They were super-wealthy, and actually cared abut the educatin f their tw daughters. This came as a surprise because at that time, being brn with tw X chrmsmes (染色体) was the high rad t a life full f knitting and taking care f a husehld but her father was really dedicated t his tw daughters. Educatin fr wmen at that time was still at its earliest but Flrence gt the best educatin pssible.
On February 5, 1837, the teenage Flrence declared that she had had a visin and Gd had cmmanded her t end suffering in this wrld and this is when she jined Nursing. Bth f her parents disagreed with that, cnsidering that at that time nursing was lked dwn upn. Flrence ver the next 12-13 years tried cnvincing her parents, but they didn’t give in.
Aged 29, she even refused suitrs (求婚者) t fcus n her nursing career which at that time was nn-existent. When Flrence turned 30, her dad was cmpletely wrn ut frm resisting and then sent her t Germany fr nursing training. In 1853 her dream was cmpletely realized and she undertk a jb in Lndn at a hspital.

Climate change is causing Eurpe t heat up mre quickly than any ther cntinent, and that heat is deadly, accrding t a new reprt by Eurpean climate fficials.
The whle planet is warming up because f heat-trapping pllutin (吸热污染) frm il, gas and cal. But Eurpe is getting warmer faster. Samantha Burgess is the deputy directr f the Cpernicus Climate Change Service, which is the EU’s fficial weather and climate rganizatin. She says Eurpe is warming abut twice as fast as the glbal average. “Glbally, we’re lking at abut a 0.2 degrees Celsius change per decade, whereas Eurpe is, I think, abut 0.4 degrees Celsius per decade.”
Thse tenths f a degree add up quickly. Eurpe is already mre than 4 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than it was in the late 1800s. One reasn Eurpe is heating up s quickly is that it’s very clse t the Arctic, and the plar regins feel the effects f climate change mre intensely. Anther reasn is that the cean and atmspheric currents arund Eurpe are warmer in general than thse at similar latitudes (纬度) in ther parts f the wrld. That’s why Lndn’s winters are s much mre temperate than Chicag’s, even thugh Lndn is farther nrth. And it means that as the ceans and atmsphere heat up, Eurpe feels it in a big way.
Last year was tied fr the httest year n recrd in Eurpe. A new reprt by the Cpernicus Climate Change Service and the United Natins finds that the number f deaths frm ht weather in Eurpe has grwn by at least 30% in the last 20 years.
Last summer was a prime (最典型的) example. During a heat wave in July, intense heat and humidity made it feel like it was 110 degrees Celsius r htter in nearly half f suthern Eurpe. That’s the kind f heat that can kill peple if they dn’t have access t air cnditining. Preliminary estimates say tens f thusands f peple likely died. Eurpean cities are scrambling t make sure residents have access t air cnditining and reliable electricity fr that air cnditining.
    28. Why des the authr mentin what Samantha Burgess said in Paragraph 2?
    A. T indicate that Eurpe used the mst il, gas and cal.
    B. T suggest that Eurpe had the mst peple killed by heat.
    C. T prve that Eurpe was getting warmer the fastest.
    D. T tell us that Eurpe is in the Arctic regin.
    29. What caused Lndn’s winter t be warmer than that f Chicag?
    A. The difference f latitudes.
    B. The distance frm the equatr.
    C. The impact f heat-trapping pllutin.
    D. The effect f cean and atmspheric currents.
    30. What des the underlined wrd “scrambling” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Climbing hard t the tp f a muntain.
    B. Writing wrds t casually t be readable.
    C. Cmpeting with thers in rder t get smething.
    D. Managing t d smething in a hurry.
    31. Which clumn f a newspaper des this article belng t?
    A. Envirnment.B. Histry.C. Surce.D. Health.
    D
Researchers at the University f Califrnia, San Francisc were able this year t hk peple up t brain mnitrs (监测仪) and generate natural-sunding synthetic (合成的) speech ut f mere brain activity. The gal is t give peple wh have lst the ability t speak — because f a strke, epilepsy (癫痫) r smething else — the pwer t talk t thers just by thinking. That’s pretty excellent.
One area where A.I. can mst immediately imprve ur lives may be in the area f mental health. Unlike many illnesses, there’s n simple physical test yu can give smene t tell if he r she is suffering frm depressin. Primary care physicians can be medicre (平庸的) at recgnizing if a patient is depressed, r at predicting wh is abut t becme depressed. Many peple cnsider suicide, but it is very hard t tell wh is really serius abut it. Mst peple dn’t seek treatment until their illness is well advanced. Using A.I., researchers can make better predictins abut wh is ging t get depressed next week, and wh is ging t try t kill themselves.
Many grups are using A.I. technlgy t diagnse and predict depressin. Fr example, after listening t millins f cnversatins, machines can pick ut depressed peple based n their speaking patterns. When peple suffering frm depressin speak, the range and pitch (音高) f their vice tends t be lwer. There are mre pauses, starts and stps between wrds. Peple whse vice has a breathy quality are mre likely t reattempt suicide. Machines can detect this stuff better than humans.
There are als visual (视觉的) patterns. Depressed peple mve their heads less ften. Their smiles dn’t last as lng. One research team led by Andrew Reece and Christpher Danfrth analyzed 43,950 phts frm 166 peple and recgnized wh was depressed with 70 percent accuracy, which is better than general practice dctrs. There are ther ways t make these diagnses. A cmpany called Mind Strng is trying t measure mental health by hw peple use their smartphnes: hw they type and scrll (滚动翻页), hw frequently they delete characters.
What’s mre, in his bk “Deep Medicine,” which is abut hw A.I. is changing medicine acrss all fields, Eric Tpl describes a study in which a learning algrithm (算法) was given medical recrds t predict wh was likely t attempt suicide. It accurately predicted attempts nearly 80 percent f the time. By incrprating (列入) data f real-wrld interactins such as laughter and anger, an algrithm in a similar study was able t reach 93 percent accuracy.
Medicine is hard because we’re much mre different frm ne anther than we thught. Yu can be upset by the privacy-invading pwer f A.I. t knw yu, but nly A.I. can gather the data necessary t d this. The result is that we are entering a wrld in which peple we dn’t knw will be able t understand the mst private details f ur emtinal life by bserving the ways we cmmunicate.
    32. What’s the purpse f cnnecting peple t brain mnitrs?
    A. Making man-made sund ut f the patients’ brain activity.
    B. Helping peple with speaking difficulties pen their muths t speak.
    C. Offering peple with speaking disabilities the pwer t speak by thinking.
    D. Saving the lives f thse wh suffer frm a strke, epilepsy r smething else.
    33. In which field can A.I. imprve ur lives in the mst immediate way?
    A. Medicine.B. Mental health.C. Medical care.D. Physical health.
    34. Hw many ways A.I. technlgy is used t diagnse and predict depressin are mentined?
    A. TwB. Three.C. Fur.D. Five.
    35. What’s the best title f the passage?
    A. AI helps peple increase their ability f speech.
    B. AI makes better predictins abut depressin.
    C. AI gives away peple’s privacy.
    D. AI increases peple’s well-being by using varius methds.
