Hw I Turned t Be Optimistic
I began t grw up that winter night when my parents and I were returning frm my aunt’s huse, and my mther said that we might sn be leaving fr America. We were n the bus then. I was crying, and sme peple n the bus were turning arund t lk at me. I remember that I culd nt bear the thught f never hearing again the radi prgram fr schl children t which I listened every mrning.
I d nt remember myself crying fr this reasn again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying gdbye t my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thught abut all the places I was ging t see—the strange but magical places I had knwn nly frm bks and pictures. The cuntry I was leaving never t cme back was hardly in my head then.
The fur years that fllwed taught me the imprtance f ptimism, but the idea did nt cme t me at nce. Fr the first tw years in New Yrk I was really lst—having t study in three schls as a result f family mves. I did nt quite knw what I was r what I shuld be. Mther remarried, and things became even mre cmplex fr me. Sme time passed befre my stepfather and I gt used t each ther. I was ften sad, and saw n end t “the hard times.”
My respnsibilities in the family increased a lt since I knew English better than everyne else at hme. I wrte letters, filled ut frms, translated at interviews with Immigratin fficers, tk my grandparents t the dctr and translated there, and even discussed telephne bills with cmpany representatives.
Frm my experiences I have learned ne imprtant rule: Almst all cmmn trubles eventually g away! Smething gd is certain t happen in the end when yu d nt give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn ut all right, even thugh it will nt be that easy.

In recent years, it seems that we are slwly cming t understand that animals like elephants, mnkeys and pigs have nt just brains, but cmplicated inner and scial lives thanks t scientific advances in ur understanding f animal minds. Yet that awareness hasn’t made itself felt t a much greater degree in ur clsest relatinship with animals: at the dinner table.
With Persnalities n the Plate, Barbara King asks us t think hard abut ur meat eating and hw we might reduce it. King des nt criticize. Instead, she takes us chapter by chapter n a ck’s tur f animals we humans eat, frm insects t pigs and dgs, while explring the latest scientific discveries abut their intelligence and feelings that we humans ften wrngly claim uniquely fr urselves.
Built n a mix f firsthand experience and clse engagement with the wrk f scientists, farmers and chefs, Persnalities n the Plate has successfully built a case fr them as beings that deserve mre than a trip dwn ur stmachs. With humr and tales f animals acting as individuals expressing their emtins, Persnalities n the Plate takes us n an unfrgettable jurney thrugh the wrld f animals we eat.
“This thughtful bk is nt abut whether we ‘shuld’ r ‘shuldn’t’ eat meat. Barbara King lks at the range f values and cnsequences surrunding farming and feasting, and at wh we are cnsidering eating,” says Carl Safina, authr f Beynd Wrds: What Animals Think and Feel. “Her bk gives me a richer understanding. Her methd and passin are effective. I ended the bk agreeing that I can — and shuld — help these creatures and ur envirnment by chsing t eat fewer f them r nne at all.”

Amng my friends, ne tpic seems t dminate ur cnversatins: bnes. It makes sense, given that 20 percent f American wmen ver 50 have steprsis (骨质疏松) and that mre than half have bne lss. Fr men, the figures are lwer: 4 percent and a third. Wrldwide, ne ut f three wmen ver 50 and ne ut f five lder men will develp a fracture (骨折). Anther reasn fr the endless argument abut bne prblems is mass cnfusin ver hw t strengthen yur bnes best and whether diet really makes a difference.
Diet research is always messy, and study results n nutritin and bne health haven’t been cnsistent. But gradually sme clarity is emerging. As we draw up reslutins fr what t eat, it’s useful t lk at new data n vitamin D. Calcium is the key element fr building bnes, and vitamin D helps t absrb calcium frm the fd we eat, s dctrs ften recmmend D supplements (补充剂) t make up fr age-related bne lss.
But a recent study fund that taking D supplements fr five years did nt reduce the rate f fractures in senirs. That result built n earlier findings, led by the same team, that these supplements d nt imprve bne density (密度). “Fd and sun expsure likely prvide enugh vitamin D fr healthy adults,” says Meryl LeBff, wh led the study.
What des help maintain strng bnes fr all f us? The easy answer is fd high in calcium, such as milk and tfu. “Getting it frm fd is best,” LeBff says, “because there are s many ther nutrients (营养物质), and yu have mre cntinuus absrptin than frm D supplements.”
The ther key element f bne health invlves calries ut rather than calries in. Weight-bearing exercise stimulates bne frmatin thrughut life. S while fcusing n better nutritinal chices, add mre exercise t yur daily menu.
32. What d the statistics in paragraph 1 emphasize?
A. The seriusness f bne prblems.B. The cncern abut senir citizens.
C. The cnfusin abut strengthening bnes.D. The imprtance f having a balanced diet.

A. Diet research is n lnger a challenge.
B. We’ve made reslutins t study diets.
C. Findings n bne health prve t be similar.

A. Peple can absrb vitamin D in fd easily.
B. The findings g against LeBff’s earlier nes.
C. D supplements play a minr rle than expected.
D. Fractures are linked with weight-bearing exercise.
35. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Recipes fr better bnesB. Yur bnes cry!
C. The magic f D supplementsD. Vitamin D wins!

It’s the start f the new schl year, and mst cllege students nw knw what’s expected fr their classes. But ne rule trubles sme students — the laptp rule, which limits r stps the use f laptps fr nte-taking in class.
Hw students take ntes, whether typing n a laptp r writing by hand, is a tpic f debate amng students. 36 , and they prefer t use their laptps. Hwever, I persnally supprt the laptp rule.
37 . Psychlgists Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer have fund that taking ntes n laptps is less effective than taking ntes by hand. Cmpared t typing n a keybard, writing by hand increases ur memry, and makes fr better understanding in ur brains and better understanding when ur brains read ur handwritten ntes again fr test preparatin.
Plus, laptps are als distracting (令人分心的). 38 . In many classes, I’ve seen students using laptps t g n scial media, play games, r read news. The back-and-frth between taking ntes and lking at Twitter n bright cmputer screens nearby steals my attentin away frm the lecture, which is nt fair t me.
There are sme situatins where laptps are allwed. Students with learning r physical disabilities shuld have the chice t use their laptps t take ntes. It might be easier fr them t take ntes n a keybard. 39 , they shuld nt be given the same chice.
During class time, students shuld fcus n their teacher and the lessn. 40 , it’s best t take ntes with pen and paper.
A. Since students wh use laptps take mre ntes

G. If learning is students’ gal, using a laptp during class is a terrible idea

Upn hearing the fact that I was chsen again, my classmates and friends acknwledged that I wuld undubtedly emerge as the champin again. Cnsequently, I became cnceited (自负的). I was s prud that I neglected the imprtance f practicing fr the cntest.
A week befre the cntest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, wuld yu like t stand in frnt f the class t rehearse (排练) fr the cntest?” She had tutred me in the past tw cmpetitins and knew hw imprtant practice was. “Just imagine yu are n the stage in the presence f the audience,” she added. “I’m srry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit f a sre (疼痛的) thrat.” This was usually the lie I wuld tell whenever my teacher requested me t practice in frnt f the class. I always fund excuses t avid ding it because I believed that I was the best and therefre the practice was unnecessary. On ne ccasin, I even tld Mrs. Sara nt t wrry t much as I was well prepared fr the cntest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script (手稿). I nly managed t glance briefly thrugh the stry the day befre the cntest. As the best stryteller amng the students f the lcal secndary schls, I was t vain t practice and expected everything t be fine.
