language, t the realizatin f what the tile actually means: that underneath the surface f histry, there is light that has nt been seen, and stries that
have gne untld.
I’m ging t be hnest-lve fr this bk didn’t hit me straight away. In fact, my first attempt t read it last mnth ended with me putting it aside
and ging t find smething easier, lighter and less descriptive t read. But this bk is built n beautiful imagery. Bth in the literal sense-the physical
wrld f 1940s Paris and Germany, and the metaphrical (隐喻性的)sense-scientific and philsphical references t light, t seeing and nt seeing, and
the differences between the tw. It’s a beautiful wrk f genius, but it des get a little cmplicated at times.
Hwever, when we get int the meat f this Wrld War II nvel, it’s als an upsetting stry f a childhd trn apart by war. It’s abut Parisian
Marie Laure wh has been blind since she was six, and a German rphan called Werner wh finds himself at the center f the Hitler Yuth. Bth f their
stries are tld with sensitivity and sympathy, each ne frced dwn a path by their persnal circumstances and by that destructive mnster-war.
I think this is the kind f bk yu will never appreciate if yu stp t sn-I learned that lessn. Frm the first t last page, there is a theme f
invisible lines running parallel (平行的)t ne anther and smetimes, just smetimes, crssing in the strangest way. These tw lives we are intrduced t
seem t be wrlds apart, and yet they cme tgether and influence ne anther. It was this, mre than the predictably awful tale f war, that made me
feel quite emtinal.

3.Did yu knw that the custm f turning ur clcks an hur ahead during the year first riginated in Wrld War I? By making the days “lnger” ,
the gal was fr husehlds t cnserve electricity and ther frms f energy like fuel. Recently, the US Senate passed the Sunshine Prtectin Act. The
bill must als g thrugh the Huse f Representatives befre it can be signed by the President. If passed, Daylight SavingTime(DST) culd becme the
permanent system f the time.
Althugh the specific dates f the time change differ, many cuntries arund the wrld bserve a biannual system f the time. Frm mid-March t
Nvember in the US, mst states practice DST by turning the time frward by an hur frm the Standard Time(ST), the lcal time bserved in an area.
Thugh the riginal purpse f DST was t encurage the cnservatin f energy, multiple studies suggest that the time shift has nt made a
significant impact n saving energy csts. While less mney is spent n electricity, csts are still likely t rise with the usage f devices such as air
cnditiners and cmputers. Research cnducted by the American Academy f Sleep Medicine has shwn that DST time changes lead t a greater risk f
car crashes.
Accrding t researchers, ST is much mre clsely related t the bdy’s circadian rhythm(昼夜节律) which regulates ur rgans as well as ur sleep-
wake cycle. By permanently living in DST, children wuld have t get up and be in schl lng befre the sun rises—which culd be 9 am in Seattle and
ther western states!
Prpnents argue that because DST maximizes daylight, it encurages safety by lwering crime rates and reducing seasnal depressin. DST
prvides mre waking time t enjy with families and friends, r even t get mre wrk dne.

4.At its annual general assembly in Vienna last mnth, the Eurpean Gesciences Unin (EGU) did smething unusual. The chair f its awards
cmmittee, Thmas Blunier, presented a breakdwn, by gender, f prize nminees (被提名者) and nminatrs (提名者) since 2014. The data were
revealing. Althugh wmen make up 37% f the sciety’s members, they made just 20% f nminatins suggesting that wmen are less likely t
nminate than men. The data als shwed that peple tend t favur their wn gender when making nminatins-with men mst likely t nminate
ther men.
This is clearly a prblem, but awareness f the situatin pens the dr t fixing it. Althugh wmen are still under-represented in EGU nminatins,
their share f awards is nw appraching their representatin amng EGU members, thanks t crrective measures taken by the rganizatin? s awards
cmmittee. The EGU is distinct frm mst ther scientific scieties that d nt make nminatin data public, thugh it is necessary fr the fairness
amng prizewinners.
Sme ther effrts are under way t make prizes fairer. In mathematics, fr example, the Internatinal Mathematical Unin has intrduced guidelines
t make nminatrs and award-cmmittee members aware f uncnscius bias. Many prize nminatin frms nw include statements encuraging
nminatrs t cnsider diversity. The cmmittees that award Nbel prizes have tld Nature that they are attempting t increase diversity in nminees
and that the prprtin f wmen nminated is rising.
Prize-givers need t widen their nminatin pls. In 2019, Nature suggested that award rganizers might cast their nets wider when seeking
nminatins by appraching netwrks that include academies f science in lw and middle-incme cuntries. This is still nt happening n the scale
that it needs t.
Sadly, these measures will nt make science prizes match glbal diversity, at least nt straight away. Many prizes are based n wrk carried ut
decades ag, when the barriers t entering science were even higher than they are tday fr peple frm under-represented grups and cuntries. At
the very least, prfessinal scieties must ensure that their nminatin pls are representatives f their cmmunities. Greater transparency and a wider,
mre diverse pl f nminees increase the chance f awards rewarding excellence, rather than enlarging existing netwrks f fame.

【小题3】What des the authr hld in the last paragraph?

D.The Way t Gender Diversity: Difficult, Delicate but Destined
