S that’s why I had the stupid idea t buy an ld Tyta I fund n the lt f an hnest used car salesman. Thank heavens I came t my senses befre I spent $8000 t buy it, $80 r s t license it and prbably $500 t insure it fr a year. It wuld be senseless t buy that car. My grandkids just have t cntinue t cme with me ne by ne. I can’t take tw girls ut t lunch r tw girls shpping r pick up the brther and sister that live in the same huse. As fr the little ne that’s nt allwed t ride with me. . . well, Grandpa will have t pick her up. As fr me, I didn’t get mney in my savings accunt by being ttally stupid. Their jb is t detect emerging trends. Their ntes will instantly be added t selected “trend frecasts”, which will be sld t designers, wh will use them t inspire new pieces. Traditinally, these fashin frecasters have relied nly n such methds t make predictins.
But as artificial intelligence (AI) technlgies have becme increasingly pwerful in the last decade, frecasting agencies are nw turning t machine learning fr help.
This is all welcme news fr an industry wrth abut $2 trillin glbally. Frecasts can have a big influence n the fashin industry’s carbn ftprint, which is respnsible fr at least 4% f all wrldwide emissins. Designers will prduce mre f what will actually sell at the mment, 25% f fashin prducts are unsalable, r nt sld. Besides, using Al tls that can analyze millins f psts frm arund the wrld allws designers t lk at fashin trends mre glbally.
But designers ften feel insecure abut relying just n the data prvided by AI. “A few years ag, there were big indicatrs n scial media f yellw being a trend,” says Francesca Mustn, vice president f a trend frecasting cmpany. “And if yu had fllwed cmpletely the scial media data gathered by AI mdels, yellw pieces wuld seem t be a gd investment. But hw many peple are really ging t wear a bright yellw cat? That’s a brave fashin chice. “ AI tls dn’t have their wn aesthetic (审 美 的) viewpint s they may nt be able t satisfy peple’s desire fr newness. “That’s why we maintain a very strng creative viewpint in ur frecasting with a team f industry experts,” says Mustn.

The sharp fin (鳍). The rws upn rws f sharp teeth. The large black eyes. The sharks yu see n televisin in Jaws r Discvery’s “Shark Week” are nt the friendliest lking creatures. They aren’t exactly an animal yu want t find near yu while swimming in the cean. Despite their prtrayals (刻画) in mvies and ppular culture, sharks are cmplicated, misunderstd creatures that are weaker than they appear.
One very cmmn misunderstanding abut sharks is their desire t hunt humans. Actually when sharks attack humans, it is because they mistake a human fr their nrmal prey (猎物), seals r dlphins. They dn’t seek ut humans n purpse. Statistically, yu are mre likely t be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark.
Sharks are very imprtant t the cean as they are at the tp f the fd chain. Sme sharks even cntrl the balance f an ecsystem thrugh fear alne. Tiger sharks in Australia help prtect seagrass meadws frm turtles. Turtles eat the seagrass and withut the sharks, will destry these meadws. When tiger sharks are present thugh, the turtles are scared away, hlding back their appetite fr seagrass and prtecting its grwth.
Thugh sharks have a reputatin fr being very scary t humans, the sad truth is that they shuld be scared f humans. The number f sharks in the cean is steadily drpping. There are a few reasns fr this. Fr ne, they mature quite slwly, ver several years, and prduce relatively few yung. Fr anther, verfishing f sharks is happening because mre and mre peple want their fins. Abut 100 millin sharks are killed every year accrding t Natinal Gegraphic. Shark fin is a way fr peple t shw ff their wealth. Shark fins are als believed t have medicinal benefits, thugh there is n evidence r prf that they actually d.

    33. The authr cmpares shark bites t lightning strikes t shw they are
    A. deadly B. unavidable C. rare D. unpredictable
    34. Why shuld sharks be scared f humans accrding t the authr?
    A. Humans kill sharks in large quantities. B. Humans keep sharks t shw ff.
    C. Humans catch sharks fr medical research. D. Humans are greater in number than sharks.
    35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
    A. SOS: Save Our Sharks! B. Sharks: Killers r Misunderstd?

In the wrkplace, it’s crucial t avid making prmises we can’t keep. But hw can we d this?
One way t d this is by being realistic abut ur capabilities and timetable. Fr instance, a wrkmate asks us t cmplete a task within an extremely tight deadline, but we’ re already busy with ther wrk. 36 We culd say, “Let me check my current wrklad and get back t yu n whether I can meet this deadline.”
37 If we’ re nt sure abut the requirements f a task r prject, we shuld ask questins befre cmmitting. Fr example, when a manager assigns a cmplex prject, we can ask fr mre details abut the resurces available, and ptential challenges. This way, we can make a mre infrmed decisin.
Mrever, we shuld learn t say n when necessary. 38 It shws that we respect ur wn limitatins and the imprtance f delivering quality wrk. Fr example, if we’re re asked t take n a task that we knw is beynd ur expert knwledge r skills, we can plitely decline and suggest alternative slutins r peple wh might be better suited fr the jb. This actin will earn us the respect f ur wrkmates. 39
Furthermre, it’s imprtant t manage expectatins. If we’ re asked t d smething that may have uncertainties, we shuld cmmunicate them upfrnt (先期地). Fr instance, we’re asked t prepare a presentatin, but we can’t cllect all the necessary data in time. Then, we culd say, “ 40 But I’ll d that and keep yu updating n my prgress.” This way, ur superirs are aware f the ptential risks and wn’t be blindsided.
    A. Cmmunicating clearly is a wise chice.
    B. Naturally, we can maintain a gd reputatin in the wrkplace.
    C. Instead f immediately saying yes, take a mment t assess ur schedule.
    D. There might be sme challenges with finding enugh infrmatin.
