“Yu want t get ashre (海岸), nw yu need my help.” said Hands, “Tie up my wund, then I’ll tell yu hw t sail the ship.”
“I want t get t Nrth Inlet.”
Hands agreed t help me, and the Hispanila was sailing alng the cast f Treasure Island. I tied up the knife wund in his leg with a clth. After eating and drinking, he lked better.
We sn arrived at the Nrth Inlet. Hands was very gd at guiding me in, we turned int the beach, and came easily t have a rest.
I was busy bringing the ship in and frgt t watch Hands. When I turned arund, Hands was standing behind me, his knife ready. I quickly climbed up the rpes and prepared bth my guns.
“One mre mve, I’ll kill yu! Mr Hands.” I shuted.
Suddenly, a knife flew thrugh the air t me, bth guns in my hands fired, and fell int the sea tgether with Israel Hands.
Then I climbed ff the ship and swam ashre. I arrived at the frt (城堡) and walked in when my ft tuched smene’s leg. Smene was sleeping n the grund. He mved but did nt wake. Then suddenly a shrill (尖厉的) vice called ut in the darkness:
“Pieces f eight! Pieces f eight!”
It was Lng Jhn Silver’s parrt, Captain Flint!
“Wh is it?” Silver cried.
I turned t escape, but smene clsed his arms arund me and held me tight.

The Yellw River is knwn as the mther river f the Chinese peple. Hwever, fld cntrl and disaster frecasts (灾害预报) f the river have always been challenging fr peple. Nw, scientists can better wrk n these prblems by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin f the Yellw River uses different kinds f technlgies, including big data, artificial intelligence and the internet f things. Devices(设备)are set up alng the river t cllect and transmit (传送) infrmatin t the center. Based n the infrmatin, a 3D mdel f the river is shwed n the cmputer screen. It’s like the Yellw River has a twin that describes its real cnditins.
One big thing in the digital gvernance (治理) is “smart stnes”. A smart stne is a detectr (探测器) with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are put in imprtant dikes (堤坝) t recrd and reprt the mvement f dike stnes. If it feels any mvement f the dikes stnes, it will send an alarm t the center fr quick respnse.
In the sky, there are flying drnes (无人机). They are designed t lk at the river, its dikes and fld preventin prjects. The drnes prvide researchers with phts and infrmatin. The researchers use this infrmatin t update a 3D mdel t watch the changes f water t avid disasters.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligent systems are helping t prtect the Yellw River. Accrding t the Ministry f Water Resurces, in the future, we can expect t see an even mre cmplete digital system fr the river.
5.What des the digital twin f the Yellw River d?

Me and My Brain
We all knw that meaningful changes happen in ur bdies during adlescence (青春期), but have yu ever stpped t wnder what’s actually ging n inside ur brains during this time?
T paint a clear picture, we shuld first knw abut urselves with the different parts f the brain. Did yu knw, fr example, that ur brains are made up f arund 100 billin nerve cells (神经细胞) called neurns (神经元)? And cming frm these neurns are several branch-like structures fr sending and receiving electrical signals? Every time we d r think anything, a signal is sent. The signal travels dwn a lng structure called the axn (轴突) and, at the end, it passes acrss small gaps called synapses (神经元的突触) t the dendrites (树突) f anther neurn, which receive the signal. In this way, messages are sent acrss ur neural netwrk.
Our brain structure changes greatly as we grw up. Newbrn babies have almst all their neurns but few cnnectins between them, which is why they can’t d very much. After a few mnths hwever, the number f cnnectins increases quickly, which in turn helps small kids master new skills such as walking and talking. Mst brain develpment is cmpleted in the first few years, but we nw knw that ur brains cntinue t develp thrughut ur lives and perhaps the mst surprising time f change and develpment is during adlescence.
During this perid f rerganizatin, the brain ntices a sudden increase in neurns nt dissimilar t a plant grwing uncntrllably in spring. Just as we cut back a plant t make it strnger and healthier, we cut back ur brains. The cnnectins that are used becme strnger, whereas thse which aren’t used dry and die. S, the mre ften an actin r thught is activated, the strnger the cnnectins becme between the neurns, which in turn makes the part f the brain being used strnger. This explains why the mre yu d smething, the better yu becme at it, reinfrcing the ld saying “practice makes perfect”. In fact, the teenage brain prvides cnditins fr perfecting skills such as playing a musical instrument, speaking anther language, r learning a difficult cmputer game. It culd be argued that teenagers decide the develpment f their wn grey matter thrugh the activities they take part in and their experiences.
It may als be unsurprising t many t learn that the last part f the adlescent brain t develp is the frntal crtex (额皮质), respnsible fr self-cntrl, prblem slving and decisin making. S, lng befre teens are gd at abstract thinking (抽象思维) and lgical decisin making, they depend n the emtinal center f the brain t make chices and think. S perhaps unpredictable, uncertain, risk taking teenage behavirs, ften put dwn t hrmnes (荷尔蒙), may actually have mre t d with what’s ging n inside ur brain.
12.What d we learn abut the structure f the brain?
A.All neurns are activated when we think.
B.The structure f a brain cell is cmpared t a tree.
C.Neurns allw a message t travel arund the brain.
D.The structure f a brain changes when a message is sent.
13.What des Paragraph 3 tell us?
A.A decisin helps babies learn hw t speak.
B.Mst changes in brain happen after adulthd.
C.The prcess f brain develpment is cntinuus.
D.Babies are brn with the ability t d anything.

15.The writer agrees that teenagers ________.
A.are cleverer than they used t be when they study their brains
B.are misunderstd and they can play difficult cmputer games
C.want t learn mre abut the changes in their brains and bdies
D.can benefit frm understanding the changes that happen in their brains
On Feb. 15, a new vide mdel called Sra prmises t create a vide up t a minute lng frm a shrt text descriptin. Just tell Sra yur idea, and watch it make a vide right befre yur eyes. Sra is described as “eye-ppping”, “wrld-changing”, and “breathtaking, yet scaring.”
The vides frm OpenAI’s Sra are full f details. One vide f a Tky street scene shws that Sra has learned hw bjects fit tgether in 3-D: the camera ges int the scene t fllw a cuple as they walk past a rw f shps. Sra knws hw things shuld lk in real life.
Sra lks at many vides and learns frm them by breaking them int very small bits. It uses these bits t make a new vide. The new vide is grey at first and very messy. Then, Sra fixes the vide until it lks gd and smth. Sra als gets help frm ChatGPT, which turns the user’s shrt sentences int clear instructins. This helps Sra make the vide just as yu asked.
Sra may find “busy” pictures hard t understand. Fr example, when a persn mves, things arund them change. In ne vide created by Sra, a grandma blws the candle n a birthday cake, but the flame (火焰) desn’t mve. Sra may nt be able t tell “left” frm “right”.
OpenAI als says that Sra deals with cclusin well. But ne prblem is that they fail t fllw bjects when they are ut f sight. Fr example, if a truck passes in frnt f a street sign, the sign might nt reappear afterward.
In a vide f a papercraft underwater scene, Sra has added what lks like cuts between different pieces f ftage (镜头), and the mdel has kept the same style between them. But it’s nt perfect. In the Tky vide, cars t the left lk smaller than the peple walking beside them. They als pp (突然出现) in and ut between the trees. “There’s sme wrk t be dne,” says Brks. “Fr example, if smene ges ut f view fr a lng time, they wn’t cme back.”
“Sra seems like a very imprtant leap frward,” says Sam Gregry, a human rights rganizatin that specializes in the use and misuse f vide technlgy. “But there are tw sides f the cin,” he says. “The meaningful abilities help many mre peple t be strytellers using vide. And there are als pssibilities fr misuse.”
OpenAI has als realized the risks that cme with a vide mdel. The OpenAI team plans t draw n the safety testing. “We’ll need t get mre feedback (反馈) and learn mre abut the types f risks that need t be slved with vide befre it wuld make sense fr us t put Sra int use,” says Ramesh.
16.Which f the fllwing wrds has the clsest meaning t “cclusin”?

D.T intrduce what advantages Sra will bring t ur daily life.
Hilary Smith belnged t a gd family. But by the age f twenty, he had spent all the mney the gd ld family had. He then had sme truble with the bank and was put in prisn. He escaped frm the prisn and ran t Australia at nce.
Hilary did nt like Australia, and Australia did nt like Hilary. What he culd d seemed t be ne f tw things: die r wrk. Then he remembered that he was nt alne in the wrld. He had an aunt.
She was his father’s nly sister, but his father used t say she brught n glry (荣耀) t the family. Hilary, f curse, tried t discver what she had dne. It seemed that she had failed t marry a nbleman. One thing was sn clear: his aunt was seriusly ill, and nthing culd cure her illness. Hilary was very wrried. Fate had fund a hme fr him, and was nw ging t thrw him ut f it. There was nly ne thing that culd save him: her will (遗嘱).
“Will? ”she said, “yes, I have made ne. That was when I was a girl and had nt much mney. I left all my mney t sme religius peple. ”
“Didn’t yu make anther will when yu were married? ”Hilary asked.
His aunt shk her head. “N, ” she said in a lw vice. “There was n need. When I finally had a lt f mney I fund I had n relatins. ”
On the next day he went t the public library and examined a bk f law. It tld him what he already believed. When a wman is married, an earlier will lses its value. A new will must be made. If n new will is made, the mney ges t the nearest relatin. Hilary knew that he was his aunt’s nly relatin. His future was bright.
After a few mnths had passed, Hilary’s prblems became serius. He badly needed mney. He had expensive tastes, and wed a lt f mney t shpkeepers. They believed in him because his aunt was rich, but the debt was terrible.
Unluckily his aunt did nt want t discuss mney matters at all. In the end they had a quarrel abut the small amunt f ten punds. Hilary was nt very angry. He began t wnder abut a new prblem. Was it kind t want his aunt t live any lnger? Was it nt better fr her t die nw? While he was cnsidering what t d, his aunt tld him that she was ging t send fr her lawyer. S she was ging t make a new will, Hilary thught. She might leave all her mney t smene else. Sn he reached a clear decisin. He must d a great kindness t the pr ld wman.
One night when the ld servant wh had been nursing his aunt went ff, he dubled the amunt f sme medicine. The ttal amunt was t great and it culd just put her t sleep frever.
“Thank yu, ”his aunt tk the glass frm his hand with a grateful lk. “I want, mre than anything, t sleep, and never t wake up again. Is that what yu wish, Hilary? Dn’t blame (责怪) me if I have sme dubts abut what yu intended t d. Sick peple get these ideas, yu knw. One thing I ught t explain t yu. Mr. Parks never married me. He already had a wife and culdn’t marry again. That made yur flish father very angry with me…Well, if I am alive tmrrw I shall make anther will in yur favr (赞成). If I die tnight, yu’ll get nthing…. N, Hilary, dn’t try t take the glass away. If yu d that, I shall knw, and I dn’t want t knw. Gdnight, Hilary. ”
Then, very carefully, she raised the glass t her muth and drank.

What age des duku nianhua refer t?
In ne f his pems, Tang Dynasty pet Du Mu nce cmpared girls arund the age f 13 t cardamm (豆蔻) flwers in the bud (含苞待放). Since then, duku nianhua has been used t describe teen girls f this age.
Ancient Chinese peple liked t describe smene’s age using titles (称谓), rather than the exact number. Fr example, chuitia, meaning “straight hair”, meant a hairstyle that was ppular fr very yung children in ancient China. It was used fr children frm 3 t 8 years ld.
Zngjia, meaning “twisted hrn”, was used t describe children frm 9 t 14 years ld. Back then, children wuld divide their hair int tw halves and twist each half int a knt (结) n the tp f their head, just like tw hrns.
Shufa, meaning t tie ne’s hair up, was used fr bys wh had reached the age f 15. Bys wuld let dwn their “twisted hrns” and tie up their hair in a bunch (一束) when they turned 15.
Ruguan, r “junir cap”, was used fr yung men in their twenties. These men wuld g t a hat-wearing ceremny when they turned 20 t shw that they had becme adults.
The “year f independence” was when a man turned 30.
At the age f 40, ne “will nt becme puzzled”.
When a man turned 50, he had reached the “year f understanding the mandate (命令) f heaven”, meaning t becme aware f ne’s fate and n lnger make any useless effrts.

Wuld yu BET n the future f this man? He is 53 years ld. Mst f his adult life has been a lsing struggle against debt and misfrtune (不幸). A war injury has made his left hand stp functining, and he has ften been in prisn. Driven by heaven-knws-what mtives, he determines t write a bk.
The bk turns ut t be ne that has appealed t the wrld fr mre than 350 years. That frmer prisner was Cervantes, and the bk was Dn Quixte (《堂吉诃德》). And the stry brings an interesting questin: why d sme peple find new energy and creativity t the end f their days, but thers find them lng befre?
We’ve all knwn peple wh run ut f steam befre they reach life’s halfway mark. I’m nt talking abut thse wh fail t get t the tp. We can’t all get there. I’m talking abut peple wh have stpped learning n grwing because they have taken in the fixed attitudes and pinins that all t ften cme with passing years.
Mst f us, in fact, prgressively narrw the variety f ur lives. We succeed in ur field f specializatin and then becme trapped in it. Nthing surprises us. We lse ur sense f wnder. But, if we are willing t learn, the pprtunities are everywhere.
The things we learn in maturity (成熟) seldm invlve infrmatin and skills. We learn t bear (容忍) with the things we can’t change. We learn t avid self-pity. We learn that hwever much we try t please, sme peple are never ging t lve us — an idea that trubles at first but is eventually relaxing.
With high mtivatin and enthusiasm (动机和热情), we can keep n learning. Then we will knw hw imprtant it is t have meaning in ur life. Hwever, we can achieve meaning nly if we have made a prmise t smething larger than ur wn little egs (自我), whether t lved nes, t fellw humans, t wrk, r t sme mral cncept.
Many f us regard “prmise” with such “caring” jbs as teaching and nursing. But ding any rdinary jb as well as ne can is in itself an admirable prmise. Peple wh wrk tward such excellence — whether they are driving a truck, r running a stre — make the wrld better just by being the kind f peple they are. They’ve learned life’s mst valuable lessn.

Can yu imagine peple will enjy a muth-watering, delicius ribeye steak (肉眼牛排) withut harming a single animal? Aleph Farms, a fd-tech cmpany, just created the wrld’s first 3D-printed ribeye steak. The thick and juicy slab (厚片) smelt and tasted just like a steak. But unlike any steak fund n a menu r stre shelf tday, this ne didn’t cme frm a slaughtered animal.
Scientists printed it with a machine which is much like a standard 3D-printer. The difference is that this printer used cells (细胞) as a frm f living ink. The technlgy includes the printing f real living cells that are grwn in a lab. They are given nutrients (养分) and kept at a temperature that lets them keep grwing.
Interest in this kind f new meat has grw n in recent years, partly because the technlgy shws it is pssible. Supprters say that if meat can be printed, then n animal wuld need t lse its life t becme peple’s fd. S, there are plenty f reasns t be excited abut the 3D-printed steak.
Hwever, we can’t get this new meat n the stre shelf yet. Making meat this way is much harder and csts mre than raising and killing an animal. One f the mst expensive parts is the cell-grwth medium (培养基). This mix f nutrients keeps the cells alive and dividing. If scientists can find lwer-cst methds, we’ll be in with a chance f getting beef withut killing.
37.What des the underlined wrd “slaughtered” in Paragraph 1 mean?

China’s flying cars take wing n wrld stage
BY TOM GREEN|WORLDDAILY|Updated:2024-01-1708:31
With innvative (革新的) technlgical experience, Chinese high-tech prducts, frm new rbts, electric cars, t smart phnes and s n, have shwn a strng ability n the internatinal stage and becme the new favurites f CES participants.
At the CES 2024 in Las Vegas, which is the mst pwerful tech event in the wrld, China’s flying cars attracted media and peple frm all ver the wrld.
Accrding t the vice-president f a Hi-tech cmpany, their flying car is fr bth rad, driving and flying and has cmpleted its first flight.“Drivers can easily switch between flying and driving mdes,” he said. “When yu’re driving n the rad, it perates as an intelligent car. It’s abut the size f a regular car. In flight mde, it can take ff and fly ver traffic jams and rivers.”
During the research and develpment prcess f flying cars, Chinese super-car cmpanies have faced varius challenges and difficulties. These challenges culd be either gd r bad, but they are nrmal. Challenge is a natural part f perating in any cuntry. “Facing the challenges,” the manager f a super-car cmpany said, “Our first methd is t stick t ur gal: Develping prducts t slve prblems fr human beings and cnsumers and building a new mde f transprtatin fr the future—giving cars wings. Secnd, in key technlgies, we insist n cmplete self-develpment. In this way, we nt nly can better cntrl ur csts and quality, but als imprve ur cmpetitive strength.”
The influence f flying cars n human life culd be great, affecting everything frm daily rutines t glbal transprtatin netwrks. Hwever, achieving smarter travel will require further effrts.
45.Which f the fllwing shws China’s prgress in the field f high-tech?

A bat and a ball cst $1.10 in ttal, The bat csts $1.00 mre than the ball. Hw much des the ball cst? If yu answered 10 cents, yu’re nt alne—mst peple give the same answer (the crrect answer is 5 cents). It’s an example f hw we ften rely n intuitive (直觉的) respnses—answers we feel are true. Peple give answers that “pp int their mind,” says scientist Steven Slman. We dn’t spend much time thinking and checking whether the answer is right r wrng.
The bat and ball questin helps explain why we ften believe in fake news. “It is part f human nature t believe”, says Slman. “But the trick with fake news is t knw t verify”—in ther wrds, t stp and questin what yu knw.
In ne experiment, Slman invented a discvery called helium rain. They tld a grup f vlunteers abut it, but admitted they culd nt fully explain what it was. They then asked the vlunteers t rate (划分等级) their wn understanding f helium rain. Mst vlunteers rated themselves l ut f 7, meaning they did nt understand it.
The researchers then tld anther grup f vlunteers abut the discvery. This time, they said that scientists culd fully explain hw it wrks. When asked t rate their understanding, the vlunteers gave an average answer f 2. The scientists’ cnfidence gave the vlunteers an increased sense f their wn understanding, Slman says.
Anther explanatin fr the spread f fake news is “mtivated reasning,” writes Adam Waytz, a prfessr at the Kellgg Schl. We are naturally mre likely t believe things that cnfirm ur existing pinins. If yu already have a negative (负面的) pinin abut smene, yu’re mre likely t trust damaging stries abut them. Over time, Waytz argues, “mtivated reasning can lead t a false scial cnsensus (共识).”
S, in a wrld where misleading infrmatin is cmmn, is there a way t prtect urselves? “I dn’t think it’s pssible t train individuals t verify everything that they face,” Slman admits. “It is just t human t believe what yu’re tld.”
Hwever, training peple t care abut fact-checking is imprtant, he argues, especially in nline cmmunities. Think f the headlines and stries that are shared n yur scial media feed every day. Prbably these fit in with yur wn wrldview—but perhaps nt all f them are true.
“Develp a standard in yur cmmunity that says, ‘We shuld check things and nt just take them at face value,’ Slman says. “Verify befre yu believe.”
49.What des the underlined wrd “verify” mean in this passage?
A.take a clse lk at smething
B.think abut smething fr a lng time
C.make sure smething is true
D.express an pinin abut smething

B.Yu understand why yur classmate is late every day because he has many excuses.
C.Yu dn’t believe the negative news abut a player because he plays fr yur favurite team.
D.Yu’re nt sure if a stry n scial media is true, s yu search nline fr mre infrmatin.
51.The fllwing paragraph can best g after.
Accrding t Slman, studies shw that knwledge spreads like a disease. “If everyne arund yu is saying they understand why a well-knwn persn is lying, then yu’re ging t start thinking that yu understand, t.” Slman says.

German physicist Albert Einstein is ne f the mst famus scientists f all time, the persnificatin f genius and the subject f a whle industry f schlarship. In The Einsteinian Revlutin, tw experts n Einstein’s life and his thery f relativity — Israeli physicist Hanch Gutfreund and German histrian f science Jürgen Renn — ffer an riginal and penetrating (犀利的) analysis f Einstein’s revlutinary cntributins t physics and ur view f the physical wrld.
Fr the first time ever, by setting Einstein’s wrk in the lng curse f the evlutin f scientific knwledge, Gutfreund and Renn discver the ppular miscnceptin f Einstein as an uncnventinal scientific genius wh single-handedly created mdern physics — and by pure thught alne.
As a large part f the bk explains, Einstein typically argued that science prgresses thrugh steady evlutin, nt thrugh revlutinary breaks with the past. He saw his thery f relativity nt as smething frm scratch, but a natural extensin f the classical physics develped by pineers such as Italian astrnmer Galile Galilei and English physicist Isaac Newtn in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as nineteenth-century physicists.
The authrs highlight hw classical physics cannt be separated cleanly frm mdern Einsteinian physics. The bk als includes substantial sectins n Plish astrnmer Niclaus Cpernicus and Galile whse methds inspired Einstein. When Einstein cnsidered himself as standing n their shulders, he meant that, withut their cntributins, he wuld nt have frmulated (阐述) the thery f relativity.
The Einsteinian Revlutin is an imprtant and thught-prvking cntributin t the schlarly literature n Einstein and his surprising scientific creativity between 1905 and 1925. Gutfreund and Renn might nt have given the final answer as t why Einstein, f all peple, revlutinized physics in the way that he did. But they argue in fascinating detail that, t understand his genius, ne must take int accunt nt just the earlier histry f physics but als the histry f knwledge mre bradly. Althugh nt always an easy read, the bk will interest physicists and histrians alike.
