We read the elective ptins carefully and sweet relief flded thrugh me. "Yu can sign up fr band, yearbk and Spanish, and yu wn't have t take PE ever," I tld her. I settled back int my chair, a weight taken ff my chest. My daughter, hwever, frwned. "But I'm nt sure I want t take Spanish. And I want t d the leadership class…and try drama!"
I brke in n her wrds with mre practical wisdm. "Yu can't pick the electives yu want, thugh. They're rganized randmly. S yu might get drama and leadership…, r yu might get gym class r technlgy educatin. Yu might get the classes yu want, and yu might nt. Is it wrth risking having t take PE?" Finally, she chse t take the chance and signed up fr band, yearbk and ne perid f the unknwn elective. I reminded myself she was nt me.
Watching yur child walk int the trap f middle schl is wrse than experiencing it yurself. Mtherhd, after all, is t decide frever t have yur heart g walking arund utside yur bdy. The classic 1951 science fictin film "The Day the Earth Std Still" includes an impressive character— a frightening rbt(Grt)whse terrible actins are under cntrl nly when he is rdered, "Klaatu Barada Nikt". What des this mean? I dn't knw. But when I verhear my students speaking t each ther, I am ften similarly cnfused.
I teach at a university. One f the "prblems" is that as the years pass, I get lder, but my students remain the same age—18 t 22. Early n, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn't an issue, as we were clse enugh in age t speak the same language. But lately I have becme well aware that a language ship seems t have sailed, and I am nt n bard.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked int my class, my students were chatting happily with each ther. One f their cmments caught my ear: "Venm it t me." I had n idea what "Venm" meant, s I asked. The gd-natured students were happy t explain it t me, and in return I ndded with an awkward expressin, as if I shuld have knwn better.
I went hme that evening, absrbed in that mment f nn cmprehensin(不理解). I am nt against change, but I am uncmfrtable with change when its pace has me hanging n by my fingernails. If I were t awaken frm a five-year nap, I'd have n idea what peple were talking abut. I just wuldn't understand the language.
Their willingness t explain their wrds t me is a great cmfrt, and I cngratulate myself n at least having interest in what they' re talking abut, as well as n my ability—fr the mst part—t understand their explanatins.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and that the language ship finally disappears ver the hrizn? The answer, t me, is clear: Klaatu Barada Nikt.

While the use f the iPad in schls has changed the way children are taught, it hasn't cmpletely replaced mre traditinal methds f teaching. Wrksheets are still used in class as sme children prefer the cntact with paper. The children all have a textbk and exercise bks. In Anne Laure's schl, Parents feared that the iPads wuld replace exercise bks and the children wuld lse handwriting skills. Anne Laure says, "The teachers are nt ready t let g f the traditinal style f teaching. We have welcmed the iPads in s much as they help cmmunicatin and widen the resurces that can be used. But we are nt ready t let g f paper yet. The children themselves still value their exercise bks and depend n them fr revisin."
    32. What can teachers d when everyne uses an iPad in schl?
    A. They can have deep cnversatins with students.
    B. They can have mre time t prepare the lessns.
    C. They can cmmunicate with their wrkmates mre cnveniently.
    D. They can learn mre abut students' activities at hme.
    33. What is an advantage f using iPads in the classrm?
    A. It makes sharing infrmatin easier.
    B. It reduces parents' wrry abut teaching.

    Dear Jim,
I' m srry t hear that yu didn't perfrm well in the cntest f "Telling Chinese Stries in English". Yu’re feeling dwn and yu find it s difficult t balance yur studies and the invlvement in the debate club that yu want t withdraw frm it. I understand yur struggles.
My advice is t reflect n yur perfrmance and allcate specific time slts fr debates and studies. Priritize tasks effectively and dn't hesitate t seek help frm teachers r peers if verwhelmed. Quitting might seem easy, but perseverance builds resilience. Keep practicing, and yu'll imprve. Remember that yur ptential is limitless. If yu need t talk r seek further guidance, I'm always here fr yu.
    Wishing yu strength and success.
