My brther and I were like mst peple, I imagine, wh find themselves trying t d the right things fr a parent suffering frm the symptms f dementia (痴呆). Thugh there was useful advice available frm varius nline surces, nthing prepared us fr the reality r the effects the symptms had upn Mum's lving, kind, caring nature.
The greatest shck fr me was seeing Mum being vilent and aggressive with a carer. At times the aggressin was directed at me t and I never really knew what t expect as Mum culd g frm being a lving Mther t this vilent stranger in a flash. It was as thugh Mum had been pssessed at times and all I culd d was t cnstantly attempt t distract her frm her fears at any mment.
One f the many challenging aspects f the dementia symptms is that the sufferer ften desn't knw that they're ill. In Mum's case, the main thing was t carry n as thugh everything was just as it always was. Many were the nights where she'd be cnvinced that friends and relatives were cming rund fr a party and she'd rush arund setting the table, preparing snacks and getting everything ready until she was exhausted. I gt t see first hand just hw the anxieties that came with the illness wuld really stay with her until she fell asleep.

When leaving schl, I was pleased that my exam results meant that I culd study engineering at university. But I als wanted t travel befre starting my curse. A friend f mine tld me abut the Schls Explring Sciety, an rganizatin which helps students take a gap year (a year between leaving schl and ging t cllege).
