    “It’s a really big prblem,” says Ellit’s mm, Alyssa. She was shcked when she discvered Ellit had bypassed parental cntrls and was
    spending five hurs a day n scial media. “I asked him, ‘Can yu just take a lk and see? Just tell me what yu think. Des this feel gd t
    yu?’” she says.
    Ellit hadn’t realized hw many hurs he was n scial media. And he was at a lss. With his mther’s help, he tried t start cutting back. After
    several mnths, he decided t delete (删除) scial media apps altgether. “After that, I actually sleep enugh and feel better,” he says. He’s nw clser
    with his friends because they spend mre time talking instead f scrlling. And jining schl clubs has als helped him reduce time n his phne.

    A pssible treatment fr Flrida’s disastrus red tides (赤潮) tk anther step tward widespread use after successful testing in Sarasta Bay.
    This study, led by UCF Assistant Prfessr f Bilgy Kristy Lewis, is the first successful test f any red tide treatment technlgy in pen water using
    large water cntainers (容器). These cntainers—abut six feet in diameter—extend frm the waters’ surface t the cean flr, allwing scientists t
    test real cean cnditins within a cntrlled setting. Fur cntainers were treated with a clay (黏土) slutin, while the ther fur served as a cntrl.
    The clay alng with the Karenia brevis algae (海藻), which is respnsible fr Flrida red tide, is put n the cean flr. Lewis has spent the last three
    years carefully testing the impact f intrducing this clay int the cean ecsystem. She nt nly lks fr changes in the water’s quality, but als wants
    t knw hw the clay affects the health f sea life. “We want t make sure the treatment is nt wrse than the disease,” she says.
    At first, the test was simply t measure the influence f the clay n the ecsystem, but an unexpected red tide event caused Lewis t make the test
    practical. The results suggest the clay perfrmed as expected, but there’s still a questin f whether the bad effects f algae remain active n the cean
    flr. Water cllected during the test shuld prvide an answer. Next steps depend n the test results, but there are already plans t survey what
    happened t the clay-cated algae when it’s used near seagrass beds.
    Visiting Sarasta. Flrida, in the middle f a red tide event reminded Lewis just hw imprtant the research is t keep the state’s cast healthy.
    Lewis says she’s prepared t g anther three years if that’s what it takes t find an acceptable slutin t red tides.

    Recently a reprt was made public by NatureServe, a Virginia-based envirnmental grup, which said 40 percent f animals and 34 percent f plants
    in the United States are at risk f disappearing.
    The grup examined data frm ver 1,000 scientists in the United States and Canada, using 50 years f infrmatin n the health f animals, plants
    and ecsystems. The reprt prvided pictures and maps f areas that are unprtected and where animals and plants are mst threatened.
    Sean O’Brien, president f NatureServe, said what the reprt shwed was dreadful. Fr example, amng the species (物种) at risk f extinctin is the
    Venus flytrap, a plant that “eats” insects. The reprt said it is nly fund in the wild in a few places in the states f Nrth and Suth Carlina. The
    reprt als said 200 species f trees might die ut and that America’s large nrthern grasslands are amng the ecsystems mst threatened. The main
    threats t plants, animals and ecsystems include envirnmental destructin (破坏), land-use change, river pllutin, and climate change, accrding t
    the reprt.
    Califrnia, Texas and the sutheastern United States are where the highest percentages f plants, animals and ecsystems are at risk. Thse areas
    have many different frms £ life. Wesley Knapp, head plant scientist at NatureServe, said thse parts f America haven’t seen much ppulatin grwth
    in recent years. Knapp said lawmakers usually d nt prvide as much mney fr prtecting plants as they d fr animals. He hped the data culd
    guide state and area fficials in creating effective State Wildlife Actin Plan (SWAP) t prtect endangered species.
    Nw $50 millin natinwide is shared amng all states t carry ut their SWAP. If the Recvering America’s Wildlife Act was passed, it wuld
    increase that amunt t $ 1.4 billin. Knapp said the bill wuld have better served the prtectin f plants and animals.
