Fr students chasing lasting wealth, the best chice f a cllege majr is less bvius than yu might think. Cnventinal wisdm says cmputer science and engineering majrs have higher earnings than liberal arts graduates. This is true fr the first jb, but the lng-term stry is mre cmplicated.
Cmputer science and engineering majrs aged 23 and 25 earned an average f $61,744, accrding t a recent survey. This was 37 percent higher than the average starting salary f$45,032 earned by histry r the scial sciences majrs. These engineers rughly dubled their starting salaries by age 40, t an average f $124,458. Yet earnings grwth is even faster in ther majrs, and sme catch up cmpletely. By age 40, the average salary f all cllege graduates was $111,870, and scial science and histry majrs earned $131,154— an average that is lifted, in part, by high-paying jbs in management, business and law.
One reasn fr the narrwing gap is that STEM jbs change rapidly, and wrkers must cnstantly learn new skills t keep up. Jb ads fr sftware develpers and engineers were mre likely t ask fr skills that didn't exist a decade earlier. We can als see this by lking at changes in cllege curse catalgs. Machine Learning, ne f the largest curses in the Stanfrd cmputer science department did nt exist until 2003. Tday, it enrlls mre than a thusand students. In cntrast, liberal arts majrs maintain a mre traditinal curriculum with fewer changes.
Why d the earnings f pets catch up? It's nt because petry suddenly pays the bills. Midcareer salaries are highest in management and business ccupatins, fields which liberal arts majrs are mre likely than STEM graduates t enter. A liberal arts educatin builds a set f fundatinal skills, such as written cmmunicatin, prblem-slving, and the ability t wrk in a team, which serve students well in a rapidly changing jb market.
T clarify, I am nt suggesting students aviding STEM majrs. But I d think we shuld be cautius f the impulse t make cllege curriculums verly technical and career-fcused. A fur-year degree shuld prepare students fr the next 40 years f wrking life, and fr a future that nne f us can imagine.
28. What d the figures in Paragraph 2 reveal?
A. Engineers earn less than scial scientists.
B. STEM careers guarantee the highest pay.
C. Liberal arts earnings grw t match STEM.
D. Scial science majrs excel in high-paying fields.
29. What is the reasn fr the narrwing earnings gap?
A. Liberal arts majrs' salaries start higher.
B. STEM wrkers experience skill updates.
C. Liberal arts majrs avid traditinal careers.
D. STEM majrs maintain a traditinal curriculum.
30. What is the authr's view n cllege curriculums?
A. Students shuld avid STEM majrs.
B. Art degrees shuld be career-riented.
C. STEM majrs must fcus n the future.
D. Balance is preferred ver technical fcus.
31. What is the best title fr the passage?
A. Engineers Start Faster, but Pets Catch up
B. Cnstant Skill Updating fr STEM Careers
C. Management and Business: Paths t Wealth
D. Hw t Balance Skills With Lifelng Learning

Engineers at Tufts University have develped an imaging methd that can see details dwn t 1.6 nanmeters(纳米). This new technique, develped by a team led by Prfessr Igr Sklv, ges beynd traditinal labratry micrscpes and even atmic frce micrscpy(AFM), which can nly prduce rugh, black-and-white images that shw atms as surface dts withut“clr” infrmatin n the type f atm r material. By cmbining AFM with physical measurements and machine learning, this new methd prvides a high-reslutin map f the material.
In this methd, the atmic frce micrscpe scans the surface f the sample t identify the type f mlecule(分子) underneath. Fr example, if the material is made f different types f plastics, the technique can create a clr map shwing hw the mlecules are arranged and the tiny details f the structure. The measurements include the shape f the surface, the energy lst as the scanner pulls away, and hw much the material stretches. A ttal f twelve different physical measurements are recrded using AFM. The data is then prcessed by a cmputer prgram that creates a map fr each type f material in the sample.
This imaging technlgy has significant ptential in varius fields. Fr example, it culd speed up the develpment f plastic materials that degrade smthly, layer by layer, helping t prevent micrplastic pllutin, which harms the envirnment and enters the fd chain. Additinally, in healthcare, it culd allw detailed studies f tth surfaces, aiding in the develpment f prtective catings that better resist damage frm virus.
“Imaging at the nanscale can help shift plastic material develpment tward a mre precise apprach,” said Sklv. “Yu mix materials and then test them under cnditins that resemble real use, aging, and envirnmental expsure, mainly bserving large and small changes in the material. By lking at these tiny changes, we can mre quickly predict what might happen t these new materials ver time.”
32. What is the main advantage f the new imaging methd?
A. Prducing rugh, black-and-white images.
B. Offering clear and clred images f materials.
C. Cmbining AFM with physical measurements.
D. Shwing detailed infrmatin n the atm surface.
33. What is the main idea f Paragraph 2?
A. Wrking principle f the technlgy.
B. Generatin f clr images by AFM.
C. Data prcessing thrugh machine learning.
D. Applicatin f the technlgy in material analysis.
34. What des the underlined wrd“degrade” mean?
A. Wear ut. B. Break dwn. C. Hld up. D. Set ff.
35. In what way des nanscale imaging help material develpment?
A. Instant results and cnclusins.
B. Testing under extreme cnditins.
C. Observing small material changes.
D. Faster and mre accurate predictins.

第三段的信息句“One reasn fr the narrwing gap is that STEM jbs change rapidly, and wrkers must cnstantly learn new skills t keep up”指出 STEM行业的工作变化迅速,需要不断更新技能,这使得收入增长放缓,进而缩小了与文科专业毕业生收入之间的差距。
根据第三段信息句“it culd speed up the develpment f plastic materials that degrade smthly, layer by layer, helping t prevent micrplastic pllutin, which harms the envirnment and enters the fd chain”(它可以加速对能够逐层平滑降解的塑料材料的开发,有助于防止危害环境并进入食物链的微塑料污染),选项“Breakdwn”指的是某物逐渐崩解或分解,符合题意。
根据第四段信息句“By lking at these tiny changes, we can mre quickly predict what might happen t these new materials ver time”,纳米尺度成像技术通过观察材料的微小变化,帮助更快速地预测新材料随时间的表现,强调了这种技术可以更快速、更精确地预测材料的变化,因此选项D是正确的。

41~45 CABDC 46~50 ABDCA 51~55 DBACD
43. B “take n the rle”是一个固定短语,意为“承担”或“接受”某个角色。
