儿)? Scientists explain hw the brain changes frm infancy (婴儿期) thrugh t early childhd, and what this means fr yur child’s memries.
While sme peple can remember memries frm as early as age tw, as adults mst f us rarely remember things that happen t us befre the age f three, due t a phenmenn called “infantile amnesia (婴儿健忘症)”. Generally, we tend t have vague (模糊的) memries f events that ccur between the ages f three and seven.
S why is it that we can’t remember being a baby, r a tddler? The answer lies in the way that ur brain’s ability t stre memries changes as we grw. At birth, a baby’s brain is nly a quarter f its adult size, grwing t three-quarters the size f an adult brain by age tw. This increase crrelates with a grwth in the number f brain cells—called neurns (神经元)一and the cnnectins between these cells.
A part f the brain that is imprtant in frming memries is the hippcampus (海马体), says Dr Dhanisha Jhaveri, a researcher at the Queensland Brain Institute at The University f Queensland. “In the hippcampus, new neurns are cnstantly being created. In adulthd, new cells are still being prduced, but the rate f prductin in the hippcampus slws dwn,” says Dr Jhaveri.
Neurscientists believe that the rapid rate at which brain cells are being prduced in childhd culd be the cause f infantile amnesia. Because s many new neurns are being prduced and frm cnnectins with each ther in memry circuits (记忆电路), they might disturb existing netwrks f memries that have already frmed.
But it turns ut that a child’s ability t remember things fr lng perids f time imprves gradually thrughut childhd. Fr example, in studies in which yung kids were taught t imitate an actin, six-mnth-lds culd remember what t d fr 24 (but nt 48) hurs, while nine-mnth-lds culd remember what t d ne mnth (but nt three mnths) later.
Despite this memry lss, childhd experiences have been fund t influence adult behaviur years later, which suggests that traces f these memries culd be stred smewhere in the brain that isn’t easy t access.
S while yur kids might nt recall their majr milestnes r be t yung t remember a trip t Disneyland, psitive experiences as tddlers r in infancy may cntinue t affect their behaviur lng after they’ve frgtten them.
8.What can be inferred frm paragraph 3?
A.Our brain’s ability t stre memries remains unchanged as we grw.
B.The size f the child’s brain by age tw is twice the size at birth.
C.The grwth in the number f neurns will influence the size f the child’s brain.
D.Neurns have nthing t d with a persn’s memry.
9.What is the cause f infantile amnesia accrding t the neurscientists?
A.The rapid rate f brain cells being prduced.
B.The existing netwrks f memries.
C.The way f ur brain string memries.
D.The memry circuits f ur brain.
10.What is paragraph 6 mainly abut?
A.Childhd experiences will influence adult behaviur years later.
B.Traces f these memries culd be stred smewhere in the brain.
C.A child’s ability t remember things imprves gradually ver time.
D.The yunger a baby is, the better its memry is.
11.What is the authr’s attitude twards the influence f childhd experiences n adult behaviur years later?
A.Subjective.B.Objective.C.Pessimistic.D.Uncaring.

Sprtsmen in the running races f the Olympics are great athletes, but even the slw runners f the running wrld —jggers in the park —have gd health. A study ut this week in the Jurnal f the American Cllege f Cardilgy finds that even 5 t 10 minutes a day f slw running is enugh t extend life by several years, cmpared with nt running at all.

A 2013 study in Denmark suggested that the secret f maximum lngevity is up t 2. 5 hurs f running a week.
Althugh running can make yu less likely t have cardivascular disease, it desn’t entirely take the risk away frm yu. “There is n questin that the healthier yu are and the mre exercise yu d, the lnger yu’ll live and the better yur quality f life will be,” Dr. Baggish says. “But it desn’t mean yu’ll never get sick.”
“Many lng-term runners d nt run because they want t live lnger,” Dr. Baggish ntes. “They run because it makes them feel better every day.”
Fr these runners, the cst f feeling gd can be injuries, s Dr. Baggish supprts the value f what he calls “active rest.” His belief, nt supprted by any recent research, is that it’s a gd idea t spend 25% f exercise time ver the curse f a year running at a slw speed r ding ther activities like swimming r biking.
12.What des the new study mainly shw us?
A.The best way t run.B.The best time t run.
C.The imprtance f running.D.The ppularity f running.
13.What des Dr. Baggish say abut cardivascular disease?
A.It can result frm running ften.B.It’s nt cmpletely preventable.
C.It’s nt s serius as mst peple think.D.It can be treated by sme kind f exercise.
14.What’s Dr. Baggish’s suggestin fr smene ding exercise?
A.Staying active all the time.B.Swimming mre, run less.
C.Having a big rest after ding sprts.D.Taking a little light exercise.
15.In which part f a newspaper can yu mst prbably find this text?
A.Health.B.Business.C.Sciety.D.Medicine.

Every artist knws in his heart that he is saying smething t the public. Nt nly des he want t say it well, but he wants it t be smething that has nt been 21 befre. He hpes the public will listen and understand—he wants t teach them, and he wants them t learn frm him.
