Lk t many f histry’s cultural symbls, and there yu’ll find an ancestr f Frsty, the snwman in the mvie Frzen. It appeared n sme f the first pstcards, starred in sme f the earliest silent mvies, and was the subject f a cuple f the earliest phts, dating all the way back t the 1800s. I discvered even mre abut ne f humanity’s earliest frms f life art during several years f research arund the wrld.
Fr example, snwmen were a phenmenn in the Middle Ages, built with great skill and thught. At a time f limited means f expressin, snw was like free art supplies drpped frm the sky. It was a ppular activity fr cuples t leisurely walk thrugh twn t view the temprary wrks f chilly art. Sme were created by famus artists, including a 19-year-ld Michelangel, wh in 1494 was appinted by the ruler f Flrence, Italy, t build a snwman in his mansin’s curtyard.
The Miracle f 1511 tk place during six freezing wrks called the Winter f Death. The city f Brussels was cvered in snwmen—an impressive scene that tld stries n every street crner. Sme were plitical in nature, criticizing the church and gvernment. Sme were a reflectin f peple’s imaginatin. Fr the peple f Brussels, this was a defining mment f defining freedm. At least until spring arrived, by which time they were dealing with damaging flds.
If yu fear the heyday f the snwman has passed, dn’t wrry: I’ve learned that sme explsive snwman histry is still being made tday. Every year since 1818, the peple f Zurich, Switzerland, celebrate the beginning f spring by blwing up a snwman. On the third Mnday f April, the hliday Sechselauten is kicked ff when a cttn snwman called the Bgg is stuffed with explsive and paraded thrugh twn by bakers and ther tradesmen wh thrw bread t the crwds. The parade ends with the Bgg being placed n a 40-ft pile f firewd. After the bells f the Church f St. Peter have rung six times, representing the passing f winter, the pile is lit. Mst damagingly, anger weakens a persn’s ability t think clearly and keep cntrl ver his behaviur. The angry persn lses bjectivity in evaluating the emtinal significance f the persn r situatin that aruses his anger.
Nt everyne experiences anger in the same way; what angers ne persn may amuse anther. The specific expressin f anger als differs frm persn t persn based n bilgical and cultural frces. In cntemprary culture, physical expressins f anger are generally cnsidered t scially harmful t be tlerated. We n lnger regard “duels” (决斗) as an apprpriate expressin f anger resulting frm ne persn’s awareness f insulting behaviur n the part f anther.
Anger can be identified in the brain, where the electrical activity changes. Under mst cnditins EEG (脑电图) measures f electrical activity shw balanced activity between the right and left prefrntal (额叶前部) areas. Behaviurally this crrespnds t the general even-handed dispsitin (意向) that mst f us pssess mst f the time. But when we are angry the EEG f the right and left prefrntal areas aren’t balanced and, as a result f this, we’re likely t react. And ur behaviural respnse t anger is different frm ur respnse t ther emtins, whether psitive r negative.
Mst psitive emtins are assciated with apprach behaviur: we mve clser t peple we like. Mst negative emtins in cntrast, are assciated with avidance behaviur: we mve away frm peple and things that we dislike r that make us anxius. But anger is an exceptin t this pattern. The angrier we are, the mre likely we are t mve twards the bject f ur anger. This crrespnds t what psychlgists refer t as ffensive anger: the angry persn mves clser in rder t influence and cntrl the persn r situatin causing his anger. This apprach-and-cnfrnt behaviur is accmpanied by a leftward prefrntal asymmetry f EEG activity. Interestingly, this asymmetry (不对称) lessens if the angry persn can cultivate understanding twards the individual wh is bringing frth the angry respnse. In defensive anger, in cntrast, the EEG asymmetry is directed t the right and the angry persn feels helpless in the face f the anger-inspiring situatin.

Few insects strike greater fear int the hearts f farm-wners than rsy apple aphids (蚜虫), which feed n apple trees leaves, causing them t curl up and harden. This prvides shelter frm pesticide sprays and a severe utbreak can reduce the yield by 80%.
T fight against rsy apple aphids, sme suggest using tiny parasitid (拟寄生物昆虫) wasps. Unlike predatrs that kill and eat their prey, these wasps allw their ffspring t feed n and ultimately kill the hst.
Females inject their eggs int rsy apple aphids after mating, and the hatching ffspring cnsume the hsts’ rgans befre emerging as adults. Emplying these wasps culd reduce r cut ut the need fr chemical pesticides, saving mney and helping fruit grwers achieve the premium-price-generating “rganic” label that prhibits such chemicals.
Using wasps fr pest cntrl has a lng histry but has ften failed. Researchers at the Cathlic University f Luvain believe this is due t a fcus n the dietary needs f the flesh-eating larvae (幼虫), neglecting thse f the hney-lving adults. They suggest planting flwer banks beside trees t address this issue, as detailed in the Annals f Applied Bilgy.
T test this idea, they ran an experiment in an rganic apple farm. They divided it int six plts. Three, they planted with s wildflwer species. The ther three they left flwerless, as cntrls. As aphid seasn apprached, they attached t each f nine trees per plt a tube cntaining abut 1,250 wasp larvae. Then they examined selected trees n a ten-day basis fr aphids.
The presence f flwers, they fund, was assciated with a ne-third reductin in aphid numbers, cmpared with the cntrls. Thugh that is nt as impressive as the 80-90% drp achieved with pesticide treatments, it is a prf f principle. And imprved management and understanding f the wasps’ eclgical needs culd benefit fruit grwers lking t maintain their “rganic” label while still harvesting crps.
12.Why are rsy apple aphids a surce f great anxiety fr farmers?
A. They will easily g unnticed.B. They may cause a sharp utput drp.
C. They prvide shelter fr bugs.D. They reprduce n apple leaves.

A. It requires little mnitring.B. It’s cnvenient t perate.
C. It increases insects’ ppulatins.D. It’s ecnmical and ec-friendly.
14.What can be inferred frm the experiment?
A. Flwers can enhance aphid cntrl.
B. Wasps can wipe ut aphids cmpletely.
C. Wasps are cheaper t apply than pesticides.
D. Flwers cmpete with aphids fr resurces.
15.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
