The majrity f Beijing’s hutngs were built between the 13th and 19th centuries during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. T help them keep cntrl ver the city, the Emperrs during these perids arranged different areas f Beijing in neat blcks f huses built arund curtyards. They were then able t place guards at the entrances f the varius hutngs, which made it easier t keep an eye n peple’s mvements. The Emperr’s hme, the Frbbiden City, was in the center f Beijing and the hmes f the nbles and wealthy citizens were in the hutngs clsest t the ryal palace. Ordinary citizens lived in the hutngs further away frm the palace.
