Every year thusands f turists flck t China. They cme t see the grand sights f the Great Wall and the Frbidden City, but ften it is the hutngs that leave the strngest impressin, as they ffer travellers a rare view int Beijing’s past. Hutngs—the many little alleys that cnnect the rectangular curtyards f traditinal huses—are a feature f ancient Chinese architecture. Beijing’s hutngs are particularly famus, hwever, as there are thusands f them. Nwadays, the wrd “hutng” has cme t mean mre than just the alleys that cnnect the curtyards. It als refers t the curtyards themselves and even t the cmmunities that live there.
The majrity f Beijing’s hutngs were built between the 13th and 19th centuries during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. T help them keep cntrl ver the city, the Emperrs during these perids arranged different areas f Beijing in neat blcks f huses built arund curtyards. They were then able t place guards at the entrances f the varius hutngs, which made it easier t keep an eye n peple’s mvements. The Emperr’s hme, the Frbbiden City, was in the center f Beijing and the hmes f the nbles and wealthy citizens were in the hutngs clsest t the ryal palace. Ordinary citizens lived in the hutngs further away frm the palace.
By cnnecting peple’s hmes, the hutngs in fact cnnected peple’s lives, whether the lives f the rich r the lives f the rdinary citizens. Because the huses were built facing each ther arund curtyards, the families wh lived there were an imprtant part f each ther’s lives. They supprted each ther when help was needed and shared the jy and srrw f everyday life, n dubt sharing recipes, brrwing mps, and burning fragrant incense tgether when they pay respect t the ancestrs r Buddhists. Because f the hutngs, curtyards were jined tgether fr miles arund creating a netwrk f peple wrking, playing and living tgether—a real cmmunity.

B.T ffer the travelers a rare view.
C.T strengthen the emperr’s ruling ver the cuntry.
D.T deepen the cnnectin between peple in the cmmunities.
    30.Hw were hutngs arranged?
A.They were arranged accrding t ranks f the classes.
B.They were arranged accrding t peple’s life demands.
C.They were arranged accrding t city’s gegraphic features.
D They were arranged accrding t the clseness amng peple.
31.What is the authr’s intentin t write the text?
A.T persuade peple t travel in Beijing.B.T intrduce a traditinal architecture.
C.T encurage peple t live in hutngs.D.T explain the feature f hutngs.

Cmmn water plant culd prvide a green energy surce. Scientists have figured ut hw t get large amunts f il frm duckweed, ne f nature’s fastest-grwing water plants. Transferring such plant il int bidiesel (生物柴油) fr transprtatin and heating culd be a big part f a mre sustainable future.
Fr a new study, researcher genetically engineered duckweed plants t prduce seven times mre il per acre than sybeans. Jhn Shanklin, a bichemist says further research culd duble the engineered duckweed’s il utput in the next few years.
Unlike fssil fuels, which frm undergrund, bifuels can be refreshed faster than they are used. Fuels made frm new and used vegetable ils, animal fat and seaweed can have a lwer carbn ftprint than fssil fuels d, but there has been a recent negative view against them. This is partly because s many crps nw g int energy prductin rather than fd and bifuels take up mre than 100 millin acres f the wrld’s agricultural land.
Duckweed, cmmn n every cntinent but Antarctica, is amng the wrld’s mst prductive plants and the researchers suggest it culd be a game-changing renewable energy surce fr three key reasns. First, it grws readily in water, s it wuldn’t cmpete with fd crps fr agricultural land. Secnd, duckweed can grw fast in agricultural pllutin released int the water. Third, Shanklin and his team fund a way t avid a majr bitechnlgical barrier. Fr the new study, Shanklin says, the researchers added an il-prducing gene, “turning it n like a light switch” by intrducing a particular mlecule (分子) nly when the plant had finished grwing.
T expand prductin t industrial levels, scientists will need t design and prduce large-scale bases fr grwing engineered plants and btaining il a challenge. Shanklin says, because duckweed is a nn-mainstream crp withut much existing infrastructure (基础设施).
32.What can peple get frm duckweed firsthand?
    A.Plant ilB.Stable bidieselC.Sustainable water.D.Natural heat.
33.What des paragraph 4 mainly cnvey?
A.Optins fr renewable energy.B.Reasns fr engineering genes.

    A.Industrial levels.B.Unique design.C.Academic research.D.Basic facilities.
35.What wuld be the best title fr the text?
