ne, I placed them in a bag and headed back. When the mther wlf sptted me, she std up, pssibly picking up
the smell f her yung. I released the pups, and they raced t her.
What next? I wndered. The mther wlf was clearly suffering. Ye t each time I mved in her directin, she
let ut a threatening sund.
I put up a shelter fr myself and was sn asleep nearby. At dawn, I was awakened by the fur pups sniffing
at my face and hands. I glanced tward the anxius mther wlf. If I culd nly win her cnfidence, I thught. It
was her nly hpe. Over the next few days, I fed her, talked gently with her and played with the pups. But the big

Crssing yur legs is an extremely cmmn habit; mst peple dn't even ntice that they're ding it when they
sit dwn. While yu may find it cmfrtable t sit with ne knee crssed ver the ther, it might be causing
health prblems that yu are nt aware f.
A study published in Bld Pressure Mnitring stated that sitting with yur legs crssed can increase yur
bld pressure. The reasn fr this is that the bld in yur legs has t wrk against gravity t be pumped back t
yur heart and that crssing ne leg ver the ther increases resistance, making it even harder fr the bld t
circulate. This causes yur bdy t increase yur bld pressure t push the bld back t the heart. Yu wn't
feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-ut increases in bld pressure can cause lng-term health issues.
S, planning t sit fr a lng perid f time? Dn't keep yur legs crssed.
Crssing yur legs at the knee can als cause pressure n the majr nerve in yur leg that passes just belw
yur knee and alng the utside f yur leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause
numbness and temprary paralysis (麻痹) f sme f the muscles in yur ft and leg, preventing yu frm being
able t raise yur ankle—what we knw as that “pins and needles” sensatin. While the feeling f discmfrt
may nly last a minute r tw, repeatedly crssing yur legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve
damage.
S next time yu sit dwn, try t get yurself in the habit f sitting with bth f yur feet n the flr. Nt nly
will it help yur psture and stability, but it will als save yur health in the lng run.

30. In the third paragraph “pins and needles” prbably means________.
A. being highly flexible B. being a little tired
C. serius muscle injuries D. slight sharp pains
31. What is the main purpse f the text?

The rainfrests f eastern Australia are hme t a stinging (刺人的) tree knwn as Dendrcnide. Many peple
call it the gympie-gympie tree — a name given t the tree by indigenus Australians. It’s cvered with sharp,
needle-like hairs that carry pisn. If yu brush up against a gympie-gympie tree, yu wn’t frget it anytime
sn. The pain can stay with yu fr hurs, days r weeks. In sme cases, it’s been reprted t stay fr mnths.
Scientists have lng lked fr the surce f this pwerful sting. Nw researchers at the University f
Queensland have discvered what makes this stinging plant s painful. After carefully studying different kinds f
gympie-gympie trees, the scientists were able t separate ut different chemicals that the trees prduce. This
allwed them t identify a grup f chemicals that they believed was respnsible fr the pain.
The researchers created artificial versins f these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”. Sure enugh,
when the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked (舔) at the places where they’d been injected,
indicating that they hurt in thse places. When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they fund
that they frmed a knt-like shape. The shape makes the chemical very stable, which helps explain hw the pain
lasts s lng.
The knt-like shape f the gympietides was similar t the shape f pisns prduced by pisnus spiders and
cn e snails. The scientists were surprised t see three very different kinds f life all use similar pisns. Spiders
and cne snails carry pisns because they catch fd by stinging ther creatures. It’s nt clear hw stinging
helps the gympie-gympie tree.
Thugh the tree’s sting may stp sme animals frm eating it, it desn’t stp all animals. Beetles and
pademelns (small relatives f the kangar) are able t eat the plant withut truble.
32. A tuch n the stinging tree is unfrgettable because ________.

34. What des the text imply abut the stinging tree?
A. It prduces the same pisns as spiders.
B. Pisnus as it is, it als has natural enemies.
C. Animals are wise enugh t stay away frm it.
D. Only ne chemical in it causes pain t the tucher.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Stinging Trees’ Secrets Expsed B. Warning: Trees That Can Pisn Yu
C. Strange Tree Species Fund in Australia D. Ways t Avid Being Hurt by Stinging Trees
