Schls ften have t walk a fine line when it cmes t parental cmplaints. Diverse backgrunds mean that schls can't please everyne all the time, s educatrs have t judge what's best fr the whle kids in their care.
Smetimes, what's best is hard t decide. Smetimes it's abslutely nt.
Such was the case when a parent at a St, Luis elementary schl cmplained in a Facebk grup abut a bk that was read t her 7-year-ld. The parent wrte:
“Anyne else check ut The Read a Lud Lk n Canvas fr 2nd grade tday? Rns Big Missin was the bk that was read ut lud t my 7-year-ld. I caught this after she watched it because I was wrking with my 3rd grader: I have called my daughter'$ schl. Parents, we have t preview what we are letting the kids see n there.”
The bk in questin, “Rns Big Missin,” highlights a true stry f Rn McNair, wh had experienced discriminatin as a child in Suth Carlina because he was Black. In 1959, 9-year-ldIMcNair wanted t check ut bks at the library, but the librarian tld him the library didn't lan bks t “clreds.” McNair refused t leave the library until he was allwed t check ut bks. Rather than give him a library card, the librarian called the plice, wh ultimately cnvinced her t just let him check ut bks.
Seriusly, what issue culd this parent pssibly take with such an inspiring stry f a kid wh std up t injustice, single-handedly changed a library's racial segregatin (隔离)plicy and grew up t be an astrnaut-a genuine, real-life her. If there's any ther pssible reasn than racism, I can't think f ne.
Hearing f the cmplaints, ther parents respnded immediately in the bk's defense. They called McNair a her and said, “He deserves t be celebrated, His stry deserves t be tld t ur children. And the schl respnded in the best pssible way. The next day, the principal read the bk t the whle students bdy via Zm.
24.What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
A. It's hard fr schls t satisfy every parent. B. Parents are always cmplaining abut parenting.
C. Parents f different backgrunds are hard t educate. D. It's hard fr educatrs t judge what's best fr the kids.
25.What was the parent's cmplaint abut the bk?
A. It was t advanced fr secnd graders. B. Its subject matter was ut f the curriculum.
C. It cntained imprper cntent fr yung children. D. It was nt previewed by parents befre being read t students.
26.Which f the fllwing can best describe Rn McNair?
A. Curageus and determined. B. Brave and ambitius. C. Mdest and heric. D. Sympathetic and respnsible.
27.What actin did the schl take in respnse t the cmplaint nline?

Damian Stefaniuk and his clleagues at Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MT) have develped a nvel energy strage device-a supercapacitr-using three basic, inexpensive materials water, cement, and a st (煤灰)-like substance called carbn black, a highly cnductive substance. Supercapacitrs are highly efficient at string energy but differ frm batteries in sme imprtant ways. They can charge much mre quickly than a lithium (锂) battery and dn't suffer frm the same levels f degradatin in perfrmance. But supercapacitrs als release the pwer they stre rapidly making them less useful in devices such as mbile phnes, laptps r electric cars where a steady supply f energy is needed ver an extended perid f time.
Yet accrding t Stefaniuk, carbn-cement supercapacitrs culd make an imprtant cntributin t effrts t decarbnise the glbal ecnmy. “f it can be scaled up, the technlgy can help slve an imprtant issue-the string f renewable energy," he says. He and his fellw researchers at MIT and Harvard University's Wyss institute fr Bilgically Inspired Engineering, envisin several applicatins fr their supercapacitrs. One might be t create rads that stre slar energy and then release it t recharge electric cars wirelessly as they drive alng a rad. The rapid release f energy frm the carbn-cement supercapacitr wuld allw vehicles t get a rapid bst t their batteries. Anther wuld be as energy string fundatins f huses-"t have walls, r fundatins, r clumns, that nt nly supprt the structure but als stre energy’,says Stefaniuk.
But it is still early days. Fr nw, the cncrete supercapacitr can stre a little under 300 watthurs per cubic metre-enugh t pwer a 10-watt LED lightbulb fr 30 hurs. The pwer “may seen lw cmpared t cnventinal batteries, but a fundatin with 30-40 cubic metres f cncrete culd be sufficient t meet the daily energy needs f a residential huse", says Stefaniuk. “Given the widespread use f cncrete glbally, this material has the ptential t be highly cmpetitive and useful in energy strage.”
28.What might be an advantage f supercapacitrs?
A. They require little care. B. They are lighter in design.
C. They discharge pwer in a stable manner. D. They cntinue t wrk effectively ver time.
29.Hw des the authr highlight the applicatin f supercapacitrs?
A. By giving instructins. B. By prviding examples. C. By making cmparisns. D. By presenting cause and effect.
30.What is the challenge faced by the widespread use f supercapacitrs?
A. They are nt cnductive enugh fr practical use. B. They stre less energy than cnventinal batteries
C. They are made frm materials that are difficult t btain. D. They require highly specialized manufacturing equipment.
31.What is the purpse f this text?
A. T present a prblem. B. T explain a prcess. C. T intrduce a slutin D. T advcate an actin
D
Can the path f a child's life-things like their future grade pint average (GPA)be predicted using cmputer mdels? In thery, this idea isn’t utlandish. In tday's digital wrld, algrithms (算法)can predict patient health utcmes and lan repayment likelihd. S researchers wndered whether this srt f analysis culd help predict a child’s future.
In a new study, Lundberg and his clleagues dug int why the earlier study failed t frecast the kids’ utcmes accurately-zering in n GPA. They recnnected with 40 families and interviewed them extensively t learn mre abut their lives, The findings suggest that the shrtcmings in predicting utcmes wasn't just abut a lack f data r cmputatinal limits. Rather, that there is a fundamental limit n ur ability t fretell the cmplexities f life.
This failure f predictin can be attributed t tw main surces. First is smething called irreducible errr, An example f this is an unexpected event that culd happen t a child in their adlescent years that can't be freseer smething like a parent's death, says Lundberg. “In that case, there’s really n machine learning r cmputatinal methds that can make predictin better.” he adds.
The secnd is learning errr: errrs within an algrithm’s learning prcess. The kinds f utcmes the scientists were trying t measure grades and family hardships are influenced by a lt f different variables, which can frm patterns that an algrithm can learn and then use t predict an utcme. But when there are t many variables, smetimes algrithms can learn the wrng pattern, says Lundberg. This type f learning errr can be made smaller with mre individuals. But fr lng-term studies like this, it's difficult t get mre than a few thusand peple t participate.
The new findings als highlight the value f qualitative (定性的) research-cnducting interviews and talking with human beings can yield insights that a quantitative apprach can't. Sme qualitative bservatins made by scilgists, such as hw peple interact and frm relatinships, are hard t translate int a number, says Studeh, and culd als be influencing utcmes. “The answer is n always mre data,” eches Studeh. “Scial utcmes, they're unpredictable and they're cmplex. And we just have t make peace with this unpredictability.”
32.What des the underlined wrd "'utlandish’, mean?
A. Strange. B. Practical. C. Nral. D. Familiar.
33. Why culdn’t the kids’ GPA be predicted accurately in the earlier study?
A. There's a basic limit t predicting life's cmplexities. B. There was insufficient participatin frm the families.
C. The cmputatinal mdels were nt pwerful enugh D. The study lacked enugh histrical data n GPA trends
34.What can we learn abut learning errr in paragraph 4?
A. It can be avided by increasing sample size.
B. It is an indicatr f hw well a mdel perfrms.
C. It is helpful fr training mdels and enhancing their perfrmance.
D. It is fundamentally caused by the existence f numerus variables.
35. What des Studeh suggest abut qualitative research?
A. It is nt as valuable as quantitative research. B. It relies n large amunt f data t predict utcmes.
C. It primarily addresses errrs in cmputatinal mdels D. It helps prvide perspectives that numbers alne might miss.

Uncver the best f and discver the stry f CharlesDarwin's1831and 1842turs f Wales.
With its wn plant life and distinctive, fssil-filled bulders (三石), Cwm Idwal helped t spark Darwin's understanding f rck mvements and deep time.
On the way, stp ff at a number f sites where Darwin was taught t “read the rcks and landscapes” by gelgist Adam Sedgewick.和第5 段 a research has uncvered plenty f evidence t suggest that he accmpanied Cambridge prfessr Adam Sedgwick t the island,可知,Adam Sedgewick在达尔文的科学生涯中起着重要的作用。

Diverse backgrunds mean that schls can't please everyne all the time,…
If there's any ther25.pssible reasn than racism, I can't think f ne.
And the schl respnded in the best pssible way. The next day, the principal read the bk t the whle students bdy via Zm.

Supercapacitrs are highly efficient at string energy but differ frm batteries in sme imprtant ways. They can charge much mre quickly than a lithium battery and dn’t suffer frm the same levels f degradatin in perfrmance.
Yet accrding t Stefaniuk, carbn-cement supercapacitrs culd make an imprtant cntributin t effrts t decarbnize the glbal ecnmy. “'If it can be scaled up, the technlgy can help slve an imprtant issue-the string f renewable energy,” he says. 文章最后一段“Given the widespread use f cncrete glbally, this material has the ptential t be highly cmpetitive and useful in energy strage.”

The findings suggest that the shrtcmings in predicting utcmes wasn’t just abut a lack f data r cmputatinal limits. Rather, that there is a fundamental limit n ur ability t fretell the cmplexities f life,研究结果表明,预测结果的不足不仅仅是由于缺乏数据或计算的局限性。
But when there are t many variables, smetimes algrithms can learn the wrng pattern, says Lundberg.
The new findings als highlight the value f qualitative research-cnducting interviews and talking with human beings can yield insights that a quantitative apprach can’t.
E. Time seems t pass mre quickly as we age, and fr gd reasn.
根据37空后面的信息 as yu age and encunter fewer new things, yur brain prcesses less, and time seems t speed up.
Immerse yurself in challenging activities.

其他选项如“n her back”(在她背上)或“against the wall”(靠在墙上)并不合适。
