“It’s nt unusual fr guests t feel emtinal when they discver the stry behind ur fd,” says Patrick Navis. “Nt t mentin when they taste it. One even cried with happiness.” The setting fr these tearful scenes? Navis’s restaurant in a Dutch city. Here, the wner and his team create experimental fd using herbs, rts, flwers and nuts — sme cmmn, thers less s.
Mst f these ingredients (食材) cme frm the Ketelbrek Fd Frest nearby. T the untrained eye, it’s like an rdinary wd. But there’s ne key difference: everything in it is edible. It was set up in 2009 by Dutch btanist and envirnmentalist Nah Eck as an experiment in slw farming, t see what wuld happen if the right cmbinatin f fd plants were left t grw tgether like a natural frest, withut chemicals.
“It’s the first ‘fd frest’ f its kind in Eurpe and we’re ne f the few restaurants arund the wrld cperating in this way,”says Navis.“We have ver 400 different species f edible plants we plan ur menus arund, including sme we previusly knew little abut.” He harvests the ingredients and, with his fellw chefs, wrks them int beautifully presented tasting menus, served in a dining rm hidden in the backstreets f the city,
“T us, fine dining is nt abut the fame f a restaurant, its lcatin, expensive decratin, fancy cking and wine list,”says Navis.“It’s abut adding value thrugh creativity and using ingredients nbdy knws f, which are grwn with great attentin.” Hwever, he adds, luxury cking can be abut enhancing everyday ingredients, t.
“When lking at cking in this way, wh can argue that caviar (鱼子酱), fr example, is mre valuable than a carrt grwn with specialist knwledge?”
Experimentatin is extremely imprtant t Navis. In the next five years, he hpes t pen an utdr restaurant. But fr nw, the mst imprtant thing is t cntinue fcusing n hw plants are being grwn and the perennial system used in the Fd Frest, reducing the need fr replanting each seasn.
24. What can we learn abut Navis’s restaurant?
A. It is well received by its guests.
B. It serves fd with mving stries.
C. It ffers experimental fd fr free.
D. It is knwn fr its rare fd surces.

A. It is a natural frest. B. Diverse plants cexist in it.
C. Plants there take lnger t grw. D. It prvides safe fd ingredients.
26. What is the key element f fine dining accrding t Navis?
A. Cnvenient lcatins. B. Expensive ingredients.
C. Innvative menus. D. Fancy cking techniques.

Abut 5,300 years ag, peple frm the grasslands f mdern-day Russia and Ukraine expanded rapidly acrss Eurasia. Within a few centuries these “Yamnaya” left a lasting genetic mark n ppulatins frm central Eurpe t the Caspian Sea. Tday, archaelgists call them “eastern cwbys” fr their livestck herding (畜牧) and highly mbile lifestyle.
But ne part f the classic cwby picture was missing: hrseback riding. Althugh cattle bnes and slid carriages have been fund in Yamnaya sites, hrse bnes are hard t find, and mst archaelgists assumed peple did nt start t ride hrses until at least 1,000 years later.
In a new study published in Science Advances, researchers say they’ve fund the earliest evidence f hrseback riding nt in the bnes f ancient hrses, but in their Yamnaya riders. “Everyne has fcused n hrse remains t get an idea f early hrse riding,” says c-authr and University f Helsinki archaelgist Vlker Heyd. “Our apprach was t lk at humans.”
The researchers lked at mre than 150 bnes unearthed in Rmania, Hungary, and Bulgaria — the western frntier f Yamnaya expansin. The Yamnaya were well-fed, healthy, and tall; the chemical cmpsitin f their bnes shwed prtein rich diets cnsistent with herding cattle and sheep. But the bnes shwed signs f distinctive wear and tear. They als shwed thick spts n the leg bne cnsistent with lts f time spent n the hrse back. Healed injuries matched the kinds f damage a kicking hrse might cause, r what sprts medicine dctrs tday see in riders thrwn frm their hrses.
“In terms f trying t identify peple riding hrses, I think they’ve dne the best jb pssible biarchaelgically,” says biarchaelgist Jane Buikstra. “That desn’t mean it’s perfect, r cnvincing, ultimately.”
Mre samples — including hrse bnes with signs f riding, such as bit marks r back bne damage frm the weight f a rider — wuld help make the case, says CU biarchaelgist Lauren Hsek. What the grup has fund “is really interesting”, she says. “But there’s a lt mre wrk t be dne when the risks f drawing the final cnclusin are as high as the earliest hrse riding.”
28. Why are the archaelgists lking fr the hrse bnes?
A. T prve the Yamnaya’s rapid expansin.
B. T cnfirm the Yamnaya’s herding variety.
C. T further understand the lifestyle f Yamnaya.
D. T trace the rigin f the classic cwby picture.
29. Hw is Vlker Heyd’s research different frm thers?
A. It includes field trips.
B. It fcuses n human bnes.
C. It is based n hrse remains.
D. It cmpares the cmpsitins f bnes.
30. What d we knw abut the Yamnaya frm Paragraph 4?
A. Their bnes bre the evidence f hrse riding.
B. Many Yamnaya peple died frm hrse kicks.
C. Their lifestyle f herding led t severe injuries.
D. They mainly lived in Rmania, Hungary and Bulgaria.
31. What is Lauren Hsek’s attitude t the research findings?
A. Objective. B. Favrable.
C. Disapprving. D. Unclear.

A grup f small, wiggling (扭动) rbts that cmmunicate by flashing lights can make cllective decisins. This is similar t the prcess bees use t reach a cnsensus(共识) n where t build their nest.
“We believe that in the near future there are ging t be simple rbts that will d jbs that we dn’t want t d, and it will be very imprtant that they make decisins in an autnmus manner,” says Carmen Miguel at the University f Barcelna in Spain. She and her team tested hw imitating bees might help with that.
When bees g huse-hunting, they cmmunicate their preferred lcatins thrugh a “wiggle dance”. The mre a bee recmmends ne lcatin, the lnger and harder it wiggles. Eventually ther bees jin them, and they reach a cnsensus when a majrity are wiggling tgether. Researchers previusly translated this behavir int a mathematical mdel, and Miguel and her clleagues used it t prgram decisin-making rules int small rbts called kilbts.
Each kilbt with three thin legs had an infrared-light emitter (红外线发射器) and receiver, and a clred LED light. Within a grup, kilbts culd mve arund, turn clckwise r anticlckwise and use infrared signals t exchange infrmatin.
Ezequiel Ferrer at the University f Barcelna says that acrss all the experiments, kilbts reached a cnsensus within abut half an hur, even when they didn’t have many immediate neighbrs t cmmunicate with. He says that getting the right cmbinatin f hw lng they spend transmitting their message and hw much they walk arund allwed them t make a cllective decisin in the end.
32.Hw d bees agree with each ther abut where t cnstruct a new hme?
A.By ding a grup dance.B.By imitating simple rbts.
C.By giving ut flashing lights.D.By advising a favured place.
33.What did the team d t enable kilbts t becme smart?
A.They expsed kilbts t real bees.
B.They equipped kilbts with thin legs.
C.They put a prgramme int kilbts.
D.They built a special mathematical mdel.
34.What’s the key element fr kilbts t make grup judgement?
A.Ding mre practical experiments.
B.Having enugh cmpanins arund.
C.Cmbining different figures accurately.
D.Sending brief messages autmatically.
35.Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
A.Bees are natural wiggle dancers.
B.Rbts learn t dance by imitating bees.
C.Wiggle dances mean a lt in cmmunicatin.
D.Rbts reach a cnsensus by imitating bees wiggling.

Hwever, slid gld medals were n lnger awarded after 1912. 37 As a result, the Internatinal Olympic Cmmittee later updated the regulatins regarding medal cmpsitin and design.
Mdern gld medals are primarily cmpsed f 92.5% silver with a six-gram gld plating fr appearance. 38 They cntain at least 92.5% pure silver, and brnze medals cnsist f 95% cpper and 5% zinc (锌). This mixture ensures the medals’ lngevity and makes them cheaper. An Olympic gld medal may be wrth ver £500, but its value t athletes ges beynd its financial wrth.
39 Fr instance, the 2012 Lndn Olympics medals featured the River Thames and Lndn skyline. Ri 2016 fcused n sustainability by using leftver mirrrs and X-ray plates. Tky 2020 medals, made frm recycled electrnics, emphasized technlgical innvatin.
Fr the Paris 2024 Olympics, the medals are particularly distinctive. Each features a hexagn (六边形) with the Paris 2024 lg n ne side and Nike, the Greek gddess f victry, in frnt f the Eiffel Twer n the ther. 40 As Thierry Rebul, creative directr f Paris 2024, stated, “These medals ffer athletes a physical piece f Paris t take hme.”
A. Pure gld is sft and easily damaged.
B. When were these medals first intrduced?
C. Wh is respnsible fr designing the medals?
D. Silver medals, by cntrast, live up t their names.
E. With these symbls, they hnr the histry f the Olympics.
F. Unique t this year, the medals use metal frm the Eiffel Twer.
G. The design f medals reflects the hst city’s distinct style and values.

They called him "Dnnie the Dung Beetle". Dnald didn't mind the cmparisn, as he knew that African dung beetles (粪金龟) were knwn fr mving things a thusand times their wn bdy weight. Hwever, his classmates in Mrs. Beecher's third-grade class prbably didn't knw this fact. Nbdy knew insects like Dnald did, and he figured that being cmpared t a dung beetle was nt a praise.
One day, Richie made fun f Dnald, pinting twards a cntainer under the windw where a small brwn ball hung frm a branch. Dnald tried t explain that it was an egg case f a praying mantis(螳螂),and the exciting part wuld be when the eggs hatched. But Richie didn't understand, and neither did mst f the ther kids. Dnald had brught the egg case frm his backyard and was excited when Mrs. Beecher agreed t make it their class prject. He thught having an insect as a class pet might finally give him smething t talk abut with the ther kids. But after tw mnths f staring at a lifeless brwn ball, Dnald began t lse hpe.
During science class ne day, Mrs. Beecher annunced they wuld start by writing in their jurnals. As Dnald pened his jurnal, a leftver particle frm his lunch rlled acrss the page. When he went t brush it ff, he realized it wasn't a particle at all- it was a tiny praying mantis, barely the size f a grain f rice! Dnald bunced ut f his seat, crying ut that the eggs were hatching.
Suddenly, chas erupted in the classrm as mre baby mantises started appearing everywhere. Kids were jumping ut f their seats, screaming and waving their arms.
