Hw wuld yu like t wear the same underwear (内衣裤) fr weeks? Owing t the wrk that has gne int develping intelligent materials, this may nt be as 41 as it sunds. Self-cleaning clthes have nw been created, and these new materials prvide 42 resistance t dirt as well as water. As a result, they require much less cleaning than traditinal materials.
The creatin f self-cleaning clthes prvides an example f hw nature helps scientists develp better prducts. This self-cleaning nature is knwn as the “ltus effect”. The name cmes, f curse, frm the ltus leaves, which are famus fr grwing in muddy lakes and rivers while remaining almst 43
clean. By bserving nature, scientists are 44 the qualities f the ltus leaves t the materials they have engineered. Because f this, sme remarkable new prducts have been 45 . Amng them are special windws that are resistant t dirt and water. A special 46 n these windws nt nly prevents dirt frm sticking t their surfaces, but als allws dust t be easily washed ff by the rain. In fact, these new windws have already been 47 t sme cars. Even when traveling at high speed thrugh rain, these cars never have t use their windshield wipers (雨刮器).
Althugh we have already seen sme practical applicatins, even mre dramatic 48 will be made in the future, and they will, perhaps, change ur wrld cmpletely. Undubtedly, technlgy is an imprtant develpment, and it will have an even bigger 49 n ur lives.
III. Reading Cmprehensin
Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext.
Everyne in business has been tld that success is all abut attracting and retaining (留住) custmers. It sunds simple and achievable. But, 50 , wrds f wisdm are sn frgtten. Once cmpanies have attracted custmers they ften 51 the secnd half f the stry. In the excitement f beating ff the cmpetitin, negtiating prices, securing rders, and delivering the prduct, managers tend t becme carried away. They frget what they regard as the bring side f business— 52 that the custmer remains a custmer.
53 t cncentrate n retaining as well as attracting custmers csts business huge amunts f mney annually. It has been estimated that the average cmpany lses between 10 and 30 per cent f its custmers every years. In cnstantly changing 54 , this is nt surprising. What is surprising is the fact that few cmpanies have any idea hw many custmers they have lst.
Only nw are rganizatins beginning t wake up t thse lst pprtunities and calculate the 55
implicatins. Cutting dwn the number f custmers a cmpany lses can make a big 56 in its perfrmance. Research in the US fund that a five per cent decrease in the number f defecting (流失的) custmers led t 57 increases f between 25 and 85 per cent.
In the US, Dmin’s Pizza estimates that a regular custmer is wrth mre than $5,000 ver ten years. A custmer wh receives a pr quality prduct r service n their first visit and 58 never returns, is lsing the cmpany thusands f dllars in 59 prfits (mre if yu cnsider hw many peple they are likely t tell abut their bad experience).
The lgic behind cultivating custmer 60 is impssible t deny. “In practice mst cmpanies’ marketing effrt is fcused n getting custmers, with little attentin paid t 61 them”, says Adrian Payne f Crnfield University’ Schl f Management. “Research suggests that there is a clse relatinship between retaining custmers and making prfits. 62 custmers tend t buy mre, are predictable and usually cst less t service than new custmers. Furthermre, they tend t be less price 63 , and may prvide free wrd-f-muth advertising. Retaining custmers als makes it 64 fr cmpetitrs t enter a market r increase their share f a market.

A
The teacher wh did the mst t encurage me was, as it happened, my aunt. She was Myrtle C. Manigault, the wife f my mther’s brther Bill. She taught in secnd grade at all-black Summer Schl in Camden, New Jersey.
During my childhd and yuth, Aunt Myrtle encuraged me t develp every aspect f my ptential, withut regard fr what was cnsidered practical r pssible fr black females. I liked t sing; she listened t my vice and prnunced it gd. I culdn’t dance; she taught me the basic dancing steps. She tk me t the theatre nt just children’s theatre but adult cmedies and dramas—and her faith that I culd appreciate adult plays was nt disappinted.
My aunt als tk dwn bks frm her extensive library and shared them with me. I had bks at hme, but they were all serius classics. Even as a child I had a strng liking fr humr, and I’ll never frget the jy f discvering Dn Marquis’s Archy & Mehitabel thrugh her.
Mst imprtant, perhaps, Aunt Myrtle prvided my first pprtunity t write fr publicatin. A writer herself fr ne f the black newspapers, she suggested my name t the editr as a “yuth clumnist”. My clumn, begun when I was furteen, was suppsed t cver teenage scial activities—and it did—but it als gave me the freedm t write n many ther subjects as well as the habit f gathering material, the discipline f meeting deadlines, and, after graduatin frm cllege six years later, a slid cllectin f published material that carried my name and was my passprt t a series f writing jbs.
Tday Aunt Myrtle is still an enthusiastic supprter f her “favurite niece”. Like a diamnd, she has reflected a bright, multifaceted (多面的) image f pssibilities t every pupil wh has crssed her path.
Which f the fllwing did Aunt Myrtle d t the authr during her childhd and yuth?
A. She lent her sme serius classics. B. She cultivated her taste fr music.

Aunt Myrtle recmmended the authr t a newspaper editr mainly t ______.
A. develp her capabilities fr writing B. give her a chance t cllect material
C. invlve her in teenage scial activities D. ffer her a series f writing jbs
We can cnclude frm the passage that Aunt Myrtle was a teacher wh ______.
A. trained pupils t be diligent and well-disciplined
B. gave pupils cnfidence in expliting their ptential
C. emphasized what was practical r pssible fr pupils.
D. helped pupils vercme difficulties in learning

Human remains f ancient settlements will be reburied and lst t science under a law that threatens research int the histry f humans in Britain, a grup f leading archelgists (考古学家) says. In a letter addressed t the justice secretary, Ken Clarke, 40 archaelgists write f their “deep and widespread cncern” abut the issue. It centers n the law intrduced by the Ministry f Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales t be reburied within tw years, regardless f their age. The decisin means scientists have t little time t study bnes and ther human remains f natinal and cultural significance.
“Yur current requirement that all archaelgically unearthed human remains shuld be reburied, whether after a standard perid f tw years r a further special extensin, is cntrary t basic principles f archaelgical and scientific research and f museum practice,” they write.
The law applies t any pieces f bne uncvered at arund 400 dig sites, including the remains f 60 r s bdies fund at Stnehenge in 2008 that date back t 3,000 BC. Archaelgists have been granted a temprary extensin t give them mre time, but eventuallly the bnes will have t be returned t the grund.
The arrangements may result in the waste f future discveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Nrflk, where digging is cntinuing after the discvery f stne tls made by early humans 950,000 years ag. If human remains were fund at Happisburgh, they wuld be the ldest in nrthern Eurpe and the first indicatin f what this species was. Under the current practice f the law thse remains wuld have t be reburied and effectively destryed.
Befre 2008, guidelines allwed fr the prper preservatin and study f bnes f sufficient age and histrical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied t mre recent remains. The Ministry f Justice assured archaelgists tw years ag that the law was temprary, but has s far failed t revise it.
Mike Parker Pearsn, an archaelgist at Sheffield University, said: “Archaelgists have been extremely patient because we were led t believe the ministry was srting ut this prblem, but we feel that we cannt wait any lnger.”
The ministry has n guidelines n where r hw remains shuld be reburied, r n what recrds shuld be kept.
Accrding t the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because ______.
A. it is nly a temprary measure n the human remains
B. it is unreasnable and thus destructive t scientific research
C. it was intrduced by the gvernment withut their knwledge
D. it is vague abut where and hw t rebury human remains
Which f the fllwing statements is true accrding t the passage?
A. Temprary extensin f tw years will guarantee scientists enugh time.
B. Human remains f the ldest species were dug ut at Happisburgh.
C. Human remains will have t be reburied despite the extensin f time.
D. Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.
What can be inferred abut the British law gverning human remains?
A. The Ministry f Justice did nt intend it t prtect human remains.
B. The Burial Act 1857 nly applied t remains uncvered befre 1857.
C. The law n human remains hasn’t changed in recent decades.
D. The Ministry f Justice has nt dne enugh abut the law.
Which f the fllwing might be the best title f the passage?
A. New discveries shuld be reburied, the gvernment demands.
B. Research time shuld be extended, scientists require.
C. Law n human remains needs thrugh discussin, authrities say.
D. Law culd bury ancient secrets fr ever, archelgists warn.
Sectin C
Directins: Read the fllwing text and chse the mst suitable heading frm A-F fr each paragraph. There is ne extra heading which yu d nt need.
______
With the arrival f the age f “infrmatin ecnmy”, intellectual wrk is becming a mre imprtant surce f wealth than manufacturing. Organizatins in all walks f life are ding mre t spread their infrmatin. S peple f the Public Relatins are hired t speak fr them. A lt f ur news is actually cllected frm press releases and reprts f events intentinally staged fr jurnalists. In the infrmatin age, jurnalists spend their time, nt investigating, but passing n the wrds f a spkespersn.
______
There is a jke in the nvel Scp abut the newspaper’s wner, Lrd Cpper. The editrs can never disagree with him. When he’s right abut smething they answer “definitely”, and when he’s wrng they say “t sme extent, Lrd Cpper.” It seems reasnable t suppse that, in the real wrld, the pinins f such pwerful peple still influence the jurnalists and editrs wh wrk fr them.
______
In cuntries where the news is nt fficially cntrlled, it may be prvided by cmmercial rganizatins wh depend n advertising. The news has t attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that sme stries get air-time just because there happen t be exciting pictures t shw. In Britain, we have the tablid newspapers which millins f peple read simply fr entertainment. There is prgressively less rm fr histrical backgrund, r statistics, which are harder t present as a sensatinal stry.
______
There is an argument that with spreading access t the internet and cheap technlgy fr recrding sund and images we will all be able t find exactly the infrmatin we want. Peple arund the wrld will be able t publish their wn eye-witness accunts and cmpete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers n equal terms. But what it will mean als is that we’ll be subjected t a still greater amunt f nnsense and lies. Any web lg may cntain the latest infrmatin f the year, r equally, a made-up stry that yu will never be able t check.
______
Maybe the time has cme t d smething abut it, and I dn’t just mean changing yur chice f TV channel r newspaper. In a wrld where everyne wants yu t listen t their versin, yu nly have tw chices: switch ff altgether r start lking fr surces yu can trust. The investigative jurnalist f the future is everyne wh wants t knw the truth.
Sectin D
Directins: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questins r cmplete the statements in the fewest pssible wrds.
Scilgists have lng recgnised that rganisatins f less than 200 individuals can perate thrugh the free flw f infrmatin amng the members. Once their size ges beynd this figure, the rganizatins are getting less flexible. S it seems necessary t prevent ttal disrder resulting frm failures f cmmunicatin.
One slutin t this prblem wuld, f curse, be t structure large rganisatins int smaller units f a size that can act as a grup. By allwing these grups t build reliance n each ther, larger rganizatins can be built up. Hwever, merely having grups f, say, 150 will never f itself be a cmplete slutin t the prblems f the rganizatin. Smething else is needed: the peple invlved must be able t build direct persnal relatinships. T allw free flw f infrmatin, they have t be able t cmmunicate with each ther in a casual way. Maintaining t frmal a structure f relatinships inevitably prevents the way a system wrks.
The imprtance f this was drawn t my attentin tw years ag by the case f a TV statin. Whether by chance r by design, it s happened that there were almst exactly 150 peple in the statin. The whle prcess wrked very smthly as an rganizatin fr many years until they were mved int purpse-built accmmdatin. Then, fr n apparent reasn, the wrk seemed t be mre difficult t d, nt t say less satisfying.
It was sme time befre they wrk ut what the prblem was. It turn ut that, when the architects were designing the new building, they decided that the cffee rm where everyne ate their sandwiches at lunch times was an unnecessary luxury and s did away with it. And with that, they accidentally destryed the clse scial netwrks that strengthened the whle rganizatin. What had apparently been happening was that, as peple gathered infrmally ver their sandwiches in the cffee rm, useful infrmatin was casually being exchanged.
(Nte: Answer the questins r cmplete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.)
What size f an rganizatin may lead t cmmunicatin failures?
What are the tw slutins t the cmmunicatin prblem within a large rganizatin?
After the TV statin mved int new accmmdatin, its peratin ___________________________.
Frm the case f the TV statin, we can cnclude it is ____________________________________ that make(s) an rganizatin mre successful.

Humpback whales are smetimes called perfrmers f the cean. This is because they can make impressive mvements when they dive. The name “humpback”, which is the cmmn name fr this whale, refers t the typical curve shape the whale’s back frms as it dives.
Smetimes the humpback will dive with a fantastic mvement, knwn as a breach. During breaching the whale uses its pwerful tail flukes t lift nearly tw-thirds f its bdy ut f the water in a giant leap. A breach might als include a sideways twist with fins stretched ut like wings, as the whale reaches the height f the breach.
A humpback whale breathes air at the surface f the water thrugh tw blwhles which are lcated near the tp f the head. It blws a duble stream f water that can rise up t 4 meters abve the water.
The humpback has a small drsal fin lcated twards the tail flukes abut tw-thirds f the way dwn its back. Other distinguishing features include large pectral fins, which may be up t a third f the bdy length, and unique black and white spts n the underside f the tail flukes. These markings are like fingerprints: n tw are the same.
