On Mnday, the American Academy f Pediatrics issued a statement calling n schl districts t mve start times t 08:30 r later fr middle and high schls, s that students can get at least 8.5 hurs f sleep a night. It ntes that making middle and high schlers start classes befre 08:30 threatens their health, safety and academic perfrmance.
"It's a very pwerful statement abut the imprtance f sleep. But it's hrrifically challenging t mve the start schedules up and back." Dr. Judith Owens tells NPR. "Letting teenagers sleep later sets ff a series f adjustments. Teachers have t change their schedules, and lder children wh sit yunger nes might n lnger get hme first."
But this is ne area where the evidence is unequivcal, the statement stresses. As children becme teenagers, their sleep-wake cycle shifts tw hurs later. S it's difficult, if nt impssible, fr them t g t sleep befre 22:30. As a result, the Academy has fund that 59% f middle schlers and 87% f high schlers are getting less than the recmmended 8.5 t 9.5 hurs f sleep a night.
"There's a price t pay fr that," the statement warns. "Studies have fund that lack f sleep in teenagers increases the risk f traffic accidents, and makes them easier t get depressed and verweight. Instead, teens wh get mre sleep d better academically, with better standardized test scres and better quality f life."
Drinking cffee t get thrugh the day r sleeping mre n weekends desn't make up fr the sleep shrtage, the statement ntes. "It's nt simply abut getting teenagers t g t bed early r remving electrnics frm the bedrm. Thse are imprtant things, but the bilgy plays a mre decisive rle."
As smene wh has t wake up a sleepy-eyed middle schler at 06:20 every mrning, I'm praying that ur schl district will adpt a later start time. I knw that science desn't necessarily determine plicy. But hw abut a nice increase in standardized test scres?
28. What des Dr. Judith Owens stress?
A . The incnvenience fr sme families. B . The prblems caused by lack f sleep. C . The difficulties f changing start times. D . The imprtance f getting enugh sleep.
29. What is the mst imprtant factr in determining teenagers' sleep time?
A . The diet. B . The bilgy. C . The sleep habit. D . The envirnment.
30. What des the authr imply in the last paragraph?
A . Later start times are als gd fr schls. B . Authrities shuld base their plicy n science. C . Children are usually tired n Mnday mrnings. D . Schls shuld put students' interest in the first place.
31. What is the best title fr the text?
A . Wrries abut Teenagers' Health B . Strng Oppsitins t an Old Schl Plicy C . A Review n the Current Schl Start Times D . A Pwerful Call fr Later Schl Start Times
