Once I t was a sharp rck cvered in pinty edges. Tday, after decades f the waters f life cursing ver me, my edges are sfter and mre understanding. I’m less likely t judge and mre interested in learning hw we can exist tgether.
But I’m nt a rck. I’m a human-being filled with all the drama built int my DNA.
Tw years ag, while traveling in the Pacific Nrthwest, I watched a restaurant wner ask a guy t leave fr nt falling in line with the rules. Nt frceful and nt rude. On the dr read a sign. “Please wear a mask befre entering ur restaurant. We dn’t like it either, but let’s all d what we can.” But the guy tried t argue abut the nte.
I sat watching, understanding bth sides. I’ve been this guy befre, using my yuthful edges t chip away at the wrld. What I lst, hwever, was the ability t grw frm experiences by lking thrugh the eyes f eyes. In learning t be mre pen, I’ve als fund mre happiness and success.
Yu can fit mre runded rcks in a jar than thse with sharp edges. The frmer lk fr ways t adjust and make rm fr thers; the latter never give an inch t accmmdate thers. T d the analysis, Edwin categrized the cgnitive demands f 305 ccupatins in Nrway. Mre cgnitively demanding jbs were nt based n rutine tasks, even thugh repetitin was required at times. “There were lawyers, dctrs, accuntants, and peple in public service in this grup, but the mst cmmn ccupatin was teaching,” Edwin said, “as effective cmmunicatin utside f the classrm and schl matters. It always depends n teachers’ understandings f students’ different situatins and teachers’ empathy.”
Having a rutine jb with little mental stimulatin during yur 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s is linked t a 66% higher risk f mild cgnitive impairment (损伤) and a 37% greater risk f dementia after the age f 70, when cmpared with having an ccupatin that requires mre cmplex thinking. “The ccupatinal envirnment is paramunt in prmting cgnitive well-being,” said Edwin. “Similarly, just like we can use physical exercise t grw and maintain ur muscles, exercising ur brain thrugh mre challenging wrk assignments seems t help fight dementia.”
“While I’d guess that peple at risk fr dementia wuld be well served by taking advantage f prfessinal advancement pprtunities, learning new jb tasks, and refining (改进) their skills at wrk ver a perid f time, further studies will need t clarify which specific activities have the mst brain healthy benefits,” Edwin added.

Many cities arund the wrld get mre rain than their surrundings. Just like the way yu have an urban heat island, yu have an urban rainfall effect, says Dev Niygi at the University f Texas at Austin.
Niygi and his clleagues lked at satellite data n rainfall between 2001 and 2020 in 1056 cities and nearby rural areas acrss different climate regins. They fund that mre than 60 percent f cities were “wet islands” while sme ther cities were “dry islands”. Fr example, H Chi Minh City and Sydney were amng the wettest anmalies (反常), each with ver 100 millimetres mre rainfall than their surrundings per year. Seattle and Ri de Janeir were amng the 10 driest.
Cities can bst r reduce rainfall in several ways. Heat absrbed by asphalt (沥青黄沙混合物) and buildings can cause updrafts that help rain cluds t frm. The rughness f buildings can slw weather systems s they rain ver urban areas fr lnger. Air pllutin can seed cluds, althugh it can als reduce rainfall by cling the air. Paved surfaces with little vegetatin can reduce evapratin, leading t less damp in the air.
The influence f these factrs varies based n the size and lcatin f cities. The team fund larger, mre ppulus cities were mre likely t be wet islands. Cities in temperate, trpical and castal regins tended t have the largest anmalies, while thse in muntainus areas generally saw smaller differences!
They als fund the average difference between wet islands and their surrundings almst dubled ver the study perid, frm 37 t 62 millimetres mre rainfall per year. Dry anmalies didn’t change. Niygi says this is because f rapid urbanizatin cmbined with warming temperatures due t climate change, which increases the amunt f water vapur in the air.
Current weather and climate mdels dn’t fully accunt fr the influence f cities n rain. But Niygi says it may eventually be pssible fr city planners t cnsider hw their decisin s affect rainfall.

B. Climate regins alng the trpical and castal areas.
C. Cities flded because f rains in their surrundings.
D. Urban areas that saw mre rains than their surrundings.
33. Which f the fllwing is related t rainfall reductin?
A. Asphalt and rugh buildings.B. Strng updrafts.
C. Paved surface with little vegetatin.D. Heated air flw.
34. What can be inferred frm the research findings?
A. Dry anmalies are nt easy t change.
B. Urban rainfall effects are increasingly serius.
C. Muntainus areas d nt have rainfall prblems.
D. Climate change is the main cncern in urban rainfall cntrl.
35. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Cities are Becming Victims f Glbal Warming
B. Develpment Turns Mst Cities int “Wet Islands”
C. Cuntry Life Dwnplays the Harm f Urban Rainfall
D. Mre Rain r Less Rain: It Depends n Hw Green ur Life Is

Hme gardens prduce delicius fd. But that’s nt their main virtue.

The deepest pleasure — as with cking, writing, bringing up children r almst anything wrthwhile — is in the wrk itself. A gardener’s memries revlve nt arund the fd prduced, but arund lng afternns with hands in the dirt. 40
