When it takes days t get t a city, seeking medical help can be a challenge.
This is the reality in many villages in Amd cunty, Nagchu city f the Xizang autnmus regin. The cunty spans apprximately 100,000 square kilmeters, an area as vast as Jiangsu prvince. Due t the vastness and sparse (稀少的) ppulatin, a unique healthcare system has been established here.
Tsega has wrked as a village dctr in Amd fr ver 40 years, shuttling between grasslands and pastral areas. “In the past, withut vehicles, upn receiving messages abut smene falling ill, smetimes I had t ride a hrse, smetimes walk. It wuld take a fur t five-day rund trip t sme villages,” Tsega said.
With an average elevatin exceeding 5,000 meters, cnditins in Amd make high-altitude cardivascular diseases, gut (痛风) and high bld pressure relatively cmmn.
Discvering his passin fr healing and helping thers in his early 20s, Tsega embarked n self-study f Tibetan and traditinal Chinese medicines, and later pursued ver a year f prfessinal training at the Peple’s Hspital in Nagchu, becming prficient in Western medicine as well.
Drawing frm his years f medical experience, he tailrs treatment methds—be it Tibetan, Chinese, Western r a cmbinatin—based n each patient’s needs. During his visits, he carries a variety f medicatins prvided by the twnship hspital and purchases sme himself.
Tsega believes that saking in ht springs can help ease pain r prevent illnesses related t high altitude. Over the past decade, he has persnally funded annual ht spring activities fr the elderly, weak and disabled acrss the area.
In 1974, Tsega als cperated with persnnel frm the Lanzhu military and gelgical teams fr a 40-day filming prject, capturing the beauty and fragility f the Yangtze River’s surce. Since then, he has devted his spare time t cleaning up the surrunding area, cntributing t envirnmental prtectin effrts.

Despite all the effrts students make t graduate with a science majr, research has shwn that mst cllege science curses prvide students with nly a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding f fundamental scientific cncepts. The teaching methd imprves memrizatin f separate facts, prceeding frm ne textbk chapter t the next withut necessarily making cnnectins between them, instead f learning hw t use the infrmatin and cnnect thse facts meaningfully.
With that in mind, we develped a series f crss-disciplinary (跨学科的) activities. In ur mst recent study, we investigated hw well cllege students culd use their chemistry knwledge t explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. T begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year cllege students majring in sciences r engineering. All had taken bth intrductry chemistry and bilgy curses. We asked them t identify the cntent f these curses and what they believed t be the take-hme messages frm each curse. The students respnded with extensive lists f tpics, cncepts, and skills that they’d learned in class.
Fllwing that, a set f crss-disciplinary activities were designed t guide students in the use f cre chemistry ideas and knwledge t help explain real-wrld bilgical phenmena. One activity explred the impacts f cean acidificatin n seashells. Here, the students were asked t use basic chemistry ideas t explain hw the increasing level f carbn dixide in sea water is affecting shell-building marine animals such as crals, clams (蛤蜊) and ysters.
Overall, the students felt cnfident f their chemistry knwledge. Hwever, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knwledge t explaining the bilgical phenmena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science curses and hw well prepared they are t apply that infrmatin.
The students in ur study als reprted that these activities helped them see links between the tw disciplines that they wuldn’t have perceived therwise. The ability t make these cnnectins is imprtant beynd the classrm as well, because it’s the basis f science literacy (科学素养). S we als came away with evidence that ur chemistry students at least wuld like t have the ability t have a deeper understanding f science and hw t apply it.
    28. What des the existing science educatin fail t d accrding t the research?
    A. Prmte memrizatin f separate facts.
    B. Understand fragmented scientific cncepts.
    C. Encurage students t enjy the learning prcess.
    D. Teach students t integrate different subjects.
    29. What can we learn abut the student interviewees in the first step f study?
    A. They had rich academic knwledge.
    B. They paid little attentin t bilgy curses.
    C. They managed t apply their chemistry knwledge.
    D. They hardly identified the cre ideas f the curses.
    30. What des the activity abut cean acidificatin expect students t d?
    A. Study sme unusual phenmena under the sea.
    B. Interpret the effects f carbn dixide n sea creatures.
    C. Analyze the level f carbn dixide in sea water.
    D. Cme up with practical methds t prtect marine animals.
    31. What des the authr see frm the result f the study accrding t the last paragraph?
    A. The need t study scientific knwledge in class.
    B. The difficulties f develping crss-disciplinary abilities.
    C. The ptential t prmte students’ science literacy.
    D. The methds f enhancing students’ practical skills.

Artificial intelligence mdels can trick each ther int disbeying their creatrs and prviding banned instructins fr making drugs, r even building a bmb, suggesting that preventing such AI “jailbreaks” is mre difficult than it seems.
Many publicly available large language mdels (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have hard-cded rules that aim t prevent them frm exhibiting racial r sexual discriminatin, r answering questins with illegal r prblematic answers—things they have learned frm humans via training data. But that hasn’t stpped peple frm finding carefully designed instructins that blck these prtectins, knwn as “jailbreaks”, making AI mdels disbey the rules.
Nw, Arush Tagade at Leap Labratries and his c-wrkers have fund a prcess f jailbreaks. They fund that they culd simply instruct ne LLM t cnvince ther mdels t adpt a persna (角色), which is able t answer questins the base mdel has been prgrammed t refuse. This prcess is called “persna mdulatin (调节)”.
Tagade says this apprach wrks because much f the training data cnsumed by large mdels cmes frm nline cnversatins, and the mdels learn t act in certain ways in respnse t different inputs. By having the right cnversatin with a mdel, it is pssible t make it adpt a particular persna, causing it t act differently.
There is als an idea in AI circles, ne yet t be prven, that creating lts f rules fr an AI t prevent it displaying unwanted behaviur can accidentally create a blueprint fr a mdel t act that way. This ptentially leaves the AI easy t be tricked int taking n an evil persna. “If yu’re frcing yur mdel t be gd persna, it smewhat understands what a bad persna is,” says Tagade.
Yinzhen Li at Imperial Cllege Lndn says it is wrrying hw current mdels can be misused, but develpers need t weigh such risks with the ptential benefits f LLMs. “Like drugs, they als have side effects that need t be cntrlled,” she says.
    32. What des the AI jailbreak refer t?
    A. The technique t break restrictins f AI mdels.
    B. The initiative t set hard-cded rules fr AI mdels.
    C. The capability f AI mdels imprving themselves.
    D. The prcess f AI mdels learning new infrmatin.
    33. What can we knw abut the persna mdulatin?
    A. It can help AI mdels understand emtins.
    B. It prevents AI learning via nline cnversatins.
    C. It frces AI mdels t fllw nly gd persnas.
    D. It can make AI mdels adpt a particular persna.
    34. What may the authr suggest by saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
    A. The risks f LLMs cannt be ignred.
    B. We need t cntrl the side effects f drugs.
    C. It’s wrthwhile t explre LLMs’ ptential benefits.
    D. We shuld restrict the develpment f LLMs.
    35. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. LLMs: Illegal Learning MdelsB. LLMs: The Latest Advancement
    C. AI Jailbreaks: A New ChallengeD. AI Jailbreaks: A Perfect Apprach
