Ray Tkuda, a 54-year-ld Japanese American, is prud f the title his schl has given him. He is a Shifu, a Chinese wrd literally meaning a master, mentr r senir practitiner f martial arts.
Tkuda has reasn t be prud. He has been invlved with Chinese martial arts fr almst fur decades. After learning them at the martial arts schl in New Mexic State, tday he is amng the mst experienced kung fu teachers in the schl.
Practicing martial arts tw t three hurs and helping students imprve their skills have becme Tkuda's daily rutine. He expects t practice and teach martial arts fr the rest f his life. “I'm still learning. It's wrth mre than a lifetime t learn Chinese martial arts,” he said. “Once I started, I just culdn't stp. I think it's als the magic f Chinese culture.”
Tkuda was sent t the martial arts schl when he was 10. He still remembers hw unwilling he was when starting ut. “My father had always wanted t learn Chinese martial arts but never gt the chance, s he put his kid in,” he said. “I was s afraid at that time because I thught kung fu was all abut fighting.”
But things changed after he learned that martial arts were mre than punching(拳打) and kicking(猛踹).
“One f the things martial arts teach me is vercming adversity,” Tkuda said. “As a little kid, my first lessn was like, h, lk, this is a thing that I can get thrugh by diligence, perseverance(毅力) and dedicatin(奉献), and that was priceless fr my life.”
Learning Chinese martial arts pened a gateway fr him t better understand Chinese culture because he culd hear a lt f ancient Chinese kung fu-related stries. “It is like in America, where we hear stries abut knights in shining armr(盔甲) and King Arthur and nble deeds dne,” he said. “I feel martial arts preserve smething f ancient China that can't be fund in bks. My First Marathn (马拉松)
A mnth befre my first marathn, ne f my ankles was injured and this meant nt running fr tw weeks, leaving me nly tw weeks t train. Yet, I was determined t g ahead.
I remember back t my 7th year in schl. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us t run laps and then hit a sftball. I didn't d either well. He later infrmed me that I was “nt athletic”.
The idea that I was “nt athletic” stuck(粘贴) with me fr years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, nt abut cmpetitin r whether r nt I was athletic. It was all abut the battle against my wn bdy and mind. A test f wills!
The night befre my marathn, I dreamt that I culdn't even find the finish line. I wke up sweating and nervus, but ready t prve smething t myself.
Shrtly after crssing the start line, my she laces(鞋带) became untied. S I stpped t readjust. Nt the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became ut f breath and the nce injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the curse walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
