Kenya has been at the frefrnt (前沿) f the glbal war n plastic since the gvernment banned single-use plastics in prtected areas in June 2020. Unfrtunately, the preventive measures have barely received attentin. Hundreds f tns f industrial and cnsumer plymer waste cntinue t get dumped int landfills daily. Hwever, if 29-year-ld Nzambi Matee has her way, the unsightly plastic heaps will sn be transfrmed int clrful bricks.
The materials engineer’s seeking t find a practical slutin t cntrl plastic pllutin began in 2017. She quit her jb and set up a small lab in her mther’s backyard. It tk her nine mnths t prduce the first brick and even lnger t cnvince a partner t help build the machinery t make them. But the determined ec-entrepreneur was cnfident in her idea and did nt give up.
She says, “I wanted t use my educatin t handle plastic waste pllutin. But I was very clear that the slutin had t be practical, sustainable, and affrdable. The best way t d this was by channeling the waste int the cnstructin space and finding the mst efficient and affrdable material t build hmes.” Her cmpany prduces ver 1,500 bricks a day. The pavers are made using a mix f plastic prducts that cannt be reprcessed r recycled.
The cllected plastic is mixed with sand, heated at very high temperatures, and cmpressed (压缩) int bricks that vary in clr and thickness. The resulting prduct is strnger, lighter, and abut 30 percent cheaper than cncrete bricks. Mre imprtantly, it helps repurpse the lwest quality f plastic. “There is that waste they cannt prcess anymre; they cannt recycle. That is what we get.” Matee says.
Matee is nt nearly dne. Her dream is t reduce the muntain f trash t just a hill by increasing prductin and expanding her fferings. She says, “The mre we recycle the plastic, the mre we prduce affrdable husing, the mre we created mre emplyment fr the yuth.”
    24. What des the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 imply?
    A. Clrful bricks are in huge demand.

Is it true that ur brain alne is respnsible fr human cgnitin (认知)? What abut ur bdy? Is it pssible fr thught and behavir t riginate frm smewhere ther than ur brain? Psychlgists wh study Embdied Cgnitin (EC) ask similar questins. The EC thery suggests ur bdy is als respnsible fr thinking r prblem-slving. Mre precisely, the mind shapes the bdy and the bdy shapes the mind in equal measure.
If yu think abut it fr a mment, it makes ttal sense. When yu smell smething gd r hear amusing sunds, certain emtins are awakened. Think abut hw newbrns use their senses t understand the wrld arund them. They dn’t have emtins s much as needs—they dn’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need fd. Even unbrn babies can feel their mthers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real wrld, they cry when they’re cld and then get hugged. That way, they start t assciate being warm with being lved.
Understandably, therists have been arguing fr years and still disagree n whether the brain is the nerve center that perates the rest f the bdy. Older Western philsphers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC therizes that the brain and bdy are wrking tgether as an rganic supercmputer, prcessing everything and frming yur reactins.
Further studies have backed up the mind-bdy interactin. In ne experiment, test subjects (实验对象) were asked t judge peple after being handed a ht r a cld drink. They all made warm evaluatins when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than clness. And it wrks the ther way t; in anther study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in r “rejected” frm a grup task. Thse wh were included felt physically warmer.
Fr further prf, we can lk at the metaphrs (比喻说法) that we use withut even thinking. A kind and sympathetic persn is frequently referred t as ne with a sft heart and smene wh is very strng and calm in difficult situatins is ften described as slid as a rck. And this kind f metaphrical use is cmmn acrss languages.
Nw that yu have the knwledge f mind-bdy interactin, why nt use it? If yu’re having a bad day, a warm cup f tea will give yu a flash f pleasure. If yu knw yu’re physically cld, warm up befre making any interpersnal decisins.
    28. Accrding t the authr, the significance f the EC thery lies in ________.
    A. facilitating ur understanding f the rigin f psychlgy

    29. Where des the new brns’ understanding f their surrundings start frm?

    C. Their physical feelings.D. Their inner emtins.

    A. envirnment impacts hw we judge thers
    B. the mind and the bdy influence each ther
    C. hw bdy temperature is related t health
    D. hw humans interact with their surrundings
    31. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the last paragraph?
    A. T share with the reader ways t release their emtins.
    B. T guide the reader nt the path t career success.
    C. T encurage the reader t put EC int practice.
    D. T deepen the reader’s understanding f EC.

This phrase is knwn as the “Exchange Principle” and frms ne f the basic principles f frensic science (法医学), which was ppularized by Edmund Lcard, ne f the pineers in the field f frensics, wh shwed that every time tw bjects came in cntact with each ther, there was an exchange f material between them.
Crime Scene Investigatrs (CSIs) lk fr three different types f fingerprints: Patent (明显纹), Plastic (成型纹) and Latent (潜伏指纹). The hunt fr lifting latent fingerprints is the mst challenging. Since these are invisible r barely visible, CSIs must use chemistry t enhance such prints, if any exists. CSIs use their trusty brush and fingerprint pwders t visualize prints frm bth smth and textured surfaces.
Scientists have develped a methd that can visualize prints frm even the faintest fingerprints left after the metal f a gun is wiped ff. This technique uses a clred-electr active film that uses invisible fingerprints t blck the electric current. Besides, scientists can nw identify wh handled the bullet befre it fired by visualizing crrsin (腐蚀) n it.
There have been many extrardinary advances in frensic technlgy, s unfrtunately, the days f wiping dwn weapns t remve fingerprints will sn be a myth frm a past era.
    32. What’s the cmmn misunderstanding f fingerprints?
    A. Fingerprints are unique and stay with us all ur life.
    B. If peple wipe their fingerprints ff surfaces, they can’t be identified.
    C. The days f wiping dwn weapns t remve fingerprints are gne.
    D. Wiping a surface can’t guarantee fingerprints can be remved.
    33. What’s the functin f Paragraph 2?
    A. T give examples.B. T give evidence.
    C. T present the tpic.D. T make cmparisns.
    34. Accrding t Paragraph 3, “Exchange Principle” wrks by ________.
    A. giving and receiving material
    B. identifying types f fingerprints
    C. depending n different surfaces
    D. leaving fingerprints with dirty fingertips

Denny held my hand, but then my turn came. I knelt dwn and pinted at the pian n the stage, “Mm will be there fr a while. Yu stay here.” Denny ndded as if t cheer me n. I pressed his little hand sftly and let it g. In the sptlight, I stepped n stage and sat in frnt f the pian. Gently placing my fingers n the keys, I fell int a pure and slemn air—I had always dreamed f this and here it was. Frtunately, it turned ut that the evening practices paid ff. My fingers danced smthly n the pian, which made me mre relaxed than ever. But I suddenly heard a familiar vice nt clearly. Then I fund my little Denny swinging alng with me in the first raw. I smiled at him but he decded that in a wrng way. The next secnd, I saw him slide dwn frm the seat and run twards me.
A small bdy climbed nt the pian bench next t me. Here came his plinks. There was a pause fr a mment, but I didn’t want t stp. S, in the curius eyes f my audience, I kept playing the very sng that I have practiced at hme thusands f times in the cmpany f Denny and his plinks. Strangely, Denny’s plinks and mine seemed t reach a sweet spt, making the sng unexpectedly wnderful. When the music stpped, the last nte lingered n the hall. Amidst great applause, I hugged my sn tightly. I knew it was time t bw t everyne. After that I wuld tell them that this was a sng f my life, harmniusly beautiful thugh mixed with my child’s plinks. And this was als a sng by my life, with that musty pian that had a great tne. Finally, a sng fr my life, was amazingly blming thugh in the face f life’s strm.
